Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
This movie is a lot of fun. Give it a chance.
This movie was awesome! I really regret not watching it at the cinema! It was sooo muuuch fuuun! I really don't know how accurate it is to the main source (the comics), but in my case this aspect is not really a deal breaker, because I think a film should be reviewed independently for what it is. This movie has great great characters, a lot of style, an absolute banger soundtrack, amazing action scenes and a very interesting way of telling its story. I would definitely watch it again! P.S.: I'd advise to not listen to people who attack it based on it having an "agenda", truly the snowflakery of it all. Same thing happened with Capitan Marvel, though I must say enjoyed this movie way more than the latter, which is still quite an ok heroe movie in my opinion.
A Hidden Life (2019)
Quite beautiful, meaningful and moving. A real masterpiece.
This film is one the most moving, beautiful and inspiring pieces of art I have seen in a while.
It follows Franz and Fani, a young Austrian couple, whose ordinary lives are full of joy, love and honest hard work, until World War II comes along and they are faced with the looming prospect of having to serve the nazi regime.
It deals with themes of morality, community, faith, family and, most of all, love. The love this couple have for each other, for their kids, for their family members, for god and for their land. Throughout the course of this film, there is not a moment not infused with it.
I cannot think of one scene I would have cut out of the 2h 54min story I have witnessed. There is no moment that is dull or unnecessary. It all serves to the story, because the story is them... The quiet moments they share, the relationship with their neighbors, the joy of playing with their daughters, the sorrow of having to say goodbye, etc.
It is a beautiful examination of life, humanity and freedom. It doesn't boast with moral superiority or aims at selling you any religious agenda. Instead, it invites you to reflect, like Franz did himself -as this film is based on real people and events-, on the moral responsibility of every action we commit, even when faced with a really difficult scenario.
Is this film for everyone? Probably not. But consider this: it has outstanding performances, an incredible cinematography and score and a powerful beautiful real story that deserves to be told.
Emma. (2020)
It's the first time that I truly get and love Emma
Honestly, of all the Jane Austen stories, the one that I've always had a difficulty fully relating to - especially in film- was Emma, but this film really changed me. Previously I had seen Emma's portrayals at the start only as spoiled, affected and self-centered, so I tough of her as an obnoxious and vane person, but here I saw more nuance from the start. Sure, her story is about how short sighted and full of herself she can be, but what really makes you root for her is realizing how sincere and caring she is with the ones she loves and how much she wants the best for them, wich is ultimately what's behind the things she does -however missguided they are-, and that really comes through in this film.
I truly feel a lot of care, sensibility and joy was put into the making of this film. So, I deffinitely don't think this a movie that places stetics over quality, as others have said, just the opposite. The filmmakers decisions are well suited for the fresh, intimate and feminine vision they had for Emma's world and add to the story, from the scenery and costumes, to the music and the way it's edited and shot, not to mention the brilliant acting and script. There is a lot of subtlety and wits to this movie, and it dares to be full of Anima, wich makes for a really interesting, endearing and fun wach, so I would absolutely recommend.
Solos (2015)
More people need to see this Film
I wasn't able to go the theaters when it was released because I just really hadn't heard about it and it only lasted a day, wich is such a shame. Thank god I got to see it later, though. This film truly deserves to be appreciated. The dialogue is unaffected and smart. The characters are interesting, caring, funny; in sum, really well developed. The cinematography is just top notch (such a way of capturing the beauty of Perú). And the plot is just as real as it gets. There is no big mess or trouble at the middle to unravel at the end and I really believe that such structure is not a requisite to make a solid film that lasts in its viewers and this is a perfect example of that. From beginning to end this is a journey, a journey of friends with genuine passion for films and the struggles they face in their mission to share it with others. And though the premise might sound flat for some, I promise that this film is not dull for a second. It truly makes you feel invited, like you're another passenger in the car, one more friend, and by the end you realize that you are just as invested as they are. You may find yourself thinking that you kind of know them and that you relate to them, like you've made a connection, because they feel so real and so you feel like you've just shared something very intimate with them. And that is very rare and so difficult to achieve, which is why I think everyone involved in the making of "Solos" should be extremely proud. You don't find many movies like this one in the theaters and I hope that changes.
P.D.: Joanna Lombardi, you're inspiring and this movie deserved way better from the cinemas.
