Somewhere in Queens (2022)
Difficult To Watch
Coming from a large family myself, I get the ups and downs of family portrayed in this movie. But the downs are just down right depressing and overall made this a difficult movie to watch and even enjoy. Appreciate everyone's efforts in portraying their characters and trying to tell a story but don't be fooled in thinking that both of the main roles are two that are well versed in comedy that this movie is a comedy. Misleading classification on this one for sure. Ray's character is just odd and difficult to like. Really wanted to like this movie, the trailer was funny - movie not so much. Didn't rate.
The More Love Grows (2023)
The dog salvaged this movie
Outside of the dog in this movie there really isn't much to like about it. The main story lines for the human characters are just too depressing that they really don't capture the viewer's attention or interests. So much so that you find yourself wondering if they would have just made this totally about the dog in a sort of Benji way - would that have made the movie more interesting for the viewer? Given the actor an actress in this movie and knowing their ability based on past performances I just couldn't get into this one at all and I wanted to. Should have been happy for the final outcome for the dog but the rest was hard to watch.
MacArthur (1977)
MacArthur!
Name just says it all. I watched this movie with my dad when it came out and having served in Korea he had great admiration for the man. The disappointing thing about this film is that it only concentrates on a short period of the man's life - interestingly enough the man's entire life would have made such an epic bio-pic that it is staggering to imagine the cost for production.
Some posters elude to the flawed characteristics about the man, which are cheap shots. The theme of the movie "Duty, Honor, Country" are not just mere words blathered from the lips of a high-brassed officer - it is the deep declaration of one man's total devotion to his country.
Ironically Peck being the liberal that he was garnered a better understanding of the man. He does a great job showing the fearless general tempered with the humane side of the man.
Home from the Hill (1960)
This is the best of its genre!
If you want lampooning small towns with big rich families with tons of troubles; then you need to be watching "The Long Hot Summer" or "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". If you want a good enthralling movie with strong character acting and a believable story line then this is the one for you. Having grown up in the South, especially in a small rural town I completely understand and can relate to this movie. It centers around what most of my generation had in our small towns, that one rich family who owned everything. Naturally this movie ratchets up the drama, so if you are not from this region you may think it unrealistic. Robert Mitchum is in one of his bests roles as the Cap'n. The troubles and trials of their marriage spill over into their son's life. Theron's youthful care free teenage life finally gives way to his budding adult manhood but somehow is related to the problems of his parents with a little of his own to throw in. I would recommend this movie to anyone, its a past gone era of life that I remember so well and well acted.
