Hytti nro 6 (2021)
If you have ever been a traveller in your life...
...at least once, you will understand the depth of this movie. I feel emotional writing this review. Traveling (not holidaying) teaches you some extremely important lessons in life: be spontaneous, let the wind carry you, the broken plan is the right plan, being silly is both the question and the answer.
Everything in this movie ticks the boxes, I love the low profile production, I love road movies, I love people with a backpack as I am one of them.
A particular note for the closing soundtrack that I can't stop playing on my laptop.
Really a great production, the best movie I watched so far in 2023.
Svart krabba (2022)
Boring plot, stunning visual.
Are we really running out of ideas when it comes to scripting? After 15 min you already know how it will end up.
On the visual side it feels like a waste, such a beautifully framed movie without an engaging story; it eventually implodes and collapse on itself.
Shame, it could have been really good.
White Lie (2019)
Not a feeling good movie
I think this is a good production but it made me feel very sand even after the viewing. It's painful to watch and that's what the directors wanted.
The story is pretty simple but good: an avalanche of lies that grow out of control and you'll feel the pain of each of them.
There are two things that doon't fit in my opinion: you would never ask so many pushy specific questions to person with cancer I wouldn't at least, also some of the questions she gets continuously asked by random people seem to arrive from a specialised doctor (some terms I personally have never heard in my life)..
These two elements made it a bit unreal, but that's me.
Nonetheless I would suggest the viewing
Guns Akimbo (2019)
If you are a teeneger that likes superheroes, guns, blood and your spend your life on twitter/facebook: you must watch this
But if you are 15y or older and/or you have a brain you'll be disappointed.
IMDB are you actually going to do anything at all about all the rating/reviews? Can I suggest an algorithm where too many 9 or 10 and 1 or 2 are given on the same title?
Now It's Dark (2018)
Visually stunning
The scenography of this movie is absolutely remarkable, and it deserves to be watched only for this reason. Beautiful!
About the story, I personally found it a little too long. It feelt like there's been an attempt in putting too much into it. I would have thought this is one of those cases where you can use the sentence: less is more. In general I din't find it engaging as it could have been. But that's me. You'll notice the Scandinavian style and it's indeed a positive thing.
I do suggest the viewing but I do not expect everybody to like it.
7 años (2016)
Not a bad movie, but...
I did enjoy the movies, in general I do like "one room" movies as there's nowhere to hide and the viewer can entirely focus on the story. Very theatrical.
I have two point I would like to mention:
- there's a bit too much camera jumping around from one side of the table to the other, this is usually normal and expected for dialogues, but when the entire movie is pointing at faces of people after 1h:30 it feels a bit too much.
- I think we are in front of a great missed opportunity. The subjects are so unique and especially beautiful/rich that it's difficult for a "normal viewer" to engage or be part of them. You probably feel opposite like criticising them. No Stockholm syndrome.
Nonetheless I would suggest the viewing.
Generational Sins (2017)
Boring, below average, seen1000 times story
Nothing original here you know already how it ends up after 5 min of watching. Boring, I really don't understand the 8.2 rating?!?!
From the title I thought it was a kind of challenge to religion of similar story related to it which is very much a popular topic nowadays. The truth is: It's just an attempt to produce a feeling good movie: go to Church and solve all your problems. Good luck.
I wouldn't recommend it.
Den skyldige (2018)
As good as it gets
I watched this at the festival where after the projection we had a QA session with the director.
The Film itself is technically impressive, all framed within 2 rooms where all you'll see is the main character at the phone and very little more. This is not a limitation but instead the strength of the Movie itself; it's all about guided imagination. The dialogues push your figurative skills to build this outdoor world that is intentionally not shown to you.
There has been a lot of background work/preparation for this Film and it's all visible in the final product.
The director did a great job alternating long moments of high tension with some short funny ones to engage the audience.
I do consider this Movie very unique and original but you might find some similarities with Locke and perhaps also Phone Boot where a series of phone calls is the actual stage.
Unmissable title for 2018
Bravo!
Kelebekler (2018)
"forced" comedy
I watched this at the festival when it was presented. I had plenty of people around me laughing hard for every single sentence (often serious dialogues) but I didn't. I thought to myself may be I am in a bad mood today because this is not funny at all. When eventually after the projection the lights were turned on and there was the QA session with the director I looked around and I got the answer to my question: pretty much all the audience was Turkish. I guess it's true what they say about Turkish and Indian films, they are really good for nationals but fail to make it internationally because they are not understood by other cultures. If you think I'm harsh ask yourself if you would laugh to sentences like e.g.:
- mom killed herself
- a suicidal man left a note: sometime I feel good sometime I feel bad
If you do I guess you have a Turkish sense of humor and this movie is indeed for you.
There were 4 times where I think I smirked but the overall "have to laugh for everything" approach spoiled those moments too.
Manifesto (2015)
Art and above
Don't expect a drama with a storyline here, this is another beast. I would see this video projected (with huge success) in a modern art museum of choice. It's even too deep to be fully absorbed at the first view, and you really have to be in the mood to match this. Liking the topic is not good enough.
It is visually stunning, literally porn for the eyes. If you're into art do watch this, if you're not into art and looking for e.g. a romantic comedy you'll be disappointed. I can see a scenario where people skip to a random minute just to absorb a specific scene/concept, more or less like opening the bible at a random page.
My favourite parts are the TV news and the school but it's of course entirely subjective.
This title should be rated either 1 or 10 I don't see how anyone could chose anything in between.
El último Elvis (2012)
A masterpiece
This is one of those movies you find yourself still thinking about, days after you watched it.
It's simply pure, brilliant, cinema.
It tells about passion, work, obsession and love melted into a unique thing.
It reminds me a lot "the wrestler" but this takes it one big step further
The director did a great job in unveiling the story line, and what a performance from the main character (considering he's not an actor himself!)
In one word: masterpiece
PVC-1 (2007)
Cheap
I started to feel like I'm wasting my time when the family around the main character pretend to be crying, such a poor acting. The film idea is actually good but the ridiculous execution of it... oh dear: "a high tech bomb, remotely controlled, fit into a pvc pipe glued around the neck of a woman that lives in a poor rural area" it's out of place as a minimum. Now and again the bomb emits a sound and the reaction of the characters... feels like watching kids acting at a local school theatre. -(fake tears) -Papito! -(fake tears) -Mamita! -(fake tears) -Goto first fake tears and repeat. There are some interesting ideas though, like the run looking for help and the way the camera is used throughout the movie, but bottom line it feels like a 10 years old trying to paint a Gioconda.
Nice try
