Bluey (2018)
Bloody brilliant
I was so stoked to see that the reviews of Bluey on here were on par with my own opinion. This is a relatively new show and I hope it continues for years to come because it really is the best. I am thrilled to see a show about what it's really like to be a kid in Australia while still incorporating little lessons and morals into it. First kids show I've ever given 10 stars. Can't fault it.
Heidi (2015)
A beautiful show
I can not fault this show. It's a beautiful story that adults can enjoy too. It's a nice change from the over-the-top shows that are on TV for kids these days. It teaches values and kindness and also encourages adventure and curiosity. It has a nice, calming quality that is great for just before naps too.
Second Act (2018)
Another predictable story line
This wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen but it wasn't worth seeing at the cinema. Another typical movie about a girl who isn't expected to go far because she doesn't have a college degree but actually knows her stuff so ends up doing well despite having lied about something to get the job.
Of course there's someone who finds out and intends to rat her out but she comes clean on a big stage in front of everyone which I believe we're meant to find moving but I think it's actually quite inconsiderate. Besides, it has been done a hundred times in rom coms.
The funny parts are few and far between and the "twist" is a bit predictable. I wasn't expecting to have my mind blown by this movie but I was at least hoping for an easy, funny, light hearted comedy to switch off to and enjoy. This was not that.
Heathers (2018)
Fantastic
First of all, we have to remember that this is spin off of an 80's film; a film that was made before the mass shootings and school bombings. This show is not glorifying suicide or mass murder, it is a remake of a movie that was so deep and made so many good points that it needed to be recreated in a modern context.
Of course it needed to be different. If you've seen the movie, why would you want to watch a TV show that is exactly the same? And if you haven't seen the movie, the clever alterations to the story line are going to go unnoticed.
I give this show 9 stars because of the relatively similar story line with differences that worked. It's funny, shocking, deep and twisted. The cinematography was also fantastic and beautiful.
Crazy how 30 years on, the original points made in the movie are still so relevant.
Sing (2016)
Great family movie
The detail in the graphics, the imagination and music all make this movie fantastic. I've watched it a few times and it's the only movie I've witnessed my 2 year old watch from beginning to end.
Shameless: You Sold Me the Laundromat, Remember? (2016)
Annndd best actress goes to Emmy Rossum!
The scene in the laundromat where Fiona is exhausted physically and emotionally so she laughs herself into hysterical crying. Amazing. Emmy Rossum is an amazing actress but that scene was extraordinary.
Charmed (2018)
Tries too hard
Firstly, I didn't expect to like this show because nothing can replace the sentimental value the original show holds in my heart, however, I watched it with fresh eyes prepared for a new show with a new cast and a new take on the magic.
But it is so bad.
The writers have tried SO hard to be inclusive of so many minority groups that it is obvious and seems desperate. It is very "in your face" with the feminist, gay, ethnic cast to the point where it just made me cringe.
It is unlike the carefree 90's version in so many respects, and the acting is actually worse.
I gave it 3 stars purely because the effects were much more realistic than the original.
Lame, corny and disappointing.
Soupçons (2004)
A great documentary
Regardless of whether you believe Michael Peterson is innocent or guilty of the crime he is accused of, this documentary is extremely well done and appropriately portrays the twisted justice system, how evidence can easily be fabricated or misinterpreted, and how members of the jury and the public, are incapable of "unhearing" things that have been said in the courtroom. The influence of the media - the bias the individual reporters have and the way they choose to relay the information they receive - heavily impacts the way the public view the alleged crime, and in this day in age, people cannot easily escape the media's coverage of such incidents. I found myself on the fence about Peterson's innocence right up until the last couple of episodes. Something Peterson's attorney (David Rudolf) said has resonated with me, and I believe it will for a long time, "Absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence". This documentary will forever change the way I view crimes portrayed by the media, and what it means to plead "guilty".
