Muirhouse (2012)
Not scary, no story, not worth it at all
After reading the review that said this was a scary awesome story, I decided I had to see it. MAN was that review misleading! I felt like we must have been watching two different movies!
In the beginning of the story, where found footage movies usually give you some background on the ghost's story and the methods of the investigators was normally present here. But after having the various tools that paranormal investigators use described to us and how important they are, the main character uses nothing but a camcorder and a flashlight! What the hell?! What did he expect to find out that way?! Not only did he use none of the tools needed to carry out an investigation (and he was suppose to be a writer of haunting's, ha!) he didn't even try to communicate with the entities beyond screaming "who's there!". And to add a complaint about the ghosts, all the ghosts did throughout the entire movie was slam a couple doors and make the lights go out. Come on!
The movie opens with the police looking for a crazed man on the highway with no shirt and a hammer in his hand. Sounds super promising right? They find him and the guy is totally out of it and swinging the hammer at the cops. But in the movie the last thing the ghosts do to him is throw him into a wardrobe and close the door. So you have no idea what it was that made him so crazy or why he was carrying the hammer or wandering around along the highway! What the hell?!
This movie lacked any scares, lacked any explanations, lacked any reason to care what happened to the main character, and just lacked everything that makes most found footage movies a thrill to watch. And hey, I LIKE Australian movies! But WOW was this a let down. I would not recommend this to um....any audience.
Dead Mine (2012)
Good "TV movie" style action flick
I suppose I am in the minority in liking this movie.
Once I got the feel for the style of movie it was (its more like a TV movie than a feature film, you can tell by the poor quality of the indoor sets, the not so smart dialogue, etc), my expectations lessened and I loosened up and came out of it satisfied. It kind of reminded me of other movies that I enjoyed like The Descent and Devils Pass.
The story wasn't original (people with a hidden agenda hiring ex-army guys to guide them through a hostile jungle) but the acting was believable, the way the hidden agenda unfolds is full of action and there was even an unexpected ending.
Would I watch it again and recommend it to people who don't mind HBO Asia movies, yes.
I guess I'm a cheese ball.
Big Ass Spider! (2013)
Surprise! A smart and hysterical creature feature! About time!
I am a fan of creature features and this one delivered more than I expected.
The acting was smart, quick and funny, which not many creature features deliver. It was great to see a character from the LOST TV series again in a starring role. His sidekick also surprised me because he wasn't dumbed down or there to just hand things to the main character. He was integral and just as funny as his partner. I'll say there wasn't any flat acting from any of the characters in this film (even the Army guys). So that already raises this creature feature above most others.
The spiders, the locations, the props all looked great, so you can tell more was put into this movie than the average creature feature. The special effects were believable and the use of a Pixie's song amid chaos was awesome (kind of reminded me of when they did it in Observe and Report).
This movie kept me engaged from start to finish and I'd love to see this director raise other creatures to this level of feature! I even recommend it to those who are not a fan of the genre, because its a great action comedy in itself.
7 Nights of Darkness (2011)
A "Found Footage" Failure
I am a fan of "found footage" films. This one started out much the same way as others in the genre do, a groups of strangers spending the night in a haunted house. But comparatively, this film falls short of its competitors.
Unfortunately, none of the characters were likable enough to care what befalls them. Likable characters I believe is a pretty important factor in found footage films because they are the ones revealing the story to you. But in this film, their acting seemed forced and unnatural, and natural is what you're suppose to be going for in found footage films. The characters didn't even care what was happening to each other, which just compounded the viewers lack of caring about them.
The scares were too few and far between and didn't last very long. They never explain anything about the history of the house they were in, so the viewer couldn't even connect with the ghosts.
The fact that nothing is explained could work for some found footage films, but not this one because it lacked so many other things. The film seemed like someones pet project, with a slightly higher video quality.
I wouldn't see it again and I wouldn't recommend it to fans of the genre.
