Et soudain, tout le monde me manque (2011)
Flat
Just so im not misunderstood...i love french films. We rented this after reading the storyline which we found to be really interesting. A dad trying to understand his daughter by bonding with her ex's. However, this was just a simple story that failed to become an interesting or complete movie. It's like the writer had a fine idea that was not developed in any way. Whole chunks of the story are left out, it just seemed to be a jumble of short scenes that do not build on each other whatsoever. We never fully understand any of the leads reasoning or reactions. We don't ever understand why they interact the way they do. There is no point to anything. Why did the dad never send the postcards? All those ex- boyfriends at the funeral...where the hell where they for the rest of the hour and a half? At the end Justine says that boxer-boy was the only one who didn't play golf with her dad...what does that MEAN???? Holes in the script and plot are filled with emotional outbursts and a few good jokes. Simply a mediocre, fluffy, wannabe hip drama-comedy.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Fast forward buttons were made for movies like this.
This movie isn't really all that bad. We fast forwarded it and it was GREAT! Like some type of techno-ethnic-experimental video-clip/science Powerpoint presentation! There is no difference when watching it this way. You wont miss anything important, you'll still get those memorable glimpses of all the dinosaurs, growing grass, star clusters etc, AND you also wont want to slam your head into a wall or harm anyone close to you! Its a win-win situation! You cannot go wrong with this technique!
Seriosuly, we were really shocked that there was a movie out there starring Pitt & Penn, that we had not seen or even heard of! Now we know why. Warn your family and friends before its too late!
The Little Traitor (2007)
Shallow, poor script, bad acting
I do not understand how this movie has the same score as "Politiki Kouzina" and "Vitus" which both have children acting the lead role!? You cannot even compare the quality of acting, directing, script, ANYTHING!
I'm sure that it is terribly difficult to find children that can act, but the little boy playing Profi, has such a flat, expressionless tone, voice and face that it was impossible to believe he feels anything for Sargeant Dunlop. Since all the story revolves around this young boy, make it worth it!
The plot is so fast that no scenes are given enough time to develop. Since this story is based on a book, I'm sure there was plenty of material to work with! But i do not know where it all went!?
When the hell did did they become friends, and have enough time to develop such a strong bond that Dunlop would turn up for such an "emotional" reunion 30 years later! For goodness sake! The evolution of a real friendship, which is the central concept (combined with a few historical references) is much harder than what is shown.
Sorry to say but this is such a shallow movie. Poor Alfred Molina is wasted really because the script is just so poor.
I understand that this is a patriotic Israelian movie but the worst thing is that it is also trying SO hard to be a "deep" movie. NO NO NO!!! There have been so many movies about the plight of the Jews, that it is a difficult subject to tackle, especially after masterpieces like "La Vita e Bella" where every single moment is breathtaking.
Incidentally the movie has the same score as American Pie. I understand that...its of the same depth. But with American Pie we were laughing WITH the actors and not AT their acting abilities.
