The 100 (2014)
I'm in the middle of the road on this one.
First off I'll say the SFX, CGI, costumes, scenery and actors of this show are great. Wow, that's a lot of great for someone to be in the middle of the road you might ask. True, but I haven't gotten to the writing yet. Yikes! I hate, HATE, when smart characters are written to do absolutely stupid things over and over again and have no common sense. I don't need to go into specifics because it happens almost constantly in every episode, at least it seems that way to me. Anyone can do stupid things SOMETIMES, but come on! I know people who never or rarely do or say stupid things. Can we get someone like that in this show to represent? Please?
Also, it seems that anyone is an expert when they need to be. They are all IT specialists, marksmen, medics, demolition expert, mechanics, martial artists, etc. One example is Octavia, a young petite girl who has lived her whole life in a single small room when she wasn't hiding in a very small hole in the floor to avoid being floated. How she came to be a rather sex starved skank I'm not sure. Did her mother give her inappropriate reading material to pass the time when she was in the floor? I don't know. She did, some how, become a combat queen. Kicking butt and killing men and women larger and more skilled than she. I reiterate, she lived her whole life in a small room and in the floor. Sheesh. Do NOT tell me she got all that from 'grounder training', just don't.
Next, I just finished Season 5 Episode 1. It starts off with Clarke coming out of the bunker she made it to with very little radiation damage to her face which was severely radiation burned at the end of last season. This is only 42 days after the Primefaya devastated most of the planet. I have a lot of WTFs about this. No hair loss? Thank God, she does have beautiful hair, I'd hate to see it gone or patchy. Perfect skin? Except for a few red patches in areas that don't ruin her good looks, she has perfectly healed skin, and I'm sure those patches will be completely gone in a few episodes. She leaves the safety of the bunker after 42 days when she and the others were to go in to space for 5 years to wait until it was safe again? Umm...why? Did she somehow realize they made a mistake in judging how long the radiation would last? 42 days vs 5 years is a big mistake. I've gone on long enough, and could go on much longer about the major idiocies in the writing of these episodes, but I won't.
I have watched every episode because of the stuff I like about it. I hope the writers get their *hit together and give the fans a good ending. Seeing as how they are in the 5th season there may not be many more to come.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Very Funny, lots of laughs.
I just watched this and couldn't stop laughing. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan all delivered the laughs.
The reasons I didn't give it a 10 rating are the CGI for some of Ruby Roundhouse could have been much better and the penis jokes didn't make the movie any funnier so they could have been left out, movies parents and their children would like to watch together don't need that.
As for some of the bad reviews I've read, I don't know what they are looking for in what can be defined as slapstick comedy. One reviewer was talking about plot holes and others just said it wasn't funny at all. This isn't a movie that makes you "think" so looking for plot holes is a waste. If you don't think this was funny then you don't have a sense of humor.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Incredible re-telling of the King Arthur legend
Wow, just Wow! I am a huge fan of all things Arthur/Excalibur/Merlin. This telling was done so well I have to say it's my favorite of them all. Excalibur (1981) Directed by John Boorman was in the #1 spot, a good run of 36 years, but has now been bumped to the #2 spot. Casting was great. FX were great. Musical score was great. Everything was great thus the 10/10 rating I give it. This is a telling of Arthur to King Arthur and no further than that...yet. I hope they make another or four. So if you want to spend a fun and exciting couple of hours watching a movie, this is one to watch.
The Dark Tower (2017)
Why did you get me excited and then pull this out?
I gave this flick a 5/10 just for the cool reloading sequences. Its a shame they didn't do it right and make several great movies instead of a 95 minute rush job that didn't do the books any justice. The movie just fell flat. No character building what so ever. I don't expect movies adapted from books to follow every line but come on! Way back when I first read 'The Gunslinger' I thought about how I would love to see this made into a movie, and that's just the first book. Then years later I hear they are making a movie! Yes! Very excited! Then I go see this travesty! I want my money back.
People of Earth (2016)
Best comedy out there
Excellent! Hands down the funniest show out there now. If I had to say something negative about People of Earth it would be that the episodes (about 20 minutes) and seasons (10 episodes) are too short. I cannot get enough of this show. I've binge watched seasons 1 and 2 a few times already and season 2 just ended. The cast is fantastic. Everyone has done a great job fleshing out their character. The writers, what can I say, I love you, and that's from the heart. Well, now that its out there I have to share the love with everyone associated with this show. Keep up the incredible work and Thank You! Everyone, Watch this show!
Inhumans (2017)
Not bad, but not great either
I have never read the comics, never even heard of Inhumans. I have read several reviews, both positive and negative, and agree with bits of both. Not knowing the Inhumans, I would have liked some back story, even if it was just a narrative during the opening credits, so I could have a bit of understanding who these people are. The producers/writers may give us flashbacks to fill us in, but that doesn't help us now. Us being viewers who don't know this story but like all things sci-fi. The CGI was great IMO. The acting by some can use improvement. The choreography of the fight scenes needs a LOT of work. Medusa's hair when "active" looks good, but when inactive just looks bad. Many, many shows get off to a rough start but improve as the cast and crew get their feet under them. I'm hoping this is going to happen here because I see huge potential for this show. That is why I give it a 6/10. There is a little more good than bad and it can, and probably will, get better with time.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
I will keep watching
I will keep watching because I believe it will get better as time goes by just like almost every other show does. Many other reviews explained this in detail so I won't bother to reiterate. The visuals are stunning. IMO anyone who says different is a STOS purist with their panties in a twist over other issues they have with STD (unfortunate initials), so they want to bash everything about this new series no matter how stupid. I do have issues with this show like many others, but still think the show can get its feet under it and really blow us away. I'm going to give the show the time it needs to develop the characters. For the actors to get in to their roles. For the writers to flesh them out and make me care for them. As for the Klingons, I don't care that they look like an entirely different species. All I have to know is that they ARE Klingons. Their look has changed with every incarnation. This particular incarnation is pretty ugly and terrifying looking. A good thing for bad guys. I would rather not have to read subtitles though, so lets get the universal translators working. The tilted camera angles in scenes where there is no reason for it drove me nuts. If the ship isn't being blasted by torpedoes there is no reason for it. If crewmen are just talking and nothing else is happening keep the camera level please. Its not artistic, its stupid. The advanced technology is unfortunate, but to me, is forgivable. In STE, when they first fired a torpedo and it bounced of the shield and went tumbling away into space, I was LMAO! Well, to sum up, I like it and think it has the potential to get better and win over some of the naysayers. Oh yeah, I guess we know what the BS in CBS stands for. Shame on you for charging us yet again when we're already paying an arm and a leg for cable. And with all those F'ing commercials too! WTF!!
Slipstream (2005)
I bought this DVD at a thrift store for a buck and I want my buck back
Horrible. One of the worst movies I have ever watched. Actually I only watched half, I couldn't take anymore than that. Nothing was good about this "film" apart from the plot which sounded great on the DVD jacket. The Director needs to learn how to do his job. The writers of the dialogue need to be banned from ever putting word to paper again. The actors could have ruined their careers with this. I like Sean Astin for his roles in films like LotR and Rudy. So I know he's better than this. At the time of my writing this review the "film" is 12 years old. Even though most people who would have watched it have done so, I feel an obligation to society to try and make sure nobody else wastes time and money, even if you find it for a buck like I did, on this garbage.
