Fargo (2014)
A great series, but series 4 is awful.
Imagine really enjoying a series then you tune into the 4th season and it's been taken over by BLM and turned into a crazy woke version of the 1950's. The first 3 seasons are excellent, but the 4th is horrific - give it a miss.
Das Boot (2018)
Best series I've seen in ages.
Das Boot the film was a masterpiece and this series does it justice. Incredible tension, great acting, great characters, attention to detail, historically accurate, superb direction and a binge worthy plot. Twists and turns, jaw dropping surprises that keep you wanting to watch just one more episode. It's hugely exciting and will have you on the edge of your seat. I just can't praise it enough.
There are 2 main plot lines, the submarine warfare in the North Atlantic, and the domestic situation in La Rochelle. In La Rochelle it's Resistance fighters, mixed loyalties, informants, subterfuge, spies, gestapo, love affairs and life under occupation. In the North Atlantic the claustrophobic terror of submarine warfare, the iron will and ego's of the captains and the skill and courage of their crews. Some of the submarine scenes are absolutely nail biting, and the submarine crews are characters that stay with you long after you've switched off.
This is one of the best series I've seen in ages, absolutely gripping, fingers crossed they make a season 3.
Greyhound (2020)
Disappointing
A Tom Hank's war movie sounded perfect. However, this is a poor effort and it was actually an effort to finish it. Apart from the boring, mundane plot there is very little character development or human interest going on.
The battle scenes are hopelessly unrealistic and there's a complete lack of tension and suspense throughout.
If you've ever seen Das Boot or The Cruel Sea you'll know what I'm talking out. Being stalked in the Atlantic by a wolf pack must have been terrifying, but Greyhound just doesn't get close to conveying this.
Moving on, the actual U Boat attacks were ludicrously bad, and this really hit Greyhound below the water line. While watching the hapless U Boats I genuinely wondered if the u boat crews were trying to get themselves sunk.
Over all very disappointing, this is best given a wide berth.
Midway (2019)
A cartoonish CGI disaster
This film is only good for showing the complete creative bankruptcy of much of modern cinema.
There is so much CGI the entire film has a cartoonish feel. Even the old 1970's version is vastly superior and shows that in the last half century film making has gone backwards. This is a disaster of a movie and a crime against cinema. Stop all the crappy special effects and get back to making watchable films.
Public Enemies (2009)
Was the shot on a smartphone?
Great cast, some solid performances and exciting action. There is a good film in there somewhere, but the look of this film is terrible. It has a grainy look and feel. I'm not sure what purpose this serves but for me it kills a potentially good film. Imagine walking around a movie set with a smartphone and you get the idea of just how bad the film looks on screen.
This is a huge disappointment and I stopped watching half way through.
