Bottoms (2023)
Disappointing
Bottoms is one long TikTok made for the chronically online queer teenager. Didn't love or hate it - I feel indifferent and it's ultimately forgettable. Was there a plot? Not really. It looks like they had fun making it but it wasn't cohesive and it wasn't funny enough for any of that not to matter. And where were the laughs? Not being had by me. Honestly, I don't know what they were going for. What were the stakes? As someone who is possibly in the target audience for this film, It wasn't very gay, it wasn't campy, it wasn't stupid enough, and the characters were too old and mostly straight. At least it was a short movie. The very end is fun- but teenage girls killing football players is always fun. Better luck next time.
Resurrection (2022)
Let me plead my case
At this point I'm not sure if this is a "good" film or not. I really disliked the ending. But I can't stop effing thinking about it. I've been doing impressions of Tim Roth in this movie for weeks. It's so bizarre. And I think a prequel would be cool- the story is intriguing. I would love a bigger glimpse of what their old relationship was like. Rebecca Hall is a star. She has been killing it in thrillers lately with The Night House being my favorite movie of 2021. And Tim Roth will always be a movie star to me. IDK what everyone will think about this movie, but they will think SOMETHING lol. At the very least, it was a memorable movie and that means something nowadays. Psych Thriller/horror fans dive in.
Maps to the Stars (2014)
A hidden gem for those who get it
I am personally shocked by the underwhelming reviews for this movie. It has become one of my favorites and I have re-watched it many times. I even bought the dvd to always have it on hand. It is a movie That I've showed all of my friends and they all love it. I don't recall this movie being talked about, and I don't remember seeing any advertising. I only knew about it because I am a Cronenberg fan.
If you are a fan of Bruce Wagner, the screenwriter, and enjoy his sense of humor this would be a movie for you. It has such a uniquely dark sense of humor. I understand how this is not a movie for everyone. Personally I hope this movie goes down as a cult classic one day. I often feel sorry for people who haven't watched it especially if you are a big Cronenberg fan as I am. Julianne Moore is incredible. As is John Cusack. So many quotable lines and iconic scenes. A movie that makes no sense in our reality. And in order to enjoy it you have to surrender and immerse yourself into the reality this movie exists in. Where ghosts are real. Characters have deep human trauma. Mental illness. Hallucinations.
Sit down, forget reality- open your mind. See where it takes you.
Goodnight, Sugar Babe: The Killing of Vera Jo Reigle (2013)
A very hard movie to rate
In a way, part of me wants to give this documentary a 9, based on the pure disgust I so deeply felt. I love documentaries and horror and I like to watch the most disturbing movies you can find sometimes. I've pretty much seen them all. This one for me is the most disturbing documentary I have ever seen. The family doesn't seem real. You wonder how such people could exist and call themselves human. Incredible monstrosity. I don't want to over exaggerate - it's hard to find the right words to properly describe and review this documentary. So I guess I give it a 7. I respect any Director that presents a film so evocative that you feel it physically. That said, this is not a movie fit for a rewatch. And not a movie fit for many people probably. It's not a happy story; or one left with much hope.
