Prey for the Devil (2022)
Cheap jump scare and bad CGI galore
This film is just not good. From the right beginning, the premise looks unintersting and has been done 100 times before, so my expectation going in to the cinema wasn't high. But still, this film just bored me.
The plot is so cliche and the predictable, including the "twist". You know where exactly where the story's gonna go, unlike some other horror films you've seen this year. The director chose to use a ton lot of jump scares trying to make up for the lack of real suspense and horror, but they are just lazy and cheap, doesn't work at all. I'm usually quite affected by jump scares but this film got me make just once, and they attempted 10 times, if not more. There are also some really bad CGI effects which really threw me out of the movie.
The performance from our lead actress isn't very impressive either. Her mannerism just doesn't look like a nun. Some supporting actors give very nonchalant, nonresponsive reaction in certain scenes.
Overall I wouldn't call this the worst film, it is just very forgettable and derivative. It does not have a memorable storyline, performance nor atmosphere.
Just Beyond (2021)
Pure cringe
The 'stories' are definitely cringeworthy if you are not a 9 year old. The acting overall is just embarassing especially in episode 3.
I can see how it inherited the goosebumps series, since it definitely give me the goosebumps(awkward, embarrassed kind of goosebumps).
American Horror Story: Winter Kills (2021)
an insult to the audience
As a fan of the first 5 episodes I feel so betrayed by this episode. I don't know if Ryan Murphy did this on purpose or forgot to take his black pills but this episode is completely a waste of time, and a waste of all the character/ story build up from previous episodes.
Just when I thought RM has finally done it right after so many undewelming seasons, he messed it up with the worst possible way. The plots are totally random, character behavior makes zero sense, and zero payoff for lots of the characters/storylines like Doris, Belle, Austin, Holden. This finale just does not make any sense. Again he tries to pull off some social commentary but it's just out of nowhere and doesnt add anything to the main story that we actually care about. Even I or any sensible person can come up with better endings like this.
After this and the spinoff show, I dont have much hope for the second part of this season.
Jakob's Wife (2021)
Started off strong, then it turned into a Santa Clarita rip-off.
The first 2/5 of the film was pretty engrossing: solid performance from the main cast, especially barbara crampton, interesting and dark storyline interlaced with funny elements, decent gore.
However around the midway of the film it starts to evolve into this story that we've seen dozens of times, and it has been done much better before. I'm not saying the first half was original, but at least it provided a new perspective into this subgenre and the transformation was captivating enough. But the steam was lost when a major turning point has been hit and it went downhill from that.
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
better than part one, that accent though...
I thought overall, part 3 1666 is the most story-driven one and draws a decent conclusion to this story. I'm not saying I don't like pure slasher fun, but I felt if the focus is to be campy and gory, the first one didnt succeed in that department, not enough gore or kills.
The acting was mediocre at best, but I don't expect any top-notch acting from them so I'll let it pass.
My biggest issue with fear street part 3, however, is the accent. Clearly the actors arent familiar with what Irish accents should sound like and they are embarrassing themselves, and insulting the audience. I've seen SOME people, mostly audience from the US, saying they thought they did a good job regarding the accents. Well have you guys actually been to Ireland and have heard what a proper Irish accent is like, or at least, have some common sence? The poor imitation is really off-putting and made me hard to enjoy the first half of the film. It felt more like an american high school play rehearsal.
American Horror Stories (2021)
character writing and acting at its worst
Someone has a brilliant idea of doing a quick cash-grab: since audience love the murder house, let's throw more people into this place and create a bigger mess, oh and audience love psychopaths so let's make everyone psychopaths and treating audience like they are dumb. It has to be a hit right? Oh also, we need to throw in as many celebrities' kids as possible so their parents will be grateful and donate us so we could produce more garbish for their kids to play with.
Let's see what they've made:
Horrible writing with minimal storyline, erratic and inconsistant character behavior without facing any real consequence, painful-to-watch 'acting' (I put it within apostrophes because most of the 'actors' here are an insult to the real actors), cringy dialogues. Whoever is involved in these project should be ashamed of himself, except for Matt Bomer and the actress playing the psychiatrist.
False Positive (2021)
the ending could have been darker
There's literally nothing happened in the first 90% of this film. With minimal horror element and very annoying 'is she hallucinating or is this all real' trope, I quickly lost my interest and investment in the story, anything we see can be her illusion right, so why should we care?
The last five minutes kinda saved it from being a 4/10 movie to a 5/10 movie, but still the payoff isn't worth the watch, I wish the ending could be darker, for instance she could have really killed the twin, imagining them floating out of the window, or she could have thrown them out and went back feeding the dead fetus, if they really want to have that shock factor. I do enjoy the ending scene, I just wished she did more than that and gave the husband more punishment.
Army of the Dead (2021)
this boring film is taking itself too serious
I'll keep it shor, the only interesting things about the movie are the zombie tiger/horse and the pilot lady.
Other than that, it's full of tropes, one-dimensional and irritating characters, cliched story and boring dialogues. It's so uninspiring and can't believe in 2021 people are still buring money to make this kind of generic stuff with zero nutrition .
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Dumb character decisions for the sake of plot line
This movie has some most nerve-wracking character decisions I've ever seen in any movies. It's as if they deliberately make those victims do certain things just to kill them off and make the antagonist look more disgusting. For isntance, why in a million years would you invite a lowlife fraud onto your boat out in the sea and decided it's the perfect moment to tell him that you will.expose him and make him lose his job which apparently he desperately needed? Also, what makes Amanda Seyfried's character think it's a better idea to leave his murderous husband at night, when he has a higher chance of coming back, and proceeded to drink the liquid from him, and, crawl back to the house? Why? These decisions seems too convenient and so dumb that it made me furious when watching this film. I'm not even going to mention the ending.
