Not about knowledge but about entertainment
1 November 2017
Some video clips around some lions are cut together and a story is told about a pride of lions. There are no background information given to suggest, that all the assumptions about the motives of the behavior we are seeing are more than just the product of the fantasy of the author. The story tells us stuff about family ties and enemy lions, but you could easily tell a very different story to the same pictures. The pictures themselves are partly good (a hunting sequence in the second half of the film) but sometimes random and meaningless. The title of this film uses the term "giant killers". I feel this gives us a view on the mindset of the producers. This was almost painful for me to watch to the end.

Liebe nach dem Tod (2005 TV Movie)

not necessary remake, but well done
13 February 2006
The plot is the same as in Random Hearts (1999). If you have seen the Sydney Pollack movie, you will know the story. First I doubt that this TV film is worth watching because it cannot be better than the expensive Hollywood production. But after watching the first minutes I found it well made and watched the whole thing.

In the original I had difficulties with the feelings that developed between the two leads. In Liebe nach dem Tod director Matti Geschonneck did a good job in showing the fragility and unsteadiness of these feelings. If you don't know the original, you will have 90 minutes of good entertainment. The actors did a great job.

Good Sunday evening film.

This is quite a nice crime movie. Normal people, no foolish romantic side storyline, just a police woman with problems on her own searching for a missing girl. We just see her perspective and know as much of the crime as she does. This keeps you curious. Watching this film was entertaining for me for most of the time. Good for a Sunday evening on the couch. Nothing to think about afterwards.

The last minutes of this film pulled my overall rating down. The unreasonable constructed story and the very bad acting of the boy was hard to watch. The voice over telling us they lived happily ever after... this was horrible Hollywood style but did no favor to this film.

Der Clown (2005)

Destruction without sense
24 April 2005
First off, I haven't seen the TV series about the same main character.

I know there is an audience for movies like this. But I tend to expect at least a small storyline that is been followed in the film. After watching "Der Clown" I am not sure what story was told there.

All I can recall is this: A guy, formerly a member of some sort of special forces, dropped out of that unit. Now he is free to break legal rules to successfully hunt down the bad guys. Of course his girlfriend had fought on his side and has been killed in action. We learn this in the opening scene.

The bad guys have the famous idea to rob gold bars (can money be more difficult to carry away?) and they do it with ease. It took just a grenade on the highway to get rid of all the chasing police force.

The Clown starts the hunt. A friend supports helicopters (yes, several of them, because they are wrecked one after the other). And a blondish journalist shows up, right in time to be taken hostage and later to kiss the clown. No other purpose for her to be in the movie. I already forgot how the bad guys were stopped in the end.

Action in a movie doesn't have do be explosions. But in this movie, everything explodes. And as in the German TV series "Cobra 11", cars tend to lift off in slow motion as soon as they hit a little obstacle. This is dull entertainment, destruction for the lover of brute force. You don't care for any character in this movie. The makers tried to make us feel for that poor man that had lost his girlfriend, but it doesn't work just by putting in the scene of her death in slow motion.

If you like TV productions like "Cobra 11", you will probably like this movie. But don't expect more. If you go to the movies to be touched and moved by the story, this is definitely not your film.

Doing Hard Time (2004 Video)

Boring
2 March 2005
I just saw this movie and was bored beyond believe.

The story is without any depth. A boy gets accidentally shot, even the involved drug dealers do not know how that happened. They get some years in prison for the drugs.

The father of the dead boy is left behind, his wife has died too some time ago. All he got is his revenge. So he beats up a cop to get into jail to say hello to the two "muderers" of his son.

The movie did not show the motivation of the characters. You see the father drinking alcohol, but you do not feel his pain. The idea of following the guys into jail is so absurd, that it leads to my low rating. To build a complicated weapon like a pistol out of paper instead of a simple one like a knife out of a piece of metal doesn't make any more sense to me.

The situation in the jail is shown as it is like a normal average us-American jail, but I can only hope that it isn't.

In the end I was left with the question what this was all about. I don't know.

Germanikus (2004)

Not THAT bad
12 February 2005
Polt is telling a fairy tale, a dream he had of how he became emperor of Rome 2000 years ago.

The time is cruel, bad luck if you are a slave. Germanikus is enslaved by the Romans. He is not very bright, but stumbles through the scenes and while a lot of the other slaves got killed sooner or later, he survives and makes it to the top.

The movie is just entertainment, it has no special meaning (as far as I can tell). And I admit: I did laugh at several points. The use of dialect doesn't bother me, I don't think that Polt can do without. But the dialect is not the source of fun in this film.

Most of the comedians playing other minor roles don't have the room to deliver fun or even a personality. They just appear and say some lines. The focus is just on Polt. Many flaws to be a good movie.

There are other movies out there which are really tasteless and disgusting. This one isn't that bad. It deserves 4/10. :-)

no story worth to tell
9 January 2005
I was bored watching this movie. Some say, it is a movie for fans of martial arts. But if you love martial arts, you go to a sports hall and watch the guys practicing. Or a fight in a real competition. In a movie, everyone knows what the other is doing next, it is pure choreography.

No Question, the main actor is a good gymnast. But those are better watched in the gymnasium.

The story is simple and nothing new. To be a good adventure movie, it lacks new ideas. So this movie lines up with all the other action movies, in which the story is just a patchwork to support action or fighting scenes. There are many of them around and, as it seems, there are many who love it this way. That's OK by me, but I don't.
