Helstrom (2020)
I stopped caring
I gave this show a good 5-episode run before I just had to stop. I had figured out what was wrong. The characters were simply unlikeable. All of them! The brother was constantly sulking. He seems annoyed to be 'helping out' but I can't imagine where he would rather be. He's an all-round dud. The sister seems to have an ever-growing, self-fueled, chip on her shoulder. The mentor was not particularly engaging nor believable in her role. She needed a doctorate to decide that the patient in her weakened state needed fresh air? The mentor's assistant who follows the nun around? Snooze. The nun-in-training? Every time her character popped back onscreen I had to remind myself of who she was. The possessed mother? Gimme a break. How long can you play out a demon-possession where nothing really happens? Then there was something with a skull and a gay police officer/boyfriend? Yawn. At no point did I find myself connecting with anyone over anything. I tried.
The Following (2013)
Nope
This show got annoyingly implausible in a New York minute!
From the fumbling and bumbling FBI agents, to the league of adoring fans so large a good 50% of the town is off-their-medication crazy following a guy whose charisma is yet to be seen, to the ex-wife taking the dumbest "risks", to...
Kevin Bacon's acting is superb but most of the characters seem to have bizarre one-track minds. It's like the writers fell asleep and the cameras started rolling so they went fishing for a plot but didn't find one.
Seriously, it is that bad. And no, increasing the number of flash- back scenes does not make it a more interesting show. It only adds a sprinkling of info to an already bored audience.
So watch the first 2 episodes tops and then find another show. You are warned!
Fresh Off the Boat (2015)
I guess it's improving, slowly
The premise is played out. You know, the non-black kid who tries to be black premise. This is most evident in the first 2 episodes. By episode 3, things start to pick up as we move away from the kid and toward the entire family, particularly the mom. Her character is hilarious! However it is not enough to carry the entire show unless all the scenes surround her. No amount of Notorious B.I.G. t-shirts really convince me that black culture has anything to do with this show. The main character's interactions at school are banal at best and the writers seem to be introducing new characters in an attempt to salvage the show. Why is the grandmother there? For snarky one- liners in Mandarin? The little brothers are there for what? To show that some siblings are more social than others?
Like I said, it is slowly improving. But it needs to hurry up.
Backstrom (2015)
Surprisingly boring
This is pretty much Dwight from The Office goes to forensics school. But it just doesn't work. Instead what we get is a grumpy cop whose contempt for his job and those around him is annoyingly unoriginal. He's not witty enough to be liked nor acerbic enough to be despised. He's just, sort of, meh. This is just another show created for a actor who played a popular character on another contemporary TV show. (Think: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyer, Kristen Wiig, Mindy Kaling, and a host of others who jump from show to show, and movie to movie, to the point of what I call "TV incest".
Sorry but Rainn Wilson cannot pull off his own show, especially if he intends on playing Dwight Schrute in it.
Believe (2014)
Believe? - No. I don't.
Terrible!
This show has so many inconsistencies that the writers don't bother to hide from the viewers. Maybe they're not paid enough. Maybe the actors aren't paid enough. I don't know what is it but the show stinks. Implausible after implausible scenario. Tate honestly thought other people planned his break from jail in exchange for nothing? Really? Why is he so grumpy toward them?
Also, how in the world do he and Bo afford any of basic necessities when they have no money? Why is Bo helpless in some situations and can move cars and summon wildlife in others?
Boo! What a lazily produced show.
