if you've read the book, don't watch it, if you didn't read, don't watch it anyway
13 May 2006
It's a terrible film. It's as boring as can be, I have no words, i almost have no words. If you're not a Russian spectator, then it may be OK with you but any of us who knows soviet or Russian actors can notice their absence in this adaptation - except of Oleg Menschikov. It seems that such cast was intended, to avoid rivals who could steal a scene ,or i don't know - anyway ,it seems strange. These second-plan characters are so very neutral and faceless, and they all play as if they have no inspiration and wish and even weren't promised money. The book's characters are all bright and memorable, but here it seems that only Bender deserves attention - and Menschikov plays him so feebly, at least I imagined Ostap Bender to be absolutely different. He plays carelessly and lazily, which is a shame. He promised not to play in bad movies, which can make you think that "Zolotoy telenok" is good - but it's awful, really awful.

Real feelings
6 March 2005
Did you ever notice that most - or all - of the films telling us about courage and honor, and devotion , and kindness, are about the past? Or maybe these are coincidences.. This is a very good film, tragic and sad, about people with clear hearts and Can you believe in a woman who's waiting for someone she never knew well, met him only several times - but knew that something were between them that will never let her forget him - believe in her waiting for him for years? All the letters she wrote , they were for him and for herself , to help her hold on and to not lose faith. And can you believe in a man who tries to get to her to her for only one day, or maybe less, and the day which may never really come? And the way the story ended is the only one possible. Inman could kill the man who shot him in he end, even without talking to him ,and Ada could give up, find herself someone else or merely get insane, but they two have met - through the horror of war , despite people's meanness - they've met and had the happiest moments in their lives, those moments which never last forever.

great!!
5 March 2005
It's a crying marasmus!!! It's nonsense! It's marvelous! Yeah i'm telling you. Have no idea how would people react on a film of this kind to appear in 1939 , i'm f bit too young to remember this, but such stylization nowadays is a gem. The image, and the sound, and the plot (saving the world ,as usual, and a love line all the way through - nothing new , to put mildly)? and the characters! To me , Sky Captain is a pompous mug always trapping in silly situations - it must be a parody on the old-time movie heroes, at least i feel it is, and Polly is way too smart as well , so the only sane person there is Dex and if i were Polly, i'd prefer him at the end (but, certainly , would cling to Joe while the plot is going on , so is the nature of women:)) Great! Jude is a brilliant comedian , now i know this(curious , are some of sky Capnain's features - his own? %)) OK, no more on personal subject... in brief - watch this and you'll enjoy what you see!

rock it!
2 March 2005
I read somewhere that John Waters hates rock'n'roll, but of course this film gives just opposite thoughts. Exaggeration and idealism, and total madness. Of course the characters are far from beauty standards and thus remind real people, of course some of them can be found unbearably irritating, of course everything going on is grotesque but nevertheless the film is really charming. The songs are just great, the plot is silly, with an obvious happy end, everybody are happy, and i want to get to the fifties immediately because i was born too late and have a very vague idea about this time - based mainly on films like this one... Why do they film all this?:))

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
scary scary story
2 March 2005
Johnny Depp verily is a great actor - i think he would be just as brilliant in silent cinema, for his face and especially eyes can express any emotion. And he is a remarkable comedian. I love the way he looks in this film, and i adore the image of it in general, cold and gloomy, an excellent atmosphere for something scary to be happening all the time. So it does , but the story once frightening gets a bit grotesque and full of hilarious moments. Depp's play is just flawless, his somewhat crazy character is adorable, Christina Ricci looks amazing with blonde hair, and also i love the inimitable Christopher Walken whose character here is merely ridiculous... ooh, ten lines, finally. Even eleven.

Arizona Dream (1993)

beautiful
2 March 2005
They say that "Arizona Dream" is Kusturica's best work because it is American, well, it's not that American despite it was filmed there and probably is about the American dream, it is just a story of people's lives, like in all Kusturica's films, and it's just a great work of a great film director, not depending on geographical factors. The characters aren't sexy lady journalists or successful businessmen , they are those who we call usual people - but no one in the world is usual for we aren't made at a factory, and daily routine is much more interesting, and much more humane then any sci-fi-hi-tech-futuristic stuff. all the characters are a bit crazy and so is everything around. There's some magic in there , and something tragic, and everyone's little private dreams, useless and sweet , and relations between people which seem to be one thing but are absolutely another, though the people tied by them may never notice them or never admit, and love all the way through.

golden years
2 March 2005
Once i used to be a mad Bowie fan, and, as most of them do, i tried to obtain everything related to this man.

And there was a film having David in his best, and all way long ,and with a sci-fi plot! I was on seventh heaven, and expected to get higher when i buy it. Finding the film was hard , because it was quite old and - as it turned out later when i finally got it - certainly not a memorable one. To be sincere, it is long, obscure, plot less and boring. Forgive me all Bowie fans. I've read many reviews on it before i watched it by myself , and one of them said something like "an alien buys the whole earth and sets fascism all over it". OK, maybe that really was this way and i just haven't caught the story line. But something makes me think that the film is just a pump. You couldn't retell the plot of it , not to mention finding its idea, even after seeing it hundred times. The best here is music , and certainly sometimes naked David. In those times he was a real junkie and looked awfully beautiful ,and recorded his best - IMHO - albums. But he's a bad actor. In some interview i read him say that after "The man..." he was with invitations to play an alien , sent from different directors and producers, but he rejected all the offers , which , no doubt , was very smart of him.

Big Fish (2003)

so nice
2 March 2005
December 28th, when i passed my psychology exam, i immediately went to our bookshop to celebrate the event , that's my odd nature - and i saw the book called Big Fish there. It was thin and thus cheap so i bought it , went outside and started reading. I was charmed by the way it was written, the style reminded me of American folklore (actually that was a Russian translation, and a book of American folklore i had was also on Russian , so, maybe ,it is only a wrong impression) , and the story was so unusual , and so unusually told , and i loved it.

On the back cover of the book it was said that Tim Burton have filmed it not long ago, so the only thing to do was buy the film immediately. Often , when you read a book and image the characters and events quite well, a film based on this book becomes a disappointment for you .But this was not the case. The film is excellent. Doctors call it schizophrenia or something like that ,when your imagination becomes real and surrounds you , but what to do if it's not just an imagination? You can't tell reality and fantasy apart only because they are the same.If something you face ain't alright with you, think it up the way you like it more.

Beetlejuice (1988)

love this!
2 March 2005
Michael Keaton is a great ,but sadly , underrated actor ,as his fans always say - everyone's fans say things like this. Alright. First i saw Keaton in "The Dream Team", a really great film , and this psycho image stuck in my mind. Once i watched the Beetlejuice cartoons, and found they were based on a film, and when it turned out that the film had Keaton as a main character , i felt it couldn't be bad! And of course it wasn't. It is madly funny and sometimes a bit idiotic, casting is great - such roles suit Keaton much more than for instance Batman (yes , i really don't like Batman , but don't blame me cause this review ain't about it :)) - and decoration and design is incredible.

no , no , no!
2 March 2005
I like the idea. I like Tom Conti, and even David Bowie. But if David Bowie looks here a patriot, then the Sun is turning around the Earth. See, his ever-arrogant face expressions badly spoils the picture! And he is a bad actor! A biographical film about David said that in this picture he gives one of his best performances, and there are some allusions on his real life.

Undoubtedly , we expect something groundbreaking . But something's wrong .Some reviews say, the main flaw of this film is too much aesthetes and also the difference between Western and Eastern cultures, but i'm afraid it ain't so, the flaw is David's play.

do you recognize?
2 March 2005
Here's a story of a man we call a white crow but only a bit exaggerrated. A sad fairytale which looks like a real life too much - i'm sure you've met an Edvard Scissorhands in your life , not once , and even maybe you are him. People tend to judge each other by looks and are ready to use someone kind and naive, and irritation about soething unsubstantial easily takes over, and we often recognize a true love only when it's too late ,and there's nothing we can do, and it's alright. I think this film is one of Burton's best works - for me it's much better than Batman , i'm sorry , because it's way closer to reality.

dream on
2 March 2005
To me, there's an eternal problem in psychology - doctors try to take our illusions away from us instead of trying to see what's there inside. Well, maybe some act just the opposite way , and then both sides feel much better. What's there so bad in an illusion when you do nobody no harm , maybe only you make someone hiccup with laughter at the sight of your pink glasses? Is it really necessary to return to reality where there's so much disappointment? Just watch this movie if you never did, and let your dreams dance. Maybe the plot or some episodes are weak, or too sweet, but these qualities aren't the worst of possible.

OK , i love this!
2 March 2005
I've just seen it and all that i can say this film is just as nice! Recently i took a part in a staging of it in my university ,that was my first acquaintance with the play... So when i learnt about the existence of the film, i decided to go and buy it - and wasn't disappointed , even more - the film is really amazing! I couldn't help laughing all way long and so did my mother - which is quite rare actually... Actors do their best (as an Everett's fan i doubt i could say something else anyway:)) and of course the serenade is so charming ! Excellent! And sorry the numerous tautologies, i needed this review to be no less than ten lines, but had mainly ineffable emotions...
