Cocaine Bear (2023)

Not great but big fun!
11 December 2023
This may not be a great movie, it doesn't even qualify as a good movie, but it's the most fun I've had in years! There's no character development, the gore looks very fake, and so does the computer animated bear. But it's set in the 1980s and that alone makes it worth watching. And the fact that this movie obviously doesn't take itself too seriously makes it a lot of fun to watch.

Kudos to Elizabeth Banks who directed it. She's always been a fun actress and that attitude of hers comes back in this movie. If you haven't seen it, go watch it! It will be a funny waste of your valuable time! Highly recommended for when you have nothing better to do.

Heartwarming and disturbing
10 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not to sneak up on anybody, I am a born again Christian but I also love great movies. Now most Christian movies rather suck, except this one. Sure, it's not the greatest production, it's even in 4:3 format. But the acting is great and the story is heartwarming. At the same time it gives you a look at some of the most disturbing parts of what Amsterdam is: drugs and (male) prostitution.

Another reviewer found the movie homo-erotic. I disagree. Sure, the guy is attractive, but what main actor isn't? If you start looking at movies that way, then almost every movie is homo-erotic. So stop talking such crap about this movie. It's not about that, it's about the story.

This story shows many sides of humanity. The young guy has no idea what hit him when he got to Amsterdam, so he quickly gets pulled into the criminal circuit. That is something real, these things happen in real life. But what's just as real is that this Christian from India shows him God's love and compassion by being his friend and helping him to solve his difficult situation. It doesn't get much more real than that.

The shots of Amsterdam are gorgeous! Criminality aside, it's a very beautiful city. And whatever you think of Billy Graham, this conference was impressive. Not many people are as radical as he was. God rest his soul.

In short, if you think Christian movies suck, then go see this one! You will not be disappointed.

An honest portrayal of evangelical churches
24 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not only very well made (great acting, good camera work, good directing), it also gives a very honest portrayal of what most evangelical churches are like. I recognize everything that happens here, been there many times.

From the beginning it's obvious that main character Jake has problems. After losing his mother he barely gets by, and he needs pills to do it. After joining the church group they make him feel like he can do anything, as long as he keeps filled by God's Spirit. The only problem is that he has no idea who that God is, and nobody tells him, because all they want is to gather phone numbers.

The group is shallow and impersonal, and they don't seem interested in Jake's personal life at all. The only thing they want is for him to become just like them. This almost seems like a cult. Especially when Jake doesn't feel like answering his dad's calls.

In the end, what has Jake gained from being with this group? Nothing. He's back on the pills and he doesn't feel spirit-filled anymore at all.

What this movie shows is how it's not done. God's message is all about love. Loving people, helping them, giving them what they need. Not gathering souls to play church. The movie is good, but it could have been even better if they had shown how it should have been. Someone should have taken an interest in Jake's life, helping him and really showing him God's love. Then the viewer could have taken a positive message from this movie. That's why I didn't give it a perfect 10. However, this is still one of the best Christian movies I have ever seen.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)
10/10
Haters are clueless, this is high quality Trek, and then some!
21 February 2020
When I read some of the reviews here, I get very sad. How can anyone call this excellent show a letdown? I tend to think that those haters have either lost their minds or have no idea what quality tv is. Picard is truly magnificent tv, and here's why:

  • it connects flawlessly to the Next Generation tv-series, with lots of cool references to some of its best episodes.
  • it connects flawlessly to the Voyager tv-series, with references to its best episodes.
  • it connects flawlessly to the Nemesis movie, taking the best elements out of it and elaborating on those.
  • it picks up the story of Picard about 20 years after Nemesis, as if the camera was turned off and now turned on again.
  • it fills in some of the gap between Nemesis and now, revealing more information with every episode.
  • Patrick Stewart is still a brilliant actor, reprising his role as Picard brilliantly
  • the story grabs you from the beginning, and keeps gripping you even more after several episodes.
  • it's imaginative, and it makes you think about what happened to Picard and all the other TNG characters in the past 20 years.
  • it triggers the imagination and builds on the good memories.
  • it looks stunningly beautiful and high-tech.

These are only a few of the many reasons why this show is so brilliant. If you can't see that, you have absolutely no clue about what good tv is supposed to be. So to all the haters I say this: please stop make a fool of yourselves by writing stupid remarks, because this show is smarter than you. Deal with it. Either stop watching or start enjoying. Your choice.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

TNG continued!
3 February 2020
This show proves that a new series based on an old series can be really good! And believe me, this is not just good, it's truly excellent!

Star Trek: Picard sort of continues the storyline of the movie Nemesis, but it also introduces a band of interesting new characters. It shows the after-effects of what happened in Nemesis, and the enormous influence this has had on the Federation. It also adds a mystery that fits Picard and TNG perfectly, and it all comes together in a way that is pleasing to both older TNG fans and new audiences.

The SFX look stunning and the production has a genuine Star Trek feel to it. To me as a fan of all Star Trek series (but especially TNG) every episode is a thrill, and I am always sad when the episode ends. I hope this show will last for many years to come!

Demographic crowdpleaser? Yes, but still very enjoyable, and very Star Wars!
24 December 2019
As a long time fan of the original trilogy, I hated the prequels. They had no story whatsoever and the characters weren't likeable at all. When The Force Awakens came out, I was reasonably satisfied because at least it wasn't as bad as the prequels. The Last Jedi however was a messy piece of feces. So I went into the theatre with mixed feelings. Will I like this last episode?

The answer is YES! Even though the critics were right to call it a demographic crowdpleaser (something JJ Abrams is good at), the movie is very enjoyable! It has a well-written storyline and the characters from episodes 7 and 8 felt like they finally came alive. Some familiar faces made the joy complete. This is Star Wars, folks! This is a very acceptable ending to the sequels. The story deals with the questions that the new generation has, that the "old" generation never needed to ask. The characters show their weaknesses, and the older generation offers answers in a great way. I had not expected this from Abrams, so this was a pleasant surprise.

One thing I didn't like was the casting choice for Chebacca. He looks like a big bear, instead of the tall, slender wookie that he has always been. They could have at least found someone that has the same height and posture as Mayhew...

On the plus side, Daisy Ridley finally gets to shine this time. In TLJ she looked like she was just messing around, and this time she's finally the powerful Jedi that Luke has trained her to be. Very cool!

If you are a not so critical Star Wars fan, you will enjoy this movie. I promise you that!

A home video with some After Effects
24 November 2019
I was hoping that this would be a funny parody like Superhero Movie, or that it would be so bad that it becomes funny again. But this is neither of those, it's just bad. It looks like a home video with some Adobe After Effects. An hour and a half wasted that I can never get back...

Could have been so much better...
7 October 2019
This movie could have been really great if the plot had been better. Also, the choice for the main actor could have been better. Like if Anthony Ingruber (who played a younger Harrison Ford in Age of Adeline) had played Han Solo, it would've been a great improvement already. Some scenes are interesting and the movie has a cool start, but it works towards an anticlimax. It left me feeling cheated out of an interesting backstory for Han Solo that I had expected to see. Such a shame...

Henson would be proud!
30 August 2019
I've been looking forward to this tv-series for a long time, and the wait was well rewarded. As a big fan of the original 1982 movie I was wondering if the series could live up to my expectations. The short answer is YES, and then some! I have watched the first episode with awe!

The production looks gorgeous, the puppets look very much like the originals, but with much more diversity. The puppeteering has been brought to the next level, as the movements are a bit more realistic. Very well done!

But the most important aspect is of course always the story. In my opinion they have succeeded in making an interesting prequel, slowly progressing toward the situation at the beginning of the movie.

If you like the original movie, you will certainly love this series!

Deliberately goofy and that works!
25 June 2019
This Spanish Superman parody is seriously funny! Those reviewers that gave it a low rating just don't get it. This movie was not meant to be a big superhero movie, and certainly not to be taken seriously. They made it deliberately goofy, and the result is almost two hours of fun! I had some big laughs with this movie, and enjoyed it all the way. Two hours well spent! Highly recommended for every fan of Superman and parodies.

Very good, entertaining movie with flaws
26 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Like many reviewers are saying, this is a very satisfying ending to the Avengers series. Most Marvel fans will love it, but it's certainly not worth a full 10.

It takes a while for the story to get going. At first the feeling of loss does make an impact, but it gets slow after a while.

The plan to fetch the infinity stones from the past is not very well executed, and the groups get back too quickly. But then there's the final battle, and that looks amazing! Good to see everybody back.

The role of captain Marvel is disappointing to say the least. She seemed so powerful in her own movie, but here Thanos easily beats her.

Captain America does get his happy ending with Peggy Carter, and I can see why actor Chris Evans wants to quit playing him. There's really nothing to tell about the captain anymore...

Overall the movie is packed with lots of fun and also some really emotional moments. The CGI is top-notch, as can be expected from Marvel. The movie is entertaining and I want to see it again, just not right away. Go see it, you will not be disappointed. Just don't expect to have your mind blown...

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)
9/10
Star Trek is alive and kicking!
2 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Gene Roddenberry was a man with a vision. He saw a future where everyone worked together to better ourselves, to explore the universe and to have great adventures. Star Trek Discovery is one of those great adventures.

OK, the acting may not always be great, some characters are not that interesting, not everyone gets nearly enough screentime (like Airiam), and some of the storylines are not as great as they could have been. But it is Star Trek, there's no doubt about that! Let me explain why:

  • it follows Roddenberry's vision of the future
  • it challenges viewers to think
  • it expands boundaries of tv making
  • it has diversity of characters that keep growing
  • it looks really hi-tech

The makers of Star Trek Discovery have really thought it through. The show is set ten years before Kirk, so that they could show the start of the Klingon war, as well as some back stories for well-known characters from the original series. This setting makes for some interesting stories, to say the least.

Saru is an interesting alien with a great background. Sylvia Tilly is a great character because she is autistic (like me), and this is very fresh and original! Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber are the first gay characters on a Star Trek show. Isn't that what everyone wants to see? Airiam looks interesting, sort of like an android, or an enhanced human. I hope we get to see a cool back story for her! Captain Lorca was interesting, because he was the first captain that was not such a perfect boyscout, a captain with a hidden agenda, that is also something we had never seen before on Star Trek. Speaking of boyscouts, captain Pike is a typical Starfleet captain, right along the lines of Kirk and Picard! Emperor Georgiou is mysterious, and we never know whether she is a friend or foe.

The only character that is not that interesting is Michael Burnham. She happens to be the main character, but the fact that she's Spock's foster sister is not very believable, and everything about her seems exaggerated and overly emotional.

Discovery may not be the best Star Trek show ever, but it is Star Trek anno 2017. It may not be what the long time fans expected, but it has everything a Star Trek show needs. If you don't like it because it doesn't live up to your expectations, get over it! Or as William Shatner once said it: "Get a life!".
