Kings (2017)
A Failure with good intentions!
Deniz Gamze Ergüven has tried to tackle the issue of racism and the 1992 L.A riots surrounding Rodney King's incident and did not fully succeed which is kind of expected from a director who's not American and turkish and has zero on-scene familiarity with the unhinged racism against African-Americans and that turbulent time.
She has tried to somehow outdo Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit but this isn't even near that.
Though one can't really ignore the amazing performances by Halle Berry and Daniel Craig, It's not enough to save this garbled drama !
Deniz Gamze Ergüven's intentions are good but perhaps If the film was written by an American writer (Like Detroit that is written by American journalist, Mark Boal and directed by Bigelow), it would've turned "good" as well. However Erguven's Mustang which is turkish drama is a strong one and she should probably stick to depicting her own country's everyday/historical struggles (Turkey) which are not a few!
The Girl Who Invented Kissing (2017)
An realistic story of unlikely friendship
It's not everyday that you see a pretty Victoria Secret model like Suki Waterhouse (Who plays a druggy drifter with no name) falls for a slightly peculiar middle-age in the streets and becomes his best friend while being stalked though it happens in this 105 minutes debut film of Tom Sierchio . Although the movie depicts a real unlikely story in its plot, It sort of succeeds to portray some genuine feelings of fallible people. "The Girl Who Invented Kissing" is infused with zero wrenching pathos and is stymied by a monotonous script. While It's unfair to ignore the noticeable performances by Vincent Piazza and Dash Mihok, it's also fair to say that Suki Waterhouse is a long way to claim that she's as good in movies as she's in catwalk. Finishing my short take, I'll say that "The Girl Who Invented Kissing" actually does not even innovate let alone invent anything but it's a movie worth putting time for, specially for those who like to commiserate with these imperfect people of the story....and specially a pill-popping drifter played by pretty Suki Waterhouse.
Smartass (2017)
No so Smartass!
The whole movie is chaotic. It follows the story of a 15years old who is so spoiled and bored of her life that decides to hop on a journey to find some adventure and she is accompanied by her junkie friends trying to sell coke and the movie is kinda based on drugs & gangs. Joey King does a good job playing Freddie which is inspired by Writer-Director's life (Jena Serbu) . You may even feel for Freddie through her dark unsafe journey when she shed some tears and say "I'm just too tired to be murdered!"
Anyway "Smartass" ain't a good word to describe the 15years old protagonist of the movie or the movie itself .It Sends some bad messages to young people out there to follow what she did. So if you really have nothing better to do and you're really bored and into these type of fast-paced absurd comedies and wanna have some fun, instead of doing what Freddie (main character) did, just watch some movies. Smartass is one!
Circus Kane (2017)
A Bloody Satisfying Horror
I just watched the movie because I'm really into clown-based horror movies like It. "Circus Kane" is a bloody horror about a group of teenagers invited to a game to gain 250Ks. I really enjoyed the bloody atmosphere of the movie . Definitely a lot of effort was put into making the decoration of that house . the performances are acceptable considering the amateur cast . it's actually hard to get believable performances from an amateur young cast for an horror movie like this but Christopher Ray made it happen . I counted. There were about 1000 subtitle lines (dialogues) which is a bit too much for an 88min horror movie but the script was well written and dialogues makes you think twice . the end was a bit downer . there was no need to make that unnecessary twist in the end but overall Circus Kane is definitely a bloody flick that worth watching in this famine of horror days.
