Incir Reçeli (2011)
one of the best Turkish movies
I watched this movie for about 4 times. At the final scene of each end, i cannot keep myself crying. This is because of the male main actor; he cries very real.
Throughout the movie, there are some striking phrases that make the movie interesting and somehow deep. It focuses on love while the focus on the loneliness of people with AIDS is also there. The movie is informative on the possible causes of the disease and gives a strong input and insight to the relevant physicians. For example; you cannot know if a taxi driver suddenly opens the window. This phrase mean nothing to many of us. But for those with AIDS, this may cause them to get flu and die because of this flu.
The misunderstanding, regrets, collapse, recovery, love without sex, common memories, views of Istanbul.. everything was nice. It also reminded me of my university years in Ankara and Istanbul.
This movie is a must see movie that clearly shows the real lives of many people in the relatively developed parts of my country. I also liked the second movie but the love in this movie was so strong that I could not feel the same with the other movie.
Desert Flower (2009)
Be Sensitive and Watch It!
Movie is about circumcision of 3 year old Waris, her escape from Somalia, and her way to be a top model. The main actress surprisingly looks very similar to the real Waris Dirie and the casting was generally very satisfying. The scenes of 3-year old girls's circumcision were disturbing and sad but necessary. I watched the movie as a biography of Waris Dirie but it wasn't. The message given throughout the movie was deeper than the life of a Somalian girl.
I cut two points because there were some missing points. For example; this sad girl did almost nothing that really helped her during her way to be a top model: her roommate and the reception lady. The turning point to be a model was indeed her meeting with her roommate and her acceptance to the hostel. The day she changed her life was the day when her roommate told Waris that he is a famous photographer. The fashion agency lady was weak and looked like a fake Miranda Priestly. This is my opinion of course but it disturbed me because that strong fashion character already processed by Meryl Streep successfully and I didn't like to see a fake Miranda. Anyways, I liked the movie in general and it wasn't boring at all. What I liked most was they never used an expression as if this is a Muslim tradition. This is not and this cruel and pervert practice cannot be any religious in any way. I wish this movie attracted more attention to the Waris Dirie foundation and treated as Silver Linings.
Belle (2013)
An epic poet on honesty
Despite weak performances of the lead characters I really liked the movie especially in terms of costume, setting, music, and casting. However, I think we should be informed more on many things in the movie. For example: The studies of Dido on the case. Suddenly, she goes into his uncle's room and finds the maps and takes them. During this period, it seems her uncle doesn't recognize anything. Secondly, we don't know whether those documents were kept by her lover or not. Thirdly, her cousin sees her and waits until Dido tells about it but Dido doesn't tell and she asks. In that scene, Dido could inform us about her feelings, at least a bit. But nothing! In the end, which is very expected, she screams her love. Somehow we know it from the beginning that they would be lovers; perhaps because of this, the director didn't place any lines in the script on love. Lastly, the film was nice and good but if you want to understand the slavery conditions you should see "Amazing Grace".
Queen (2013)
Surprises you with great acting skills
As many others, I am not a fan of Indian dances. There is some usual hand and neck movements and they dance altogether in quite unrelated situations. People suddenly start dancing and that dance goes on, goes on.. For the first time, the dances in this movie did not disturb me at all. Moreover, I really liked them since the gang refer them in Amsterdam in a very funny way.
The movie was meaningful to me perhaps because I had a very similar experience. There are two things I will never forget about the movie and I will absolutely watch this movie again. First one is the very beginning days of the travel. She is afraid of everything and she cannot even pass the street :). This was very very natural scene and I really appreciated the leading actress. Second was the Italian restaurant owner. In my own experience, I asked for ketchup in Italy in a pizza restaurant and the waiter stood behind me and told me "sure?" for a couple of times and they did not bring me ketchup. Later I found out it was an insult to their meal. She gave the first kiss to this Italian cook. I was expecting more from that relationship but it didn't happen. Nice. It surprised me.
What I loved at most was the friendship in Amsterdam. I also experienced it. Yes, that happens almost the same way. Amsterdam is a city with a big emphasis on sex industry. Somehow, you can develop nice friendships there. The movie gave me that taste and I felt I was there again.
Watch the movie without any prejudices. Do not hesitate to watch it. I wasn't in the mood of watching an Indian film but when I started, the movie took me to itself in a couple of minutes. I loved almost everything in the movie.
Les Misérables (2012)
An overrated movie
Normally I do not prefer writing negative critics about a movie. However, this time, after spending almost 3 hours I could not keep myself from writing a couple of words about the movie.
First of all, no one should start watching it with a great expectation. Given the fantastic novel, one may consider that the movie would be breath-taking with some famous and respected Hollywood stars. But the movie is too far from being breath-taking. I only liked facial acts of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe while I found Anne Hathaway's facial acts "unnatural."
I love musicals, I love them a lot. But for God's sake, what was that music? Throughout the movie, I could hear good sound for only 3 or 4 times! The remaining was just repetition while the repetitions were with poor quality. Anne Hathaway rescued the musical part only with one song of Elaine Page. She really gave emotions and we could hardly learn a bit about her character. To me, almost all musical parts were forced. Take Moulin Rouge for example. There are many conversations in it and you don't feel weird while watching. Most of the songs in that movie were unique. On the other hand, this movie made me feel that they wanted to make a musical and they just composed some cliché sounds to rescue the day! I never liked the music and at some point, it disturbed me.
I gave 4 for the sake of some rare good features. This is absolutely not a movie that I will keep in my movie DVD archive.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
musical dram
The scenes that affected me at most were the Roxanne dance scene and the last 10 minutes. I did liked the costumes as well. Music was original and high quality.
Actually, I am quite used to dramatic or highly emotional scenes in love movies however the last scene was perfectly effective and made me cry. I did not like male main actor and the Duke in terms of their acting. Nicole Kidman was amazing and it is hard to believe that she has broken ribs etc and is on wheelchair in many of the scenes. I believe that this movie will be very meaningful to those who currently fell in love and bears to take any risks to maintain their love.
Ivanovo detstvo (1962)
Tarkovski pattern
Last weekend, I watched 5 movies of Tarkovski based on the advice of a close and highly intellectual friend. I understood that most of the Hollywood war movies got inspirations from this movie. I recognized that actors looked at the camera directly for a couple of times but it did not disturb me much. i admired the child actor, he has given both the adult soldier role and a simple child role very perfectly. In this movie, the women actor had too much act. I mean, this is something I recognized in almost all movies of Tarkovski movies I watched so far: The selected female actors have overdone their roles in showing their emotions. I cannot say all actors were very natural and professional. I liked the movie anyway. the last scene was very touchy.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
bipolar disorder reality
When I read comments, I can clearly see that those who left negative messages do not know anything about this illness and bipolar sufferers. Acts of the main characters were realistic and movie touched the exact points in this illness. Having a long relationship with a bipolar sufferer, I know the meaning of obsession and "rising". even the intense effort for being fit was such familiar to me. With this movie, I realized that we all experience the very same feeling and problems when we have the same disorders. It is normal that there were too much shouting at the beginning and especially midnight conversations. Movie does not mention or show the destroying depressive sessions of the illness, except this this is a "must see" movie.
