The Rhythm Section (2020)
A No-Action Action Movie
This movie just didn't grab me. This movie maybe could have worked if Blake Lively's character was played by a different actress. She was basically playing the same character she always plays, but she's a bit moodier with a British accent, and they tried to downplay her looks.
All of the action scenes were weak. I feel like they were meant to be more skilled killer-esque, but Blake didn't really have the training or fierceness to pull it off, so they went for the clumsy, "emotional" side to being an assassin instead.
I read somewhere in the reviews that this is based on a book. I'll probably give it a read to see if this was how it was meant to be. At face value though, it's an extremely slow, action movie with no action. I'd skip it.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
June Is Insufferable
It's almost laughable how unlikable they've made her character. I couldn't finish the last season. I barely made it to episode 8, but I'm throwing in the towel after that episode. I won't be watching anymore.
Dune (2021)
Could Not Hold My Attention
Please don't watch this is you're not familiar with the story. This clearly wasn't made for beginners. I wonder if I'd read the book or watched the original, would I have been able to follow it.
I gave up a little over an hour in. I just didn't understand any of it, and it moves so slow that it's difficult to piece together scenes to try and figure it out.
I'm glad I watched this on HBO Max and didn't pay for it. I'd give this a hard pass.
Night Teeth (2021)
I'd Rather Watch Twilight
Yep, I'd rather sit through an hours long marathon of Twilight than to watch this movie ever again. This is the epitome of the woke, gen z'ers useless generation. If the movie hadn't been about vampires... it still would've sucked. No real story in this. If this had maybe been a sequel to another movie, I'd understand. The way it was set up, it's like they expected you to know the backstory for what's going on.
Hard pass if you haven't seen it yet.
What Happened, Brittany Murphy? (2021)
Disrespectful To Brittany's Memory
This is completely disrespectful, and I didn't finish it. Incorporating social media influencers in this made it very hard to take seriously. If you're going to tell her story, then do it in a respectful way. Shame on you, HBO.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Couldn't Finish It
This movie is way too long. There are way too many slow motion scenes in this. It's the main reason I quit watching it an hour and nine minutes in. I might watch the rest later, but most of it feels like filler and is hard to follow... probably because I'm bored and ready to get to the point of it all. I'll admit to being an MCU fan. I prefer DC characters, but the MCU just does a better job at storytelling. EndGame was 3 and a half hours, and there was never a slow, pointless moment in that movie. This had about 10 of them just in the first hour.
Chicago Party Aunt (2021)
Embarrassing Portrayal Of Chicago
I was born and raised in Chicago, and I don't know anyone who talks or acts like these people. The Chicago accent being used is ridiculous and over the top. Some of the way their words are pronounced sounds similar, but no one in Chicago has an accent that thick. I gave up after 3 episodes. Give this show a miss.
On My Block (2018)
Painfully Predictable And Poorly Acted
I really only watch this show for Jamal and Ruby. I was sick of the Monse/Cesar story like 2 episodes in. Their relationship is ridiculously predictable and poorly written. I'm not sure which character is worse. This show wasn't really written for a broader audience. If you're over the age of 21, you'd probably get tired of it quickly. It is very much a teeny bopper soap opera.
Encore! (2019)
Wonderful!
I hate I didn't discover this until Disney+. It looks like it's done, but they need to somehow bring this back. I wish my high school had a theater department so I could've done something like this. So sweet. I had a big smile on my face watching every episode. I'm proud of everyone that participated!
Kate (2021)
Better Than Most People Think
I think people waste too much time trying to compare this movie to everything else. Let it be what it is. I really enjoyed it. The pacing was really well done, and there wasn't a dull moment in the movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead did an awesome job and so did everyone else. I know in this she's an assassin, but I couldn't help but root for her and wanted a positive outcome for her. I would've loved to have seen more of Woody Harrelson. The only reason I'm not giving it 10 stars is because the audio was weird. I kept having to turn up and down the volume. Also, there was a weird thing with subtitles missing towards the end. I'm not sure if that was intentional during the big reveal or not, but one of the characters was speaking Japanese and what he said wasn't translated. I personally wanna see the main actress in more action. She was awesome in Birds of Prey, and she was giving me Trinity vibes with that haircut in this movie.
Cruella (2021)
This Is Just... Cringe
I'm glad I didn't pay to watch this. I couldn't finish it. The acting was way over the top. The story didn't make much sense. Emma Stone's accent is ridiculous. The only thing I really liked were the cute doggies.
Wentworth (2013)
Yeah... I'm Giving This A Pass.
10 minutes into the second episode of the 1st season, and I'm done. There's a prison riot where someone dies. A woman who is somehow allowed to have her kid in the prison sees the dead body, and in the very next episode, they're still letting this girl in the prison?
I'm American, so I don't know if prison is really like whatever the hell country this is based in, but if it is, that's seriously effed up. If it's not, then that's some horribly bad writing.
Either way, I wouldn't recommend this show.
October Faction (2020)
Couldn't Even Finish Episode 3
I don't know what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting some horrible teen soap opera. I can't tell if the acting's bad or the writing, but it's really hard to watch. They all have dry personalities with no layers to them.
The two teenagers are not likable at all, especially the brother. The husband and wife have zero chemistry. The dad looks so frickin old, and I was shocked to see that he's actually the same age as the mom in real life.
I would give this a pass. Netflix really needs to start QAing these shows. Maybe it could've been edited differently to be solid, because the idea for the show seems cool, but this is just... no, NO.
Netflix, get it together! Stop throwing money at garbage like this and cancelling stuff people actually wanna watch. I feel like this platform is becoming the place to go to for B movies and TV shows.
The Witcher (2019)
Not For Newcomers. Give This A Pass
I've never played the games or read the books. They don't explain anything, and I was confused the entire time. They don't explain what the magical characters are and what they can do. There are scenes that were apparently flashbacks, but they make no indication that they are. It's hard to tell what's happening in the present and what has already past. Does someone at Netflix ever watch these shows before releasing them? Why are so many of their shows so bad? Don't waste your time. I do plan on reading the books but not because I like the show. I'm hoping the books can explain what the show failed to... which is everything.
StartUp (2016)
The Rating This Show Has Is Undeserved
I literally couldn't make it past 5 minutes into episode 5 of the first season. I tried, because I like Edi and Martin, but the writing is trash and completely unrealistic.
The actress who plays Izzy is horrific. I don't know if she was told to act like an annoying, spoiled brat or if this woman has the range of a teaspoon, but she was not cutting it for me. I couldn't stomach the show mostly because of her.
Them (2021)
The actors and actresses in this show were completely wasted on this
I wanted to like this. I really did, but I'm not seeing the point to it at all. They had so many side stories that added up to and clarified nothing. Nothing came together or clicked. I was too confused to actually be scared of the so-called scary scenes.
It seems like it was only made for others to watch black people suffer and further divide.
The actors did a wonderful job with what they had, and that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. The failure of this show falls solely on the creator, producers and writers. Do better. If you wanna jump on the Jordan Peele bandwagon, then make it make sense. SMH
Don't renew this.
Firefly Lane (2021)
I Really Tried To Give This A Chance
I've just made it to episode 7, but I'm not sure I can finish this show. The tone of the show is confusing. There are moments where I feel like I should take the show seriously and others where it feels like an over-produced soap opera. Other than the two main characters, I'm not sure who I'm actually supposed to care about. The chemistry between all the characters is inconsistent and flip flops based on whatever random flashback they want us to care about.
And don't get me started on the flashbacks. They were all over the place and overkill. Most of them don't seem relevant to whatever the point of this story is. I don't know if I should care more about these characters' past or their present. They should've just made a show about these two characters in the 80's. The stuff in 2003 just isn't holding my interest.
Dark (2017)
Complex For The Sake Of Being Complex
I really enjoyed the first season and got through the second. I can't even finish the third season. I love a good, complex storyline, but they went overboard in this show.
A lot of annoying, vague and repetitive dialogue. If I hear one more time "the end is the beginning and the beginning is the end," I'm gonna lose it. Not to mention how many times they kept using the phrase "the origin" and never really explain what it is.
The third season had a lot of excruciatingly slow filler scenes that didn't advance the story in any way. I actually fell asleep three times trying to get through it. I gave up after episode 4 of season 3.
I may come back to it, because I'd like to see how the show ends. You can just tell though by the way this third season's going, they've run out of things to throw at us, so they've just gone for confusing you as much as possible to keep you tuned in just to figure out what's going on.
I'm only giving this a 5/10. The actors were great (although I LOATHE Hannah), but the story started to fall off for me in the second season and completely lost me in the third.
Selena: The Series (2020)
Definite Cash Grab For Everyone Involved. No Substance Whatsoever
My title pretty much says it all. I tried to give it a chance, but this is nothing more than a cookie cutter image of what everyone assumed Selena was. You don't really learn much about who she is as a teenager and woman and her background. This show is very much focused on the family - the father and brother in particular. I would not waste your time watching this if you're hoping to see an in-depth story of Selena's life. I won't be tuning in for part 2.
