The Island (2005)
One of the best films I've ever seen
I went to the cinema with friends, not knowing who was in this film, what it was about or anything...we just wanted to see something and decided when we got there, so my expectations weren't very high. I came out the cinema a few hours later, shell shocked and in love with another movie.
The storyline is complex yet simple and believable, especially the year it's set in...it's the future without it being too futuristic. I'm not normally a fan of sci-fi but there was something about this, some innate humanity and raw emotion that drew me in. The acting is star, the effects are stunning and the plot is very exciting. I love how you didn't really know what was going on for a lot of the film, that sense of mystery just keeps you going, wanting more, and when you find out what really is going on, it's not what you expected. McGregor, Johanssen, Bean and Buscemi (to name a few of the fantastic actors in this) are all astounding, I admire their skills.
Go and see this film just because. It'll take your breath away, thats for sure.
Miss Cast Away (2004)
Could win an Oscar for the worst CGI effects ever
This film, had it been done properly, has SO much potential. Parody films are always funny, and people tend to like them because they're light hearted, stupid and silly but fun. This film WAS funny in some parts, but it could have been a lot funnier. The acting itself was OK from all the actors, but...I wasn't satisfied. It seemed a tad empty, and my summary title says it all about the effects. Proper green screens weren't used for this movie...backgrounds were added in after which just looked terrible. No wonder this film went straight to DVD lol. It wasn't ALL a total loss, it is funny and will give you a good laugh (AT it, not WITH it most of the time).
Ghosts (1996)
Fantastic. Wonderful. Classic entertainment.
This is a wonderful short film, with stunning visual effects. You can't deny the effects, make up and dancing in this film weren't top notch. The acting was a bit rusty but it wasn't awful, and to be honest, with everything else going on, it didn't matter.
When people say this is similar to Thriller, they're thinking one-dimensionally. Yes, Michael Jackson did Thriller...a short film with zombies in. But so? Does everyone who has done more than one action film, more than one love song, more than one something something mean they're unoriginal, copying themselves or whatever? No. This is nothing like Thriller, apart from the fact its make believe and maybe scary for little kids.
I also think this is a sort of stab at all the people who say Michaels face is destroyed and what not...with the scene where he takes his face off and smashes it into the ground...as if to say 'yeh look at me and my good looking face that you all so willingly diss, f/ers'. Haha, maybe I'm wrong but thats my perception. Michael takes risks, and because he does he can produce a fantastic short film. He'll always be the king of videos.
Monster-in-Law (2005)
Slow at first but improved 110%
I just saw this now with high hopes, and after the first 20 minutes, I won't lie...I was feeling a little disheartened. It starts off slow, and I was desperately praying it got better -- and it did! :D There were some very entertaining moments, quite a lot actually, that got the whole cinema laughing hysterically.
Some of it was quite predictable, but not in a bad way, it was highly enjoyable and very funny, especially on some of the more physical parts. There were some fantastic one liners from the main parts. If you like original, simple but extreme comedy, then this is the film for you.
Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda make a great pair, working off each other so well. And Michael Vartan is the cookie on top of a fab film! :D I recommend this to anyone, unless you need over swearing, over acting and over sex to enjoy a movie.
