Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I gave it a 5 because of the actors
I'm sure in the future the success and hype of this movie will be seen as a collective hallucination. At least halfway the script starts to lose all sense and you start to disconnect yourself of what's happening. Oscar for best film? Bonkers. I would like to know what really happened behind the scenes in 2023 Oscars. Maybe they just didn't want to give any of the main awards to any of the other movies?
The performances are quite alright, true, I especially like Ke Huy Quan, but Jamie Lee Curtis? I quite like her, but her character is so absurd...
In short, not deserving of all the attention and awards, only amusing and entertaining in a Sharknado fashion.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Misogynistic to the core
I happened to watch this film only recently for the first time, in spite of it having been considered a classic by many for very long.
I was appalled by the romantization of the rape scenes (and the confusing plot, really), is the audience suposed to empathize with a rapist? And according to the reviews in this site, a lot of men do. Why on earth does Deborah ever want to talk to him or even look at his face again? Unbelievable.
Gokseong (2016)
Too long, too confusing
I get the movie is about evil spirits and demons, but really... nothing makes sense. And can the main characters be more careless and stupid?? I let it run till the end out of curiosity if any of what happened had any point, but it's pointless. Don't waste your time.
Emma. (2020)
Beautiful but shallow characters
The worst written Mr. Knightley I've seen, the screenplay lacks depth in spite of the perfect Austen's original.
Succession (2018)
Couldn't go beyond the 4th episode
We had enough of unlikeable spoiled characters and uncharismatic actors (with the exception of Brian Cox and Matthew McFadyen). Kieran Culkin, reeeally?
Dark (2017)
Confusion in disguise
Presenting confusion as complexity doesn't change the fact that this series is empty. Nothing inside.
Politiki kouzina (2003)
Does this really deserve a score higher than 6?
I saw this film a couple of days ago on TV, it was highly praised by critics in Spain when it was released in theaters... I wonder why. I can only think it was the kind of snobbish and European-focused celebration some of them put against the American way of movie-making. I found the movie utterly mediocre, although brimming with good intentions I must admit. But this is not enough to make a movie even acceptable. Bad acting, ridiculous effects, sometimes even confusing storyline for a non-Greek... The movie fails to convey the depth of the relationship between the little boy and his grandfather, supposed to be the cornerstone of the story, at least it did not work for me. I can't understand why they haven't seen each other for such a long time and I can't believe that a boy 5 years old keeps the same love interest for 30 years, come on... If you want to see in film a perfect combination of love for food and personal life, check out the Mexican "Como agua para chocolate".
The Winter Guest (1997)
Why has Rickman never ever directed any other film after?
I've been a Rickman fan for a long time, I knew about this film, but I never got to see it at the theaters when it was released. Still, it remained for 10 years in my list of "things to do". I saw it today and I'm not the least disappointed. According to current standards, nothing really happens in this film, yet... so much happens. I simply loved it, it's so subtle, it looks so uncomplicated... apparently, still it talks about so many complicated facts of life: growing older, mother and daughter relationship, sexual awakening. I found the atmosphere superb, you do feel the freezing air around you, the white light makes you feel time stands still somehow. I found it highly recommendable and I keep repeating my summary line, why didn't Rickman ever go back to directing?
