Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Excellent comedy-Clooney and Zeta-Jones sparkle
A refreshing, memorable comedy from the Coen brothers. Intolerable Cruelty features George Clooney as a highly successful divorce attorney. He is at the top of the mountain professionally, and is wondering if the climb is worth it. Clooney meets Zeta-Jones as she is divorcing her husband who is caught in the act. Not the act you are thinking, but a plus for train lovers. Zeta-Jones has the always great Richard Jenkins as her lawyer, who is bested in court by Clooney.
The plot twists and turns as Clooney falls in love with the remarkably beautiful Zeta-Jones. This movie is always worth watching, a large cast of characters, and some incredibly funny lines. Julia Duffy, Geoffrey Rush, Cedric the Entertainer and many more have smaller roles, handled brilliantly.
The Scorpion King (2002)
Scorpion King-always worth a watch
Wow, I see this movie has been awash with negative reviews. Look, every movie isn't Citizen Kane. It's an excellent action/adventure/love story all mixed up in one. The Rock is really good in this role, entirely believable. This was his first big role, and he nailed it, which is why he's still starring in movies today. Kelly Hu is an unbelievably beautiful Scorceress who turns into Rock's love interest. Michael Clark Duncan doesn't do his best work here, but it's good enough. The rest of the cast isn't that great, but the movie is really about the Rock and Hu anyways. Great sets, it looks completely authentic and the movie is shot beautifully. There is a reason this gets played a lot on USA, it gets ratings. It gets ratings because it's good entertainment, and shows the Rock on his way to mega stardom. Too bad Kelly Hu hasn't had a chance at a similar vehicle, she's well worth it.
Logan's Run (1976)
Still worth the watch 30 years later
This movie, though a product of it's time, the glorious 70's, has staying power. Sure, special effects have advanced greatly, and a remake would be much more visually believable, you have a feeling that the entire movie is shot in a mall while inside the 'City'. But get past that, and watch the film. The acting, with Peter Ustinov, Michael York and Richard Jordan carrying the entire film mostly, is extremely well done. Jenny Agutter is young and cute in the film, which is about all her character requires. It's an interesting statement of a society that gets a little out of hand with it's youth worship, holding up a mirror to our own. It's especially poignant if you saw it yourself when you were under 30, and see it again at a 'maturer' age. Farrah Fawcett has a brief role here, and Agutter has a nice brief nude scene. The scenes of Washington DC are memorable even by today's technology standards.
The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
A rarity, a re-make far superior to the original
If you have a chance, make sure you see this film. It's an excellent re-make, Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan give Academy Award caliber performances. In an unusual tribute to the original, Faye Dunaway is cast as Brosnan's psychologist with whom he discusses his disillusionment with life and love. Even the normally annoying Denis Leary gives a good performance as the embittered detective who watches Russo's struggles between her heart and her job. Frankie Faison has an excellent supporting role(most may remember him as the landlord in Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America"). The film is dazzlingly shot, the yacht racing sequences are really beautiful. And above all, it's an intense love story that won't leave you disappointed. Very steamy scenes between the two make this a date movie, not a movie you watch with your kids!
Accepted (2006)
Rejected? Not quite.
This was clearly an idea movie that didn't get thought out enough. Not to give away the entire movie concept, but Bartleby doesn't get into any school, so he makes one up to fool his dad. It's too hard to suspend disbelief in this movie, because too much of it is just too unbelievable. It actually has some very good acting in it from Justin Long, who has been a favorite of mine since 'Galaxy Quest', and who really got his break in 'Dodgeball'. It actually made some very sophisticated points about what is the idea behind higher education anyway. Had he not made up the school, but rather found a school like this, I think it could have been a much better movie. And the South Harmon Institute of Technology acronym's was run into the ground. Had some funny moments, and was worth a NetFlix's rental, but that's about it.
The Song Remains the Same (1976)
Worst movie of all time?
One of the few movies I have ever walked out on. If endless scenes at a coffee shop are your idea of great cinema, this movie is for you. I loved Led Zeppelin, and couldn't imagine why this movie didn't ever get talked about until I saw it myself. For you 70's romanticists, here's something about the 70's that is beyond bad. Are you hoping for some good ad libbed dialog, a new insight into one of the greatest rock bands of all time? Don't get your hopes up, unless you've been waiting your entire life to know how much sugar Robert Plant takes in his tea. The concert footage is bad, and even the audio, the one thing you would think they couldn't screw up in this movie, is dreadful. This movie should be avoided at all costs.
EuroTrip (2004)
Eurotrip, worth the watch
This movie contains a lot of good humor in it. Hot babes, typical goofy kid movie but pretty well done. It's running on the movie channels constantly right now and is always worth logging a little time with it. The scene of Cooper in the hot tub with the babe is gratuitous, but it's GOOD gratuitous. The song 'Scotty doesn't know' is really part of the best part of this movie too, with the group Lustra actually making it into the movie behind Matt Damon in his cameo as a singer of the song. The pope scenes, also gratuitous, are also extremely well done. If you like seeing hot babes, boobs and making out, this is your kind of movie. Seeing a bunch of fat naked guys at the nude beach was by far the worst visual of the movie, but it was funny too.
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Duderific
Highly entertaining the first 100 times I saw it, now not so much. The 'and then' segment at the drive thru entered my homes dialect and has not left yet. Hot chicks are sprinkled thru the movie, as well as the very disturbing she-male stripper. This movie is often thought of as the epitome of bad, but really it's funny enough. Is it formulaic? Sure. Is Ashton Kutcher a total tool? Kinda looks so. Seann William Scott is the funnier of the two by far. Great cameo appearance of Brent Spiner (knows as DATA on Star Trek Next Generation). The bubble wrap jumpsuits are also highly entertaining and original. I thought there was going to be a sequel to this, but it evidently fell thru.
Mr. Baseball (1992)
A great movie!
This is an excellent, little known movie. Tom Selleck does an outstanding job of acting in this movie, with the Japanese 'Clint Eastwood'. I'd love to see if this movie has come out on DVD yet, there are some spots that clearly have been cut. Hiroku (Tom's love interest) has clearly had some parts chopped. It would be interesting to see more of Japan in the film. The baseball sequences are far and away the most realistic of any baseball movie, I'm quite sure most of the actors were current or former baseball players. I love loading the tape of this movie at least once a year. Best scenes involve the lack of hat tipping after Tom gets beaned in the big game, and an intensely sensual scene of Tom having a hot bath with Hiroku. Dennis Haysbert also does a great job, it's good to see he's finally getting some recognition, not just in baseball movies(he was also in Major League).
The Glitter Dome (1984)
How could this happen?
This was a great book, and the casting(except Margot Kidder) seems pretty good. What in the heck happened? I would guess this was Stuart Margolin's first and last directing job. To think that John Lithgow actually had to go thru with this makes you appreciate him all the more. Clearly he got his over-acting out of his system with this woofer. Joe Wambaugh should get this film re-done by someone competent, it'd be an academy award winner. I'd like to see that movie, avoid this one at all costs, unless you are a fan of the morbidly unwatchable. And if you are a fan of that, watch a Bush speech instead. Bigger laughs, and bigger tears.
