In weiter Ferne, so nah! (1993)
horrible horrible movie
I LOVED Wings of Desire more than I can express and was looking forward to the sequel. It was so long in coming that I thought perhaps the "To Be Continued..." at the end of Wings was a comment about life continuing. I went into Far Away, So Close with high hopes that were utterly dashed. It was convoluted, busy, and stupid. I instantly wished I had never seen it and had kept my memory of Wings untainted with such drivel. I am stunned to see that so many people liked it. They must not have seen Wings. The scene where the circus performers and Peter Falk rob the porn warehouse is particularly cringe inducing. Someone please burn the negative.

This movie is painful
I sat through this movie only to be able to say I sat through one of the worst films ever made. For all of it's slick production values, international cast, and fancy plotting it is a long frustrating mess. At first it seemed like it was going to be pretty good, corporate intrigue, catty women, poison, etc., etc.. Then it started to get weird. We discover that the corporation markets internet porn and somewhere around there the movie kept seeming to re-set itself. The director/writer didn't seem to care about whether any scene before bore any relation to the scenes after it other than having the same characters. At every point when you think, "Oh we might get to a different point in this subplot" NOTHING happens and and we watch helplessly as another never to be resolved subplot unveils itself. What got me the most enraged was the idiotically moralistic turn at the end of the movie. here is a film about internet porn "magnates" backstabbing each other that takes a fifteenth-rate Lynchian twist into confusing conspiracy ruminations before arriving at the conclusion that internet porn is bad leads to rather far fetched exploitation and bondage, possibly drug induced or maybe even subconsciously willing. Look out mom and dad! It all can be accessed by your kids in the privacy of their rooms. You might think Junior is IMing his friends but he has actually accessed an super-secret snuff porn site and is acting out his fantasies of rape and mutilation on the former vice president of the company, who went too far and knew too much. Strange that the up and coming vice president doesn't know about that site but Junior does. Being told that internet porn is bad for kids and they can too easily get a hold of it after watching what felt like four hours of muddled corporate intrigue and the descent of one of the purveyors into sexual bondage and maybe death, doesn't inspire me to invest in the V-CHIP. Like Showgirls, this films revels in what it later treats with sanctimonious sermonizing. Bloody awful.
