Immaculate (2024)
Boring and irritating lead
I don't know the hype about the lead actress, having never seen her in anything before, but throughout this movie she goes from boring softly spoken American girl in an Italian convent, to shrill screaming wailing noisy banshee woman in the second half.
Seriously - I get that she's pregnant and in distress (and for the last 20-30 minutes, in labour) but the CONSTANT screaming was just annoying and absurd. She sounds like an adult film actress during a pivotal scene, if you catch my drift.
Waaaayy over acted, I switched it off a couple of times as my ears were hurting.
There's nothing original or outstanding about this film, it's a recycled trope we've seen a hundred times. Scares don't pay off - I would say simply don't bother.
Godforsaken (2020)
Some decent elements, but felt like it would never end
Once you get past the cheesy low budget acting, there are some good parts to this movie. Some creepy scenes and the guy who played Chris was great and genuinely creepy. Chad's mum was also a good character/ actor.
But the last 30 minutes felt like 4 hours, I thought it was never going to end. Just non stop running and screaming and shakey camera. I got bored.
The girl, Katie, was pretty annoying in the 2nd half just constantly crying. I was relieved when they finally all died.
Wren the 3 of them were trying to hide, why did they seem to make as much noise as humanly possible? Stop screaming and make a plan maybe.
Host (2020)
A Fun Little Movie
I was impressed with Host, it's better than I expected and kept me entertained throughout. I didn't like the character Gemma, she was obnoxious as hell from the start. Other than that, good cast and solid scares - yeah they're kind of cheesy and some will make you laugh and scream, but it was fun to watch!
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Predictable, Frustrating, Pointless
It starts off well, if a little predictable. Then becomes entirely predicable and dull. Pointless characters, ghosts that do very little besides throw a teatowel around once during a seance and perfome a 15 minute whispery monologue in the final segment. This is basically just jibberish though and adds nothing to the plot.
Save yourself time and watch something else.
In Fear (2013)
Decent little horror
This film is simple, there are no flashy effects, no huge cast of extras, or spectacular scenery. Its a simple premise and it works because we've all been in those situations - you take a wrong turn, your GPS messes up or you lose signal, and you think 'what if?' - this is the 'what if' scenario happening.
I found the cast were good, the pacing was fine, yes there were annoying things that happened and some moments where I said "I wouldn't do that" but overall its a good watch and I liked the ending.
If you liked Eden Lake, Wolf Creek and Killing Ground; you will like this.
American Murder: The Family Next Door (2020)
Chilling, even if you know this case already
I have to admit to knowing a lot about the Watts murders before this documentary, having watched hours of police bodycam and interivew footage on YouTube, as well as courtroom testimonies and the memorial service.
This case shook me when I heard about it, especially with all the Facebook videos Shannan made, and all the pictures of Bella & Cece, you felt like you knew them to a degree.
This hits differently when all the footage is compiled together in chronological order, particularly footage of Chris and the girls because you'll see someone who appears to be a great dad making happy memories with his children.
Absolutely chilling, it does not feel like some anonymous tragic case you read about. They seem like normal likeable people.
My heart breaks for Shannan's family who loved her so much.

Blair Witch/VHS rip off
This film is terrible. It doesn't even deserve 1 star. There are several lines stolen directly from Blair Witch Project. Actors are all dreadful and obviously low paid, worst of all being the woman who plays Brooke; whilst being held captive she doesn't even scream or fight, just flops her hair extensions about a bit and says 'no let me go' in a breathy voice. I'm glad they all died.
