Focus (II) (2015)

Weak, disconnected screenplay
7 February 2024
The movie starts with a very promising intro. Smoothly operating thieves with strong manipulation skills, mysterious backgrounds of protagonists (Will Smith's character) etc. It is as if in the middle of the film, they fired the screenwriter and without even hiring a new one just try to imagine what he/she might have written. The story just jumps from one phase to another without properly preparing the spectators. From "3 years later" part on, it felt like the storyline just abruptly began to be wrapped up. But to me the tipping point was to hear the same exact dialogue lines for about 9 times in a row, I mean really? Can you imagine 9 different people reacting to a very generic goodbye line in the exact same way? Of course I'm not obsessed with realism but does anyone else think that this repetition I did even a 0.0001 value to the story?

Acting masterpiece
17 April 2020
When it's Almodovar, there is few chance that a movie can go wrong. This title is for sure no exception. If you're up to see a movie with an unpredictable scenario with a jaw dropping acting, don't hesitate for a second and go for it.

What a masterpiece! Definitely a must-see for all.
17 April 2020
The movie has everything that you'd look for in a masterpiece; a great director, an outstanding script, endless tunes... but maybe above all a state-of-the-art acting by Al Pacino. Not only is the tango scene mind-blowing, but also is the way acting maintained throughout the movie with an incredible consistency. An acting to be thought and maybe repeated (or should we say, imitated?) at drama schools for eternity. P.S.: I'm still trying to decide if I'll give it a 10 or 9. For now I'm sticking with 9 to possibily elevate it to 10 when I see the movie again at a later age. There were just a thing or two that I couldn't fully grasp with the Lt Colonel, which I think I will in time.

Don't worry if you didn't like the movie
23 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a person who believes that this sequel isn't as good as the first movie, I observe that most people who didn't like it were reluctant to express their views openly as some people praised this film (often to the detriment of the first). Don't be! And here is why.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who believes that this whole trilogy contains a lot of typical boring Hollywood contents such as dull jokes, a very easily predictible plot and a mixture of races like an Olympics game, just to catch all type of audience. However, what made the first movie worth seeing for me were its quite strong cinematography, sophisticated use of guns (oh, who could forget that unnecessary but equally satisfactory use of front gun on the aircraft by Statham!) and funny surprise elements, such as jokes on Arnie's governorship. In this movie, the latter is only added by two scenes of Uncle Chuckie and other than that, everything about the scenario is as much predictible and typical as it could be. In fact, it goes as far as all the good guys getting away in one piece from any kind of danger! I mean, even the cyborgs in Terminator injured and suffered more. The fact that JCVD's fighting skills are just limited to one long kick was another disappointment about this sequel.

Then, why so many people liked it? In two words: Chuck Norris. Seeing the old man in an action movie with his fellas is just what an average American 80s action movie enthusiast would need to adore this piece. So basically, if you're not fan of such a nostalgia, then it's ABSOLUTELY normal that you didn't rate this movie any more than 6 or the first one.

A useful tip: First, try out the game "Wolfenstein 2"
15 February 2019
As most said below, the movie has some unrealistic features and a lot of bloody graphic content. It also has a lot of scenes and stories "inspired"/ripped off from games, second part being mainly from Wolfenstein 2. So there you go: if you like the game -or just if you enjoy game's videos after seeing them- and want more of it, you're gonna be happy with the time you spent on this movie. If not, then skip to something else or be ready to get bored like my gf did!

Excellent historical, geographic and contextual connections. Very good acting by talented new generation Turkish actors. Fluent scenario. Definitely worth giving a try!

Rocky Balboa (2006)

May upset you after watching the entire series!
15 October 2018
After reading all the comments giving 10 out of 10 I started thinking whether I was the only one who actually liked Rocky series but not this one. Maybe this wouldn't be the case if I haven't seen this film right after watching the 5 precedents. However this is how it went on and I can definitely say that this movie lacked a lot that the five preceding, let alone the fabulous first two, films had.

I think its most crushing lack was Rocky's cause or motivation for the fight. Please don't tell me "'cuz Fighters gotta fight". No, they don't, particularly after their 50s and against a world champ at his 20s!! In all those first five movies, there was such a cause, such a logic behind those fights that would make you get into the movie and fight in Rocky's place if he ignored the challenges. This is apparently not the case in this one. I am sorry, but no, I couldn't feel it.

Another setback is references to previous movies. I was expecting more hitting, provocative and somewhat modernised references to past movies. To begin with, the training scene had nothing original! I was going for a run and even about to sign up for a gym each time I saw any of first four movies - RB can only be compared to the fifth one in these terms. As with the music, I would expect some changes to the original tunes which would make you feel like you're listening to a 2000s version of, for example, "Gonna fly now". Listening to the same song over and over again after years passed would simply mean that you couldn't add anything new on what you wonderfully did years ago.

Finally, the opponent. In most 21st century movies, when an actor is not artistically talented, he is at least expected to be handsome/beautiful or have a good body, as a consolation. This guy however lacked both criteria. In terms of script; he doesn't have a real story behind or an interesting connection to Rocky (please don't tell me that you bought that a world champion would ever accept to fight a senior legend just because he lost to his shape from decades ago in a video simulation).

All in all, if you want to drop your Rocky addiction for a while (until you start again in a year or so), I would definitely recommend seeing this movie. But if you want to stay in the loop, just keep watching the first two or four or even five of the series and skip RB.

Very nice - to help you fall asleep
31 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The focus on the daily life in a PoW camp full of Anglo-American prisoners from Shanghai is indeed a distinct aspect of the movie. Another positive part of the movie was of course the acting laid out by young Bale and Malcovich.

Whereas a good narrative would be enough to make this one a must-see World War II classic, after a while I felt like the narrative slowed down and started to focus on so many unnecessary details that I wished the end of the movie to come anytime soon after the first 90 minutes - and I'm pretty sure that I am on top 10% of the most patient people who have seen this piece. Indeed after a point I started to give the movie a second, a third, a fourth and so on chances but it never took any of them.

In a nutshell, a type of movie when you stay up late in front of the TV and run into while swapping channels, see talented actors in the cast and decide to give it a shot, then fall asleep while you watch it and don't care about the rest of it when you wake up.
