The Alzheimer's Project (2009)
Very Helpful Regarding Impact on Family; Progress Overstated
While I loved the human element/cost discussed in the documentary, the scientists made it sound like we were on the cusp of important treatments, and that was back in 2009. We still only have Aricept and a newer medication that was very controversial for even getting FDA approval because of the poor performance in the human trials. Let's look into the effects of THC on preventing the plaque build-up due to Amyloid Beta. We need to investigate both what causes the uptake of Amyloid Beta but also what helps with the clearance, which is causing the accumulation.
Reacher (2022)
Best Action in any movie/series since Borne Identity.
Although Reacher's abilities are natural and not the result of a science experiment like Jason Borne, I see a lot of similarities in their style and abilities. This is domestic and not international, but the level of intrigue is the same. I almost never score anything above an 8, as there's almost always room for a little improvement. But this series is the best of the genre. Anyone who gave it a 1-5 does not need to be watching this genre because this is as good as it gets. You will be binge watching by about episode 3 or 4.
Condor (2018)
Great espionage tension and actors
The show is very binge-worthy and has interesting plot lines and wonderful actors. I just wish they would do sub-titles in English when the Russian spies talk to each other for five minutes. I mean, WTF? Why bother with that dialogue when 99% of the people have no clue what they're saying? But that's my only real criticism. Otherwise, I like all the twists and turns the story takes. Don't try to compare it to the movie. Judge it as a stand alone spy show.
Edge of Fear (2018)
Better than Average
I gave it a six because the acting was good (some favorites from Prison Break) even though the writing was average. It starts out strong and gets a little predictable at the end, in my opinion, but there were still some interesting moments (including one humerous scene in the bedroom) and surprises.
Mr. Mercedes (2017)
Love the bad guy, hate the ridiculous premise of Season 2
I was riveted by season 1 and was anxious to start season 2. The whole premise of entering a human's mind and controlling them via...what? Wifi? Microwaves, LOL? I'm still watching it because I like the actors but the storyline for season 2 is ridiculous.
Harrow (2018)
Great Plot Development
I very much enjoyed Season 1 and understanding the role Harrow played in the murder. The character development and plot twists kept it very interesting.
I saw Season 2 is supposedd to start sometime in March. I hope we get an announcement soon! I'm looking forward to the new season!
The Favourite (2018)
Great Character Development, Story a Miss
I'm a fan of period pieces and the acting was wonderful, but the storyline just didn't do it for me. They tried to be humorous or tongue-in-cheek and the humor often missed. The first half was so slow I almost didn't want to finish the movie but I stuck with it. The 2nd half of the story was significantly better but the ending fell flat, as well. I could see nominating the actors for best in their category but it doesn't hold up to Best Picture quality, IMO.
Berlin Station (2016)
Military Industrial Complex Manufacturing Consent
As I think about how much I appreciate what Snowden did to uncover how our privacy was being compromised, this reeks of the government trying to justify how they cross the line. Sorry, no. Don't allow yourself to be brainwashed by this narrative.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
Best "Dramedy" bar none!
I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this show! Season 1 was great and I binge-watched Season 2 in two nights! I love the examination of a woman trying to make it in the industry in the 60's when women are not thought of as anything more than a wife or maybe a secretary. The Jewish American Princess take on it just makes it that much funnier. It's funny, it's poignant, and it's intelllectual without being the least bit corny or stuffy.
I've seen this actress in dramas like House of Cards and Manhattan but she's really in her element here! The support cast has lots of big name actors as well. So well done!
Legacies (2018)
Great Young cast in Vampire Diaries Tradition
I agree with all the other reviewers except "Splaric22" who obviously needs wo be watching another genre. Like another reviewer, I didn't get into The Originals spinoff of Vampire Diaries, which I loved. But this is a nice blend of both set back in Mystic Falls. The story starts interestingly, the way it leads us to the school. The pace was good and just the right mix of action and teen angst to keep it interesting. If the other episodes follow this mix it will be an interesting watch.
The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (2018)
Excellent Whodunnit Featuring Strong, Smart Women
This is an excellent period piece bravely tackling the subject matter of sexism and racism in the storyline of a crime drama featuring strong female characters. The side plot of the challenges the women face being taken seriously during those times adds an extra layer of complexity to the plot line. They use their skills as code breakers that brought them together during the war to find clues about the murderer. Many serial killers have patterns and rituals so this is not a stretch. There are a couple of reviews that talk about "pushing agendas" and being overly "PC", but I couldn't disagree more; sounds like mansplaining to me.. I've seen the first 4 episodes and I'm waiting for episode 5. I believe there are supposed to be 8 episodes in Season 1, altogether.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Great Show
I think this show does a great job of exploring the differences between the way "normal" people pick up on emotions and nonverbal ques and how someone on the spectrum does. Unlike the review by "the bricks" (aka brickhead) I know for a fact that there are a lot of "savant" doctors on the spectrum. Most tend to go into specialties where they don't interact with patients as much, like Radiology, Anesthesiology, or research, but brickhead is clueless about the realities or the intellect of some people on the spectrum. The autistic aspect of the show is a tool used to delve into the psychology of various relationships. And it is meant to be entertainment, as well, so things that are POSSIBLE but not that probable, like airport emergency tracheotomies are done for entertainment value. Go watch an ER reality show if it's pure realism you're looking for, for Pete's sake. I love the interactions between the different characters. He's currently dealing with a neighbor who is taking advantage of him. Very interesting.
Olympus (2015)
Poor Production Value Looks Like Old B Movie
I was SO looking forward to the premiere of OLYMPUS. I was disappointed at the weak initial character development and production value/cinematography and scene setting. It looked like I was watching a Lost in Space or I Dream of Jeannie (both good in their day) 40 years ago. You could clearly tell the actors were placed over footage from somewhere else. If it's CGI, it's bad CGI. Not even CLOSE to 300! I've seen cable channels like The 100 on CW do MUCH better with their backdrops and action sequences. The acting of the lead actor and the Oracle was OK but a lot of the other actors came off as hokey and artificial. A lot of that might have been due to the script and directing. I want to give this another chance but if this is the best you can do with the production of the show it's not going to make it.
