Ant-Man (2015)
I believe I can fly... with Ant-Man
The new Marvel's Ant-Man is a blow of fresh wind in this hot summer of mega block-busters. I went to see the movie without much expectation but what the movie did was incredible.
First of all, the story. It tells the classic, ordinary man-to-hero story, as do all the Marvel and DC movies. However, the way this movie, or rather its actors tell the story is what sets this movie apart from others. There is plenty of jokes, comedy and things that sound simply wrong (in that comical way) in this movie. The progress of the story is satisfactory and you can clearly differentiate the protagonist at the beginning from the protagonist at the end of the movie. Not just that, some of the supporting characters receive their five minutes of glory as well and they develop wonderfully.
As mentioned before, actors did their jobs brilliantly. Rudd delivers his performance as a con-man and a comedian quite well (albeit not as flawlessly as Pena) and his "nemesis" Stoll is perfect as the antagonist Yellowjacket. Lilly has done an awesome job as a supporting character and Douglas, well there's nothing to say about his performance that hasn't already been said. Oh and let's not forget the appearance of our tie-ins, the Falcon (Mackie) and our girl Carter (yay, Hayley Atwell!) who delivered their parts solidly as well.
All in all, the movie is something you'll either love or hate (just like the rest of MCU) but might as well be something that'll entertain you for the duration of 117 min. I find the movie to be sticking out of the overly dark lot that the Avengers (and Ironman and Thor and... well just about every Marvel movie I've gotten used to these days) have become. Much like what Guardians of the Galaxy did when they entered the stage, this movie has repeated with its fresh tone, fresh cast and "fresh" (the concept is fresh, the premise not so much) story . You've definitely got my recommendation to watch it.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Awesome Looking Movie
Jupiter Ascending is one visually stunning movie and not at all disappointing, considering how many bad reviews it has received. Basically, the movie revolves around Jupiter Jones, a human girl, born on Earth which is a small part in a bigger plot of one of ruling families in the universe. Jupiter is, through her genetic legacy, an heir to the aforementioned family and has to protect herself, as well as her planet, from other members of this family. The movie sports a huge variety of space travel and planets, all of which were amazingly done. All worlds, as well as their residents were depicted perfectly. Even more so, that you would feel, as if you were right there. The music was also unique and pleasant and fits perfectly to each scene. Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum have both portrayed their roles of Jupiter Jones and Caine Wise respectively quite good, even though there is a lot more space to improve on. Unlike them, Eddie Redmayne portrayed his role of a royal antagonist and a snob perfectly. The other actors I won't comment on because their roles and acting didn't really show that much in the movie. And that brings me to negative aspects of this movie. The story, although impressive and intriguing, lacks its ending and character development. There is much more ground for this story to build on but the movie left it somehow unfinished and that may be one of the main reasons why the movie wasn't so well accepted by the audience so far. Considering the Wachowskis are notorious for having good but long stories, the ending doesn't surprise me. All in all, a neat jewel for your eyes, if that is what defines your good movie but if you don't have a good imagination or like a more insightful story, then this is definitely not a movie for you.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Disney Going Hero
Big Hero 6 is another in a line of many successful Disney animated movies. And rightly so, might I add. The movie is about a boy, Hiro, his friends, Nerds and a health care prototype robot, Baymax. They live in a not so distant, technologically advanced future in a city called San Fransokyo. The story is action-packed comedy with dramatic elements to it and, as such, is appropriate for all ages. If you love Marvel movies, you will most definitely like this one as well. If you are more akin to beautiful landscapes and animated design, then by all means, this is the movie you will want to watch. If you are feeling down, the abundance of comedy, present in this movie is sure to make your day up. There is also a lot to learn from this movie, as some of the most important things (as well as most painful) in our lives, are depicted in this movie. Plus, the movie features one quite notorious figure (without too many spoilers). In short, the movie is a must see for children and for grown-ups as well, if they have a child lurking somewhere within them. Do not make a mistake and pass on a beauty of this movie.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
Fairy Land in Real World
Once Upon a Time is an excellent show with a gripping plot and very good cast. The story revolves around Emma Swan, a woman with troubled past, that winds up in Storybrooke, Maine, after Henry, her son that she gave away at birth, comes looking for her. After that it is all magic, as we follow her on her adventures in a town where characters from fairy tales do not remember their lives. The series is well done, with balance between the world of fairy tales and the real world, in series called the Land Without Magic. Fairy tales are not told from the beginning but explore what happened after the supposed happy ending the each story has and that is what has drawn me to this series. Another thing about this series is its characters. Their stories are full of surprises and none of characters are what they seem to be at the beginning. It makes people feel that world is not based on Good-Evil division but that all people wield both in their hearts. My favorite is the story of the Evil Queen/Regina Mills. All in all, excellent work. The show is interesting and I recommend you to watch it.
