Beyrouth après-rasage (2005)
poetic
i've read the movie as a metaphor of Beirut. how it lives with the souvenirs of its old sunny days. the characters are very authentic, the acting is simple, the idea is interesting: how a man lives his loneliness, between was is true and what is from his pure imagination. Julia Kassar is very impressive by her acting. not to forget to mention the rhythm and how the movie "plays" on 2 different level of time " the past and the present". it made the invisible become visible! by it simple 3 characters it gave an idea of the life in Beirut, the routine, the dreams, the future(s), the souvenir. hope that with this movie the Lebanese cinema will start to rise. the Lebanese cinema needs this kind of authentic movies.
Taif Al-Madina (2000)
a poetic absurd image of the war
comparing to other movies that dealt with the subject of the Lebanese war, this movie can seem poor cinematographic wise but on the other hand it has a very good description or if we might call it transcription of the reality. the movie also highlights the problem of the people who escaped from the south to the city of Beirut and who found themselves implicated in a war they know nothing about. in the Shadow of the City you can find all the absurdities that unfortunately are reality. and not to forget that Chamoun has put all the pain in a very poetic frame that made his work far from being a melodrama. very nice performance by Majdi Machmouchi.
Fairuz, we hielden zoveel van mekaar (2003)
a very romantic documentary
one of the most accomplished documentary made by a non Lebanese about Lebanon and Beirut. very lovely image of this scared city and about this diva who is a Lebanese national symbol. through the interviews we discover the emotions left in the mind of the Lebanese people after the civil war, which is still considered as a taboo. and not to forget about the montage and the songs in between scenes that really shows the platonic relation between the Lebanese public and the diva. this movie is recommended for everyone who never understood the reason that made Fairuz a national symbol. one of the most attentive documentaries about Lebanon.
