Sexify (2021)
Meh...
I think there's an unwritten rule in polish cinema - "if it is targeted at the general public, it's probably garbage". We, as a nation, are unable to do funny, light-hearted films and TV series. Watch any modern polish comedy, and you will most likely find yourself stuck suffering for 90 minutes through mediocre acting, lazy writing, unfunny jokes and boring, pointless plots.
Sexify is no different - what it's supposed to be, I guess, is our version of Sex Education, but it falls miles short in every aspect. Where Sex Ed is subtle, Sexify is vulgar and coarse. Where Sex Ed is funny, Sexify is cringy. When Sex Ed talks about a variety of topics regarding human sexuality, Sexify screams "FEMALE ORGASM!!!" and it's essentially the only thing it has to say.
The acting has its ups and downs, but even good acting won't help if the characters are just way over the top. And we are talking caricaturally over the top. We have Natalia - a total nerd who doesn't know what sex is at 23. Paulina - the typical housewife adolescent who has no say in her relationship and lives under the dictate of her boyfriend. Finally, Monika, the seemingly heartless one-night-stand enthusiast, who deep down is soft, emotional and sad. In essence, the clichést of cliché.
At no point is there an attempt to make the viewer invested in the plot or connected with the characters. There are no attempts to be witty or funny. There are no attempts to inspire some reflection in the viewer. It is just a brainless sit-through of eight hours, which you will most likely not even enjoy that much...
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
When you try your best and you don't succeed...
First things first - I would call myself a moderate Marvel fan. I have watched most of the movies and know enough about the plot and general lore to be able to watch the movies without going "who the hell is this" every minute.
Having said that I think that the movie was average. Not bad. Not good. Just a film you watch and then forget about two days later. When I watched Infinity War in cinema I was pretty impressed - I wasn't dying over it, but for a superhero movie it introduced a lot of new ideas to the table.
Endgame on the other hand just feels like a chinese takeover from two days ago you stumble upon in your fridge. Most of the plot is just boring. There is little to no tension, the action jumps all over the place, the actions of the heroes often make no sense at all. I am not a fan of time travel because it takes a lot of skill and precision to write a story that isn't chaotic. And Endgame didn't manage to convey a good time travel story - which is like what the whole movie is about basically.
All in all I think Endgame might have been released a bit to early. They should have put some more time, thought and effort into it, especially when this movie was supposed to be the grand, spectacular finale of such a huge scale saga. A bit dissapointing.
A Star Is Born (2018)
An average story that has it's moments
Prior to watching this movie I didn't watch any of the previous versions - to be honest I didn't even realize it was yet another remake. I went in a bit sceptical about Lady Gaga as a lead role, and I wouldn't call myself a great Bradley Cooper fan either.
The opening fifteen minutes are cringy. There is a lot of weird dialogue and scenes that don't make much sense. Then the movie gains some momentum, but can't keep it up for more than twenty minutes, because everytime something starts developing the movie hits you with some boring stuff. Lady Gaga turns out to be OK for the role, Bradley Cooper tries a bit too hard and the movie itself goes for all the easy tricks to make your eyes wet, but falls a bit short of doing so.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
A show that pulls you in for good
I decided to watch the first episode of "The End of the Fucking World", because my sister had recommended it to me. Now I'm not really a "teenage rebelion TV-show" kinda person, so I was pretty sceptical and after the first episode the only thing I could say about the show was "bizarre".
I'm really happy that I actually decided to watch the next episode, beause the show just keeps on getting better until the very end. It has this marvelous mix of dark humour, wit, comedy and shows a relationship between two teenagers, like you have never seen before.
I binge-watched the whole thing and was completely mesmerized throughout. Even if you think that teenage drama isn't really for you, give it a try. I'm pretty certain you won't be dissapointed.
