Limbo (2023)
Thoughtful, Heavy, Moody & Excellent Drama
If you're looking for a violent, action-packed, Hollywood-type film you won't find it here & you'll probably write a snarky IMDB review. If, however, you prefer strong characterization, atmospheric settings, a gripping plot & perfect casting, this is your cup of Aussie tea. I was halfway through the film before I realized it was B/W - I only knew that the general feel of the extraordinary setting grabbed me from the first couple of minutes. Simon Baker is in top form & the rest of the casting was perfect for each role. The story line is strong and the film doesn't deviate from the central plot, but we are given a broad picture of all other characters and their relationship to the main conflict - it all works seamlessly yet intricately. This is one of the best films I've seen in a long time & happily recommend it.
Gray Matter (2023)
I'll be watching it again
After viewing "Project Greenlight," I was prepared to be disappointed in this film, but it was SO much better than the self-absorbed producers of Greenlight painted it. Yeah, a few problems with the script (I could have used some backstory, and 'Derek's' explanations were wordy and patronizing), but the acting, the flow, the suspense were impeccable, in my opinion. It held my interest every.second and this isn't even a genre I usually watch. I'll be looking for future work by director Meko Winbush, actors Mia Isaac and Jessica Frances Dukes. I'm recommending this to my family & friends, and on social media.
(Project Greenlight didn't do this movie any favors by its backhanded apologies for low budget and short shooting time. I applaud and congratulate Meko Winbush on this intricate and gripping film.
Marcella (2016)
8 episodes are 5 too many.
SO many characters, so many complications, so many flashback scenes, so confusing! By the final episode I no longer cared which nutty character perpetrated which heinous crime nor how anything affected any one of the psychotic principals. The motivations seem manufactured, psychological overlays remain unexplained, relationships are muddled and the casting was poor. Parts of the series were gripping and highly dramatic, but it felt like a puzzle that had dropped on the floor and the pieces remained scrambled. I love binge-watching and often re-watch multiple times. Once was more than enough for this one, however.
Nice scenic tours of London, though.
