The Lie (2018)
9/10
Gripping piece of cinema!
9 October 2020
The low rating in this one almost had me skip past it. But who am I kidding, I rarely pass up on a Blumhouse production. I'm so glad I ignored the reviews!! From beginning to end, this was an absolutely gripping psychological thriller. Not your usual Blumhouse film. It's certainly not a horror, I so wish streaming services would get the genres right - it happens all the time with these two genres in particular.

I was waiting for a terrible ending, something to make me understand the low average rating - but nope! I will not say anything to spoil it... just that they absolutely nailed this one. This is the kind of film that will leave you breathless. And of course have you questioning..

How far would you go protect the ones you love?

Joey King is ridiculously good. I cringed over her until I watched her portray Gypsy Rose a year ago. Her character in The Lie is another exceptional role for her - I don't see many more rom coms and chick flicks for her in the future. She is made for gripping dramas.

The parents were also portrayed fantastically- especially the mother! She was expertly styled to look as if she was deteriorating as the stress grew. It's the little quirks like that that really helped make this film stand out. Bravo Amazon and Blumhouse!!

ending ruined the entire experience
22 October 2019
This was going to be a 8-9. The story was gripping, and the actor playing Jacob could make you forgive some of the questionable acting by fellow stars. He was brilliant. So of course, was Abbie Cornish - as always. "Finally!" I screamed. "A good channel seven show! A great Australian series that's been made for tv!" I told all my friends and family... Now I feel, really, really bad for wasting their time. Because that ending..... No spoilers, just a warning. For a suspense series based on finding out the conclusion/what happens, that was shockingly stupid. It seems like someone had given the writer 2 minutes to scribble something down before a bomb went off. Can you refund six hours of your life? Because I would very much like too.

The Choice (I) (2016)
5/10
Nicholas Sparks most disappointing film.
5 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched all and read most of his stories, I consider myself a big Nicholas Sparks fan. Give me cheese ball romance any day of the week!

I've never been disappointed in his book to film adaptations! Opening day, I was ready and excited to watch Gabby and Travis' cinematic love story after not being able to put the book down.

Well somebody (or everybody) slaughtered this film. Theresa Palmer lacked.. Everything. Her acting was awful 80% of the time.. While I feel like I warmed to Benjamin Walker as Travis.. I think it's only because I had already loved him from the novel.. The actors had no chemistry.. Their relationship felt rushed and odd. The scene at the diner..... What was that??? I felt like Travis was almost being portrayed as dangerous.. Or a bit of a psycho.. Which he certainly isn't. The relationship with Travis & his father was another odd and confusing one - something Nicholas Sparks is usually great at. And all I could think about when Travis' sister was on screen was how bad her wig was...

The actual choice (which may I add is supposed to be the premise of the movie.. Hence the title.. "The Choice") is barely touched on. It's a pretty huge, deep and powerful aspect in the book but they brushed past it very quick.. Much like most of the movie.

I went to see this with my mother who has not read the book. She had no expectations.. Just the knowledge that she enjoyed every other Sparks movie. She hated it too. It had so much potential but something went very very wrong..

Wow. Stunning. Moving. Exceptional.

I can't comprehend how this movie has such a poor rating.. I checked it before I watched the film so I was not expecting much but giving it a crack; mainly because I love Claudia Karven.. Now I'm one to check my phone throughout a film, especially for the first 30 or so minutes but this film had me 100% focused from start to finish; a long with lump in my throat and a hand on my heart. I had to review it just so I could talk about it, because I'm sitting here absolutely touched by this film. I hope the actors are proud of it despite the reviews.. You can tell they put their everything in it and it showed by how quick I connected with each character.

I love Australian film and 33 Postcards reminds me why I have such a place for it in my heart.
