Everything Sucks! (2018)
I wanted to like this more, but I couldn't.
I don't usually write a lot of reviews on here, but I feel compelled after binge watching this entirely in one setting. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect, and I had no idea what this was going to be like, but I was hoping for the best. I was slightly disappointed unfortunately. The star of the entire show was Jahi Winston hands down. The way he portrayed the character, and some emotions he exhibited, was spectacular to say the least. Rio Mangini who played McQuaid will also have an AMAZING future. These two performances shined for me, let's move on from here, as I wanted to make this clear at the beginning.
Moving on to the plot itself. I'm someone who's weak for a hard hitting 90's theme, as I enjoy things made revolving around that era, and with Stranger Things swirling up the nostalgia industry, I did appreciate the try they did here, and It was much welcomed. As trite and cliche as it runs, the whole A/V Club - Drama Club thing has been seen before, but it felt special here for some reason (again probably relating to Jahi's performance). However, the fatal flow that blew this out for me was the plot direction with Peyton Kennedy's character, Kate. I understand the notion of it being a 'coming out' aspect in the writing, but it was so incredibly badly done that I even paused at some point and considered what the hell were those writers actually thinking. I mean yes, the twist of it not being the typical romance story between her character with Jahi is interesting, but during the end, you could feel a shift moving from Luke to Kate as the center of things, which is very problematic. I'm glad it didn't end as her coming out to her dad, because that would've been a horrible way to lead the direction. Also, it was very frustrating that they arched her love story towards Emaline, because that was the easy way to go with it, and watching the show, it just feels wrong for some reason. The characters seem to not fit at all, and granted people don't always fit in real life, but it was a weak move sincerely, as it could've been done way better, or postponed towards the future season if there is one. It felt to me, way way rushed and out of place, as Luke was the star of it all to be honest.
The soundtrack was great, and the acting by other members of the cast (other than the ones I mentioned) was OKAY. The weakest to me was Peyton Kennedy (who has a huge role in this), and that's just my opinion. Her acting felt very forced to me at times, and she doesn't fit the role well, or maybe it's just because I've seen that type of character way too many times before, it has to be one of those. Her character needs to be salvaged and worked on with great adjustments if this is on for a second season, as the potential is there. The writers NEED to step up and do better.
I wanted to rate this higher than a 6, I really did, but I'm hoping for the second season to convince me it deserves higher, as I did enjoy this season, despite the MANY flaws.
Backstrom (2015)
Solid good show.
I think Backstrom had a really solid pilot if you ask me. Up to the current episode, it's a win for me. Very entertaining and always keeps me wanting more.
Rainn Wilson portrays the lazy, humorous detective with complete genius. Yes, he is that good as an actor.
The show so far has been likened to House M.D. I really don't think they even tried to be like House with Rainn's character.
I read and heard some people saying that the supporting cast isn't up to the level, and some people even bashed on Rainn Wilson. I mean what do people want? People nowadays always want the next big thing to swoop over the TV and they rush into conclusions about shows based on watching ONE episode or reading reviews. People should not over hype EVERY new show that is about to be released. The supporting cast was very good and decent.
The show isn't ground breaking in no means. It is however a very solid and entertaining show to watch with a witty and dark lead character portrayed perfectly by Rainn Wilson.
Disconnect (2012)
A masterpiece
This movie simply spots the light on the worst parts of the internet. It shows how the internet, which is the greatest thing ever known to man in my opinion, how destructive it can be. Especially when it comes to the part of the teenage boy. This portrays the reality of cyber or online bullying to the spot. Really well done when it comes to that part, and a very good job done by the actors to shed light on the case, I almost believed what was happening in the movie to be real. The ideas and roles played were very very very realistic; you encounter these issues with friends, family, ... . A must watch movie, seriously just watch this movie as fast as you can and when you get the chance to watch it. A masterpiece.
