...and you thought there is no way you can totally ruin a comedy!
5 September 2016
It took this movie around 30 minutes to make me wanna turn it off. I didn't, but at least I can help others not to make the same mistake. So if you watch this movie and you don't like how it goes, you should know it won't get any better. Now let's talk about its type. This is not comedy. I bet you can find more funny lines in a random drama movie. This movie is cynical and wrong in so many ways that you just sit there on top of your sofa thinking how on earth could someone possibly put this all together?! It's not very predictable, but it gets so bad that you would even prefer it to be predictable instead of horrible. But you don't have to take my word for it, check it out.

Great piece of story about acceptance and deception
4 June 2016
I watched this as part of TIFF 2016 (Transilvania International Film Festival) and it was on my extended list of movies I should check out, but boy - what I was about to miss! The whole story is taking place in a Mexican warehouse and it's focusing on two characters. We've got the senior employee, who's been in charge of the warehouse for his entire life basically and he's been strictly following the rules - absurd or not - for this whole time. Aaand we get the newcomer, the young spirited guy who's ready to take on a new job and has no more than 5 days to learn all he needs to know. The whole movie is based on the hours the two characters spend together, hours full of lessons for both sides. It had its funny moments when the whole crowd was laughing and it had its moments of wisdom that left the cinema hall in silence. I had no idea who the characters are nor who directed the movie, but they all did a wonderful job. I even rated the movie with the highest score for TIFF People's Choice Award. If you get the chance to watch this movie, do it. It's better than a short description can tell.

Not as good as you would expect
21 May 2016
I know, the plot sounds really good. A 30 years-old woman searching for her true love is cursed, so that all of her pretenders die unexpectedly. It's gotta be a mystery, a thriller, what can go wrong? Well, if you are used to what Hollywood calls a Sci-fi, this is probably not for you. First of all, for some reason, this movie makes too many characters look like they are socially dumb. It's got too much silence in a bad way, I mean not that type of silence you would enjoy, the boring one. Secondly, it's not realistic. I know, it's supposed to be a fiction, but the viewers should still find a convincing plot. You might think it's a fairy-tale, but again, it's not quite there. It feels like this movie can not define itself. I'm not going to say more, don't want to spoil it. Lastly, the curse- breaking is not sensational. It feels like the writers had no good idea about how the story should end so they threw in some nice effects and everybody is happy. Nope, not really. The only funny thing about it were the older cops (again, not telling you more so it won't become a spoiler), but again, you were not supposed to have a funny moment as a highlight for this movie. Trying too much, not getting anywhere. But don't simply believe me, go check it out.

Modern days drama
15 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
--- MODERATE LEVEL OF SPOILER --- I will start this review by saying that I was myself involved in a volunteering program dealing with socially marginalized children and I know their every day struggle. This movie is all about how 3 young Roma children are able to grow and take care of themselves, while their mother is sentenced to prison for drug selling. The every day life of Toto (the youngest of the children), Andreea and Ana is superbly described and the producers do a really good job in capturing what's really important. Not to mention that some of the scenes were filmed by the children themselves with a small video camera. With so many different views - the poor life of the Romas living in Bucharest's neighborhood Ferentari, the prison, the school, the home for abandoned children, even a footage of the Romanian Drug Enforcement Police Department - this documentary has it all. It's a masterpiece and you can not simply pass by it without feeling any emotion. Go watch it, you'll not regret.
