War Dog: A Soldier's Best Friend (2017)
Very emotional documentary
Didn't catch it right from the beginning. It's the stories of war dogs and their handlers. And the eternal bond they share. These are for the most part very sad stories, be prepared.
It's especially upsetting how the mishandling of things by whoever was in charge caused so much grief and pain to a soldier who served his country and who almost died in battle. How could they promise him his dog back and then not fulfill that promise is beyond understanding. They instead put two families in an impossible situation. Why didn't they just give him his dog back right away?
While you understand the value dogs are in war, it really makes you question the ethics of it too. The danger for the dogs and the pain it can cause the human soldiers as well.
I See You (2019)
Unexpected and original
You won't know why the title fits the movie so well until well into it, and that speaks of how well written and made this movie is. That in 2019 there can be a horror/thriller movie made that's so original and unexpected is really something.
Watch this movie. It's good in every way. It holds your interest all through it, and is never predicable, while not using either silly ways to surprise.
Apostle (2018)
Don't waste your time. Shockingly bad
Pointless plot, zero character devolpment, more nonsense, boring long unnecesary scenes, And gross violence.
It's disgusting, shockingly bad and a total waste of your time. Find something decent to watch instead.
Ondskan (2003)
Very real and moving film about violence, resistance and resilience
I saw this film yesterday, and was amazed. I had seen one or two days before just the ending of the film, say, the last minute. I won't tell of course which the ending is, but I'll say that that was enough for making me really want see it. It was moving. Anyway, I had the luck of seeing more of the film this time (not from the very beginning, but almost) and I have to say that is great. Is simply so real, so unpredictable, so different from what one would expect.
I had the impression that the film was based on a real story before I knew that it was.
The film is about Erick, a young man who is sent to a prestigious boarding school, and he sees this a an opportunity to get free from the brutal beatings he receives constantly, and for what I understood, for practically his whole life, at home, from the part of his step-father. To know and understand that is key in understanding why he stands the school and its rules and in fact tries hard to stay there. However bad is there, we know is not as bad as in his own home. But do not misunderstand me. This film is not the story of a suffering man all through the film until he frees himself in the ending. Is not like The Magdalene Sisters, let's say. He stands for himself, not being disposed to stand there the humiliations he stands, silently, at his home. Only that always trying to maintain a certain equilibrium between when he can stand up and when he can't, without being expelled.
I think that one of the scenes that are shocking, is when he get severely beaten up by one of the older students in the dining room. It seems that he is crazy, but that only helps us realize how bad he has been beaten up at his home, we just know that's the only reason he can stand that.
Maybe for some people is somewhat hard to understand his insistence in staying there, even when things get really bad. I think that the main reason is that he is simply terrified at his step father. So much that even when he has confronted the older students, and has been expelled, he does not dare to tell his parents about it. He has confronted everyone, but can't even say it to his parents. Anyway, that doesn't seem to be the only reason, it seems that to finish school and study a career is also important to him. And that her mother made a big economic effort seem to be of some importance as well.
I think that people who haven't been through something at least similar to what the character has been through, may not understand completely the character's motivations.
The film is not a moralist one. He tries not to use violence, but that doesn't seem to solve anything for him. The references to Gandhi seem to be there only to get to the conclusion that sometimes non resistance is just not enough to defend from violence and cruelty. Which, in my opinion, and only in some cases, is true. Especially when it comes to domestic violence, and bullying. The film, though, never goes as far as advocating revenge as the solution.
Stir of Echoes (1999)
Very good
I saw this film the another day, and I really liked it. It's scary, mysterious, fun. But I especially liked the characters. They are really well constructed, and developed. The main character, for example. We are told a lot about him. Far more than one would expect, in a mystery film. The first scene tells us a lot, in the beginning, when he is hypnotized, and wakes up, and he is crying; we learn that is because he was talking about being bullied and beaten up by a former classmate at school, as a child. That, already, tells us that he didn't have a very easy childhood, that he's probably a very sensitive guy. We, later, are told that he used to play the piano as a child. The relationship with his wife is very believable. Is a very lovable character, and one can relate to him.
I have only one criticism: That black gay, the one the wife meets, and who explains to her what happens to him (her husband). What's the need of that?, one understand what is going on with him, WE DON'T NEED AN EXPLANATION.
Apart from that, the film is great.
I recommend it.
Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Excellent... extremely funny
I just couldn't stop laughing.
George Clooney is a divorce lawyer. Cynical, cold-minded, and who seems to be going through some sort of existential crisis. In a case, he meets a woman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who seems to be very similar to him: apparently, only interested in money, in getting the money of her husband. There is attraction from the first moment, but some of them may have an interest in something else than just one another.
One good thing about the film, is that one gets fond of the characters, even through apparently they are cold-minded. That is, partly, just a first impression.
I think one should mention the best friend of George Clooney. His opposite: sensitive, kind, and really funny.
It's a fresh comedy. Very good script and acting. And very well directed.
I really recommend it.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Very very funny
This film is really great! I laughed all of the film. And it's just so different from any other comedy I had ever seen. Really recommend it.It is really hilarious. The discussion and fight with the French is probably my favourite part. I've been reading here, and I should see the film again, since there are many things I don't really remember. Undoubtly is one of the best comedies there are, with the Charles Chaplin films. Specially The Gold Rush. I would give it ten stars, but just feel reticent of doing it. The rabbit part is really funny too. And the ending. These thing of the Monty Python is not really very known here in South América, though it should. Good Bye.
