Black Widow (2021)
If you like Marvel movies you'll like this.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. As an off-and-on fan of Marvel films, this one ranks near the top. I appreciated its scaled back nature and the focus on character development over insane action and cgi. And the characters in this are very likeable. The writing is also top notch and very believable for an otherwise unbelievable comic book film. If you like anything else Marvel does there's no reason you won't like this. The 81% rating on rotten tomatoes behooves me- like you know what to expect from a film like this and it delivers and then some, some critics are apparently expecting a masterpiece even given the comic book source material which is totally nuts to me how anyone can rate this poorly unless you've never seen a Marvel movie before and are expecting Titanic or something. There's not much else I really can say about it... I'm not a professional film critic and don't really want to deep-dive into the pros and cons, I just want to say that I think this is great and really stands up to the likes of the latest Thor and Guardians films. If you like those you'll like this it's one of Marvels better films in my opinion.
Nobody (2021)
Everything Exactly As I Expected
I only gave this 9 stars because it is going to be exactly what you think it's going to be. It wasn't perfect, but it is what you're looking for if you're looking for a movie like this, and you know exactly what I'm talking about if you've seen any movie made within the last 50 years.
Just watch it, you'll understand. It won't surprise you how anything plays out, but it was really well done for what it was. Odenkirk and the rest of the cast did a great job in an otherwise very generic and predictable film. I loved it, but I still have to say it's generic though really entertaining. For mindless, predictable action this is top notch.
If you like dumb action movies this is your jam.
Away (2020)
It's entertaining but has problems
I love sci-fi and space in general so I couldn't pass this up. After watching most of it so far I expected more middle of the road reviews for this but did not expect the horrible user reviews on here. I'm on episode 9 for the record so haven't finished it yet.
In my opinion the episodes are entertaining enough to justify this being made. I had heard it was more about the family than the space which is okay, other sci fi series also lean towards the characters instead of the science like the Expanse (the show, not the books) and it works great. The stories are mostly decent and the drama on the ship is generally good. My biggest problem with the series is that it suffers from the same kind of issues that you would see in shows from the 90s or early 2000s. Kinda like Full House, where to make a theme work for an episode the writers will write a character completely out of whack from what they set that character up to be. For example, in almost every episode, Swanks character Emma is typically level headed and does what needs to be done in a calm and thoughtful way. She is not impulsive and foolish. She avoids drama and is generally professional. Until episode 8 when all of a sudden she's an insufferable nervous wreck the entire episode because she feels disconnected with her family. When this episode finishes and the next one starts her character will have instantly reset back to what it was before episode 8 with no real mention of this whacky meltdown going forward.
To put it in perspective, one episode of Full House saw Jesse go absolutely apes*it crazy because he thought he was getting old so he was going to jump a gap in a bridge on his motorcycle to be cool again, basically for one episode making uncle Jesse a totally different character that sucks just to progress the story they wanted for that episode. This series does this basically with one character, every episode and it really drags the show down instead of just being consistent. The writers could still work in the problems they wanted them to face but had the characters respond the way they have been written the entire season without compromising the show or the story. So far the only characters that have remained consistent is Emma's husband on Earth and the Botanist on the ship.
Another source of grief for many of the reviewers here (and myself) if I had to guess is, the daughter Lex, who is your typical angry, annoying teen that is in many shows like this to create family conflict and drama. Nothing ups the ante quite like having an angsty teen, or a pregnant woman about to give birth for that matter (which hasn't happened here... Yet), in the plot to ramp up conflict and drama. I'm not crapping on the actress however, who does a fairly good job with the part, actually most actors are good here, but just like in real life angry teens are annoying and a well acted angry teen in a series can be even worse because the more realistic they seem the more you want to punch them and tell them to shut up. I had this same problem with the other new sci fi series Raised By Wolves. The child character Campion is an insufferable little prick but overall I really liked that show three episodes in, I just hope someone tells him to shut up and do what he's told, and if not that, have him get punched in the face to at least make the viewers feel better.
All that being said, despite my nitpicks and my wandering all over the place in my points I'm enjoying the series, and I think future seasons will have the opportunity to explore much more interesting situations... especially if they end up getting to Mars. I like watching the pressure to survive at all costs with the ship crew as things go horribly wrong, knowing that any minute their little bubble in space could kill them. I like watching the ground command struggle through sleepless nights trying to solve a problem that can't wait because the fate of the ships crew depends on them solving the issue right the first time. It's why I watch shows like this- because space is unforgiving and watching people push themselves far beyond the limits of what we are normally capable of simply because their life is constantly in danger can make for riveting story telling, especially when situations like these won't be fiction for much longer. It isn't an extraordinary show so far but unlike many netflix series I will actually finish this season. Sometimes series like this just need to find their footing, there's a lot of potential here with decent actors involved, and given the plot there's a lot of amazing places they could bring this if they want to. As of now it's not going to blow anybody's mind, but it's decent enough to watch just to imagine the possibilities that could come with future seasons. It almost feels like a preface to a bigger story, to bring it into the main story they want to tell and I hope that's the case.
Overall this isn't terrible and it's definitely got problems, but it's good enough to stick through and if you're like me you'll see the possibilities that exist for future seasons. Hopefully it gets there and isn't cancelled after one season.
6 Underground (2019)
If you know what it is going in, you'll probably like it
I dodged this for months while seeing it every day on Netflix. Finally after watching basically every other thing that even remotely interested me, I put this on.
After like the first 30 minutes or so I was pretty surprised how much I was enjoying it and how high the production value was for a Netflix movie. Then I looked it up midway and saw it was Michael Bay, which if I knew that I would've watched it right when it came out.
Don't get the wrong idea- I don't watch Michael Bay's movies for the reasons he would want me to. They are so over the top and stupid I almost always enjoy them, but that's coming from someone that actually goes out of their way to watch terrible movies. This one though wasn't even that stupid I genuinely liked it... but it was still stupid. I will say that if you expect a masterpiece when starting this don't even bother starting it.
If you like really stupid movies that are fun with a dumb story, and in this case you like the cast as I did, you'll probably like this as much especially if you love sitting down and watching movies like The Core or 2012 every couple of years. If those entertain you... so will this.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019)
I'm really loving this series.
Kirsten Dunst, an actress I've never much cared for simply because she never has starred in anything remarkable that I've seen up to now, is killing it in this series. At this point it is one of only a few shows I really look forward to every week and have been spreading the word to everyone I know.
And the guy that plays Cody, and the bigger gent who's name I also can't recall, are fantastic supporting characters you can't help but feel for. They come off as authentic pathetic Americans hoping to work their way up to a fantastic life through the false promises of a crap pyramid scheme which still very much exist today.
Not to mention, it starred Alexander Skarsgaard for only the very first episode slaying his role as he does in every single thing I've ever seen him in. There's a reason the producers of True Blood took him from a secondary temp character to a main character for the entirety of the remaining seasons.
I don't know how else to hype this show, but for Showtime it may be my favorite series on the network since Californication and on any network period.Definitely worth checking out.
And now very slight spoilers, if it is even that- I think now 6 episodes in this show is going to take a turn like Weeds did. I think it is only a matter of time before Dunsts character snaps and starts breaking the law in every way possible. I really look forward to it.
I highly recommend this series for anybody that likes dark comedies.
Nova: Building Chernobyl's Megatomb (2016)
I can't believe I'm the only one who's reviewed this!
I was on Netflix, bored, and after seeing the excellent HBO miniseries Chernobyl I noticed this and figured why not. I was absolutely shocked by how amazing this doc was just watching all the worlds greatest minds in engineering come together to build this incredibly huge and complex structure to slide over a collapsed reactor... It just defies belief that humans can do this.
This is worth the hour for a watch, if this sort of thing is even remotely interesting to you give this a shot I can't see how you won't be as fascinated as I was while watching it. Even if you found it half as interesting as I did you'll still really enjoy it.
Rake (2010)
Amazing funny series
I heard about this series from a pal of mine when it was airing season two and I loved it. I wish it would never end, Cleaver Greene is one of the greatest piece of crap protagonists put to screen, you gotta root for the guy even though he's a miserable piece of trash. I saw another reviewer compare this show to Californication, if you liked that you'll like this.
Dead to Me (2019)
Um, where did this come from?
I saw this on Netflix today and saw Applegate so I figured why not. I'd never heard of it but I was looking for something so I put it on.
I'm now almost done with the entire season. I don't write reviews that often and generally only write a review for something I think is either amazing or total crap, and this is actually pretty amazing. I like laughing don't get me wrong, but I typically just don't find movies or shows that funny. And when I do find something, like the big Lebowski 20 years ago, that makes me consistently laugh it sticks with me. This is gonna be one of those, every episode seems incredibly real- Applegate's performance as a "who gives a rip" nastygirl is so spot on and usually hilarious, while also seeming genuine and realistic.
This series came out of left field for me as I've never heard of it until today but it is so much better than I ever could've imagined. If you wanna laugh, give this series a try I can't possibly imagine someone not enjoying themselves while watching this... Unless maybe you're some Puritan prude. In which case I don't understand why you're even reading this. Anyway, give it a shot.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
I loved it
I sat and refreshed Netflix until 3:30am waiting for this to come out earlier this morning. Since I'm a night person I was able to start this and didn't stop watching until I saw every episode at like 7am.
This was SO good. Some of the animation was so amazing I had to Google to make sure it was all animated as some of the segments could actually be mistaken as real actors. Short of one segment with Topher Grace, it is ALL animated. Every single episode of this was original and incredibly well done, hopefully this gets enough support to warrant a season two.
If you like adult animation at all, or science fiction... Or even fantasy there will definitely be a lot here for you to like. I honestly have no complaints, there was nothing about it I didn't like, thus the perfect 10 star review. I hardly ever rate shows unless they are exceptionally great or exceptionally bad, luckily this falls in the first category.
Person of Interest (2011)
Amazing
I forgot just how great this show is until I started watching it again on Netflix. In fact, I think upon my second viewing I like it even more now than I did when it first aired.
Micheal Emmerson, Jim Caviezel, Amy Acker, and the actress that plays Shaw (forgive me I don't remember her name) are maybe the best team ever assembled for a TV show. And since I'm a huge sci-fi nerd, the direction they decided to take the show around season two was awesome. It goes from just a typical, yet still incredibly entertaining, cop drama to a hard sci fi cop drama and the result is nothing short of amazing.
Do yourself a favor, if you haven't watched this... Watch it. It's almost a totally perfect show.
The Passage (2019)
I'm updating my review. It's better than I thought.
Well I gotta say, I love writing anything on a phone because all you have to do is hit the wrong button and you lose it all which is what happened to me a minute ago. I had about four paragraphs on why I want to give this more stars than my original review but I accidentally hit BACK and lost it so... I'm not doing that all again so here's the Cliffnotes. I originally rated this 3 starts, now I'm giving it six. Here's why, briefly:
-the child actress is way better than most kid actors
-Desmond from Lost (I think that was his name, it's been awhile) is cliche as hell in this but everyone that loved Lost knows he rules and if the writers don't completely drop the ball season two he could be great
-i finished the entire season so it's not that bad because I never would've finished it if it was
-the story could be epic if done properly, hopefully the writers don't keep trying to make this the Fox (not fx) version of the Strain
-It's got a great cast from a lot of other good shows, again, if the writers handle it right this could be great.
I'll leave it at that, it sucks I lost my review because smart phones aren't so smart, but this sums it pretty good. I'll leave my old review below so you can see how I felt about the first couple episodes, but it did get better as it went along. Not mind-blowing, but good enough to finish the season. If it gets renewed for another, I hope the writers take some risks and try to make this unique instead of the same old bull.
Old review-
I don't know where to start. I bookmarked this show on my TV Time app because I love sci fi and I'll give anything a chance. It also had actors from Boardwalk Empire, Lost.... And Zack Morris from Saved By The Bell which I never watched but hey, why not.
From the get-go it seems this is Fox's version of their sister station FX's show The Strain. It's almost the exact same and just as bad. The first episode of this was okay but I could tell where it was going. And now in episode three we've got fully grown adults talking about concerning dreams all the time to other fully grown adults. Now, as a 36 year old man I know how much I sit around and think about my dreams and talk about them to other adults so this makes total sense. This is sarcasm by the way and it is so anger inducing. Because I know it's adults that write this show so how do they ever expect me to buy into this stupid idea. Look, it worked for Nightmare on Elmstreet but it's not working here, or anywhere, ever again. Stop doing it. How many times in a tv show or movie has a guy woken up in a freak out all sweating and his girlfriend or wife is like, "same dream again?" STOP DOING THIS IT NEVER HAPPENS.
Usually I'm pretty literate, but typing this out on my phone with so many ideas on why this show sucks is affecting my way of thinking clearly. So bare with me. So the show really kicks off in episode 2, in a science lab where a handful of vampires straight ripped off from Strain, which also sucks so there's no reason to rip it off, and another really bad Fox series, are kept in prison cells. But somehow, these redneck idiot janitors who are stupid are allowed to do their cleaning completely unsupervised around these vampires. I'm not making this up, and it gets worse. So these idiots are cleaning and of COURSE they're taunting the vampires because why wouldn't they? They're allowed to be around them no problem unsupervised even though the entire human race hangs in the balance here. And they get attacked by a vampire and it gets crazy!!
Anyway, episode three is now even more people talking about dreams like they matter, which like I said, makes sense because adults talk about dreams all the time and are super concerned about dreams. Two different scenes within 30 seconds with four different actors talking about dreams to each other. Which basically instantly makes this series suck.
And then five minutes later in what I guess is supposed to be a shocking reveal, one of the main characters kills her mom with a knife. Now I'm not a murder expert but I have seen every episode of Forensic Files ever, and I do know that one single stab wound to someone's gut isn't enough to straight up kill someone instantly. Which in this show, it totally does. Like instantly.
I wanted to like this, seriously, I had this on my calendar months ahead of it's release, but it sucks. And you know what else is offensive? Fox. When they have good shows like Firefly (or even Lucifer but that one I'm ready for people to disagree with me) they kill it off asap, but crap like this will probably get 6 seasons.
Anyway, I'll probably keep watching this for one or two more episodes, if it keeps hanging on adults talking about dreams, pure human negligence like leaving lowlife janitors alone with humankind killing vampires, and one stab instant kills in the gut I'm done.
Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour (2018)
This was awesome
I hardly like pop music really but I'm open to everything and if it's good I'm cool with it, and if I do like it it's only a few artists that write their own songs. That's important to me I don't like pop music from someone hired to do other people's songs. Everyone that does pop mostly sucks in my opinion. I like metal and rock mostly, the last show I went to was slayer with lamb of God in Grand rapids. I saw this come up on Netflix and gave it a shot and it was awesome. Taylor Swift is one of those artists that I always liked because she writes her own songs and can sing them live, that's important to me as I hate the pop stars that sing other people's songs and then lip sync live. Taylor Swift put out a show that is on par with the last Slayer show I saw. Pure talent and trying hard to cater to every fan in the crowd even if she has to take a crane held platform to get there. Then she plays guitar herself for a couple songs. Ask any metal guy, we mostly care about talent and we care about stuff like this, and while it might not be our cup of tea, unlike most other people when it comes to our music, we can appreciate the hell out of this. This girl is talented and apparently she puts on a great show.
Forensic Files (1996)
Worth 10/10, easily.
I loved this show. I stumbled upon it on Netflix maybe a year ago because I couldn't find anything else. I went into it assuming it would be one of those shows my grandpa would watch but it could be interesting enough to play it in the background while I do work around the house. After a couple episodes I stopped doing any work and was locked into the screen.
I must've been through this entire series in about two months. I also got everyone I possibly could to give this a shot, and before I knew it people were texting me every day about the episodes they were on. It became somewhat of an obsession for quite a lot of us.
The narrator, Peter Thomas, is perhaps one of the greatest narrators for a documentary series ever. Over time you'll start to recite the words he's going to say before he even says them (if you watch the series I've got one word for you- Luminol. As an added bonus I'll also mention Super Glue Fuming). The stories they told were never, ever bad, but some were obviously way better than others though I swear there isn't a single bad episode of this. The re-enactments could sometimes be corny as hell, but even the creators said this was intentional so that nobody would confuse the acted scenes for real footage.
Overall, if you like crime docs, or if you're like millions of others who got into Making a Murderer you should at least give this show a chance. There's hundreds of hours of show here, it will consume your life and it's totally worth it.
Norm Macdonald Has a Show (2018)
It takes getting used to
I've only liked Norm MacDonald since I saw Hitler's Dog and though it was the funniest stand up I've ever seen. It was random but I loved it. When I first started watching his interview with David Spade I didn't know what to think. It was so bare bones, no music, no laugh track, nothing. And I thought it sucked basically. But after awhile it started to make me laugh quite a bit.
I then looked up some reviews online and I really think that the reviewers missed the mark. I think it was the New Yorker I might be wrong but they I think misinterpreted David Spades entire interview they made it sound like he hated being there. As far as I can tell Spade and MacDonald know each other pretty well I don't think there was any misinterpretation at all. And Spade got funnier as the interview went in and at the end of it I was really enjoying the show. It's very different from what we are all used to, like I said, very bare bones, but when you get past that it actually is pretty funny. I'm only about half way through the Barrymore episode and they seem to have hit their stride.
I'm gonna watch the rest of them and see how it goes, but so far it seems pretty good. If you liked Hitler's Dog you should give it a shot, it's way off the beaten path but Norm is pretty funny in the way he doesn't seem to ever know what's going on. It could be an act but damn he really sells it if it is
