Leave the World Behind (2023)
A movie without the ending
Movie starts off pretty well. You can clearly see the different personalities and characters really seemed to make rational decisions which very often is not the case with movies like this.
However, at one point, the movie seemed to just introduce a bunch of "mystery boxes" and throw them at us. At one point, I really figured out what the ending is going to be - Nothing. I could see that they have presented too much open questions and that they'll probably just end the movie and try to play the "ambiguous smart ending" card. It was cheap and it was frustrating.
Not only did the movie just end without any resolution to anything, but there are so many plot threads that they seemed to just abandon. It's like the movie was re-edited by the studio and the end product has nothing to do with what the initial idea was.
What's with the Spanish-speaking woman on the road? No idea.
What's the thing with deer? No idea.
G. H. Was caught lying about when exactly he heard about all the chaos. Why exactly didn't he have his ID? I guess they forgot about it, because that is never mentioned again.
Now, it turns out that there is this crazy guy who is all about preparing for the apocalypse and what not. That guy knows that there is a huge bunker with a huge stock in the neighborhood, but he doesn't go there??? Why? He'll rather stay in his house? Makes zero sense.
Wow, by writing this review I got so annoyed that I decreased the rating by 2 additional points. What a dumb movie...
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
A huge disappointment
Wow, where to start with this one...
The story follows absurdly cartoonish rich and powerful guy (and his sister). He confesses to his corrupt deeds, by telling the story of how his family fell apart (including multiple deaths). Intro is quite captivating and you really want to hear more of what he has to say... until you realize that none of that is interesting.
There are 6 characters (rich guy's kids) that are focus of each episode from 2-7. That is a bit reminiscent of Hill house, where there were 4 kids, with one huge difference: All of them are boring, shallow and poorly written. There's nothing you want to learn about them. They are your typical cliché rich stereotypes: Young guy that's always drugged, a bit older guy that's always drugged, very successful and arrogant strong female character (Kate Siegel hot as always), science genius character, one that's always pissed, and an incompetent white father character. They do tick all of the diversity boxes, though. By the 4th episode you get what the pattern is and you just wait for the final episode, hoping for some revelation.
Now, rich guy's sister (aunt of the 6 boring kids) is a very nice example on how modern screenwriters think awesome female characters are supposed to be written. She is ultra-smart and rootless. Ok, cool, what else is there to know about her? What are her goals in life? How did her mother's death affect her? None of that is explored. She is here to smash the patriarchy. You can have ultra-smart woman that has a hard time climbing the corporate ladder, especially in the 80's. You can explore what that kind of injustice does to someone. But does it have to be so on-the-nose? Does there have to be a guy that literally tells her "Why would you want to be powerful when you're a woman? Why don't you just want to have s.. with me?" Does her character need to end with speech about 'Roe v. Wade', or whatever the abortion thing is? I don't know who needs to read this, but people don't want political preaching in their horror TV shows.
Politics aside, poor characters aside, are there any interesting revelations in the end? No! Your first guess about the antagonist was 100% correct, and it's as simple as it gets - probably so simple that you'll be surprised. There's a bunch of plot threads that are hinted at, but promptly abandoned, such as what the family lawyer went through. And most annoying thing is the fact that episodes 2-7 suggested that each of the 6 kids had a chance to change the outcome of their stories, that there was a tipping point at which they ultimately doomed themselves by choosing not to stop with their way of living. Antagonist gave them the chance, but they refused to listen. However, when the show ends, you realize that these hints meant nothing. Their destiny was already sealed, and couldn't have been changed anyway. Whatever they did, the outcome would be the same.
If not for Kate Siegel and Carla Gugino, as well as some nice dark humor moments, it would've been a 3/10. What a disappointment...
Nope (2022)
Don't waste 2 hours of your life
Wow, Jordan Peele... and I thought that 'Us' was pretentious, plot-hole-ridden mess that tried to present itself as smart. Well, it was, but it was at least somewhat fun to watch, even if dumb.
But this movie is just a disaster. Out of 5 characters in the movie, four of them are goofy, cartoonish idiots that are constantly trying to be funny and laughably failing. The plot with the Asian guy and his chimpanzee trauma in childhood is just thrown there. I guess we should put some effort into trying to decipher the deeper meaning behind it.
Well, in order for me to put some effort into looking into themes of a movie, the plot needs to make sense and the movie needs to be at least somewhat interesting. It's like Jordan got drunk one night and wrote a bunch of completely unconnected stuff and was like "Yeah, they say I'm a smart director who explores deep themes of our society. I guess I can just come up with pointless meaningless stupidity and everyone's gonna just pretend they like it because of THEEMES".
Do not waste 2 hours of your life people, seriously... It's not worth it.
House of the Dragon: The Green Council (2022)
The worst episode so far. Writing is abysmal, season 8 level, and it's not only the last scene
After last couple of episodes, I was very optimistic regarding this show. It seemed that the writers were trying to pull of GoT seasons 1-4, but this episode was more of a season 8 writing. I have no idea how writing of this episode was approved.
How many times does Alicent need to learn that she has to be cruel and that her children will be endangered if Rhaenyra takes the throne? Didn't Otto teach her that several episodes ago? Oh, but in this episode we're establishing that women are so much better at ruling than men (again), so she needs to be a good, naïve person, surrounded by manipulative evil men.
Now she wants her son at throne just because of what Viserys told her when he was drugged as hell? Did writer of this episode read the scripts for the previous episodes? She's all surprised that the council has been plotting to put her son on the throne, even though her father has been literally telling her that for years??? I guess the character just doesn't exist anymore.
Rhaenys asks her whether she ever wanted herself on the Iron throne??? How the hell could she get on the throne? By killing her sons? What's the point of that stupid question? Is this some leftover dialogue from S8? It sure sounds that way.
The race between Alicent and Otto, where they're trying to find Aegon makes absolutely no sense. If you find him first, it gives you no guarantee that he'll listen to you for the next 3 decades of his rule, and not kill the other candidates for the throne. And Mysaria gives him away for the Otto's promise that he'll close the child-fighting pits? Wow, such a good strong woman she is. I only wonder if she things that he'll do that before or after he crowns the guy who frequently visits those pits???
Don't get me even started on the dagger callbacks. Do we need to be reminded of GoT S8 constantly? It's pointless and brings nothing to the story. It only invokes memories of the greatest failure in TV history. Stop it, please.
The last scene is just an icing on the cake. Cheap spectacle that aims at groups of people who are watching the show in pubs, filming themselves as they intentionally yell in order to try to get many views on their reaction videos. Makes zero sense and has no place in GoT universe. Where did she get the dragon armor that she wears? Who cares, it looks cool. It's like it comes from a Marvel movie. And it's not like there are no dragon scenes that make sense and that are spectacular. Why someone would invent a crappy scene like this is beyond me.
Even the CGI was bad in this one. I really hope that this was a one-time thing, but I somehow doubt it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Adrift (2022)
Excruciatingly boring with bland characters. Couldn't wait for it to end
Oh my... One day, this show will be taught in schools as an example of extremely bad writing. Characters are bland and uninteresting. There's a character that literally explains his past and his current motivations to the audience. Ever heard of "show, don't tell"? I guess not.
Galadriel jumped off the ship at the end of the last episode. One might wonder what her plan was. I mean, it's not like she would just jump into the sea and just try to swim across the whole sea and reach the Middle-Earth? Right? It's really reminiscent of how the Amazon did the Wheel of Time and that is not a good thing.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
Ruined by on-the-nose feminism
Some of the CGI is very questionable at best, but it's not a big deal. I like the atmosphere and tone of the show, it's very similar to GoT, but just can't help myself but notice how on-the-nose they are going with "women good, men bad" theme.
All of the men are violent stupid idiots (except for the race-swapped one), while all of the women are smart, stunning and brave. I knew that the whole male/female heir thing is a very good background for modern writers to add a bunch of feminist stuff to it, but I didn't know that they'd literally make up some events just to further prove their point that men are incompetent idiots and straight up evil, and this is just the first episode.
I can't say I'm surprised, they did announce this in the marketing materials, but it still hurts me to watch another thing that could've been so good, and to see the story ruined again.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
A (too) happy ending with an unfinished storyline
A huge battle scenes with some very questionable CGI (Amos flying towards railguns was painful to watch). Other than that, to me it just wasn't a satisfying end. All of the characters survive easily, even though some of them should've been dead. I thought that Clarissa would maybe sacrifice herself once she found out she was terminally ill, but no.
What's really annoying is the Laconia storyline that's just left completely unfinished. What about the zombie boy? Ooh, I guess we'll have a sequel/spinoff series about that. Don't have high hopes on that one.
Overall, a very meh finish of the series. Since I watched Dexter: New Blood recently and that was a complete disaster, my standards are pretty low now...
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
It's just out of character for Dexter to do what he does in this episode
It just doesn't make sense for Dexter to kill Logan. It's breaking the code and it's not necessary. Angela doesn't have any real evidence, neither does Angel.
Wouldn't it be interesting to see the two of them struggle to get all the evidence, knowing in their guts that he's the one, but being unable to prove it? Maybe Angela could've partially been on his side by the end, after seeing what Kurt had been doing for years?
It doesn't really matter that they killed him. But it's just out of character to go crazy all of a sudden and kill an innocent man. That's the worst thing...
American Horror Story: Winter Kills (2021)
Unsatisfying and dumb
Maybe the worst episode of AHS ever. Maybe we should be thankful that it's only 36 minutes long.
Lucifer: Save the Devil, Save the World (2021)
Pointless and boring
Extremely boring, drama-filled episode. Nothing makes sense anymore. Cause-consequence is nonexistent. It's like writers want something to happen and then just make it happen without any buildup.
You remember that Linda and Amenadiel had a child? Great, cuz showrunners don't. I guess it doesn't fit the story now or something...
Hagazussa (2017)
One of the most boring and pointless movies I have ever seen
Whole plot of this movie can be told in literally two sentences. Nothing is happening. And I liked The VVitch.
Builds into nothing. You can not make a movie that is composed of atmosphere and atmosphere only. Something needs to happen in a movie. Anything.
People who give this movie good grades are just pretending to be smart. Pointless garbage of a movie. I want 102 minutes of my life back.
The Nanny (2018)
Shockingly bad
This is one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen and I've seen a lot of bad ones. Bad script. Nothing makes sense. The nanny just shows up, mother knows nothing about her and she leaves her kids to her the same evening. She basically never heard of "agency" that nanny comes from but it doesn't matter. Later in the movie she meets a guy that lives in same town and had lost his daughter, yet she is the only person in town that doesn't know who he is. "Special effects" are 90's Power Rangers level bad. Everything is just awful in this movie and the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is the small amount of suspense in the first 20 minutes. Don't watch this, people. It is not even "So bad that it's entertaining". It's insulting...
The X Files: My Struggle IV (2018)
Just bad...
William is probably the worst protagonist ever. Did they watch Stranger Things and just tried to copy Eleven and create him that way? CSM already survived what no man could survive and we are supposed to be excited about Mulder "killing" him? This is just bad.. They should've just made a few "monster of the week" episodes. The whole main plot just became too dumb and awful and boring and pointless and so on... Let's just remind our selves why Scully even gave her son to adoption in the first place... Bad... Very bad..
