This movie started off with promise, then slowly plummeted downhill, falling into the same category as all the other half-baked, general crowd-pleasing films that wasted their budget trying to be something they're not. While I was a fan of the casting and stunning scenery, the dialogue, 'fight' scenes and storyline left much to be desired.
Skarsgard and Anya are great actors that were victim to misguided direction. As for Nicole Kidman, she's still struggling to nail accents.
The conflict and battle scenes were slow and felt disjointed as well as low budget.
Though, I could have given grace to all of these mishaps if it weren't for the overwhelming sense of confusion. I found myself asking 'WHY?!' regularly because of the nonsensical writing and story development. There were so many moments that were unnecessary filler and times where things just didn't add up. Why hadn't anyone except Amleth aged at all in those years that passed? Why, after Amleth pillaged and burned Olga's (Anya) village, did she think 'this is the man I want to have children with'? Why, oh why did we have to endure endless 'vision' scenes of the family tree? I'm not sure I'll ever get the answers but if you also want to leave a movie scratching your head and wondering if it was worth watching at all, then watch the Northman.
