Awake (III) (2021)

Given the terrible reviews I'm reading I think you watched Bird Box instead
13 June 2021
Just finished watching and it is not bad. It is not a Interestellar but it is not a 4 neither. Some things reminded me of War of the Worlds (the first one, the second one is <4). The only thing that felt wrong was that the people lost their minds too fast, but it isn't normal insomnia anyway. The ending didn't suck and gave me a laugh, it also made sense given the nature of the disease.

Godzilla (2014)

Stunning images, engaging story and HUGE kaijus
14 April 2021
I watched the other movies first (King of monsters and Godzilla vs King Kong) and I found this one way better. The human's aren't annoying, they participate of the plot and they slowly uncover the story (they aren't just there to make geek jokes or say obvious things, in fact I don't remember them joking) and make the kaijus seem huge and scary, instead of the city looking small.

Due to the critics I had heard before I thought I wouldn't see Godzilla in this one, but he just shows up late (after 1h) and it is epic. He might not be in focus all the time, but you also have a lot of camera time of the other kaijus, you don't miss the monsters.

You get to see some gorgeous scenes like one falling through the clouds and the musis is perfect.

To the people who think this isn't realistic...
4 December 2020
The condition exists, the only thing made up is that cheesy idea that you will meet someone special whose face you will remember, there are different levels of prosopagnosia and if you have it that bad, that is all.

No, you can't recognise people just by their voice, maybe after some time of focusing on it with that intention. My condition is not as bad as hers but I have to make a mental list of things that distinguishes the person from the others, which is not too practical because they are common or can change. At the start is just hair color, beard, glasses, skin color, fat/thin and "does he have glasses?", scars are blessing. The only non measurable thing I've ever use are things like "Something in his eyes makes it seem like he is always sad" (which isn't always true..., so no reliable either).

The measure she uses at some point of the movie is funny but makes sense. After some months I can actually see the differences and not just memorize them, but I'm a lucky one (and don't dare to change your haircut). Until then I have to count the stripes of the zebra.

Mulan (2020)

It is entertaining, but they did a mess
19 September 2020
The movie is enjoyable if you don't expect it to be like the original. I don't know why, but they didn't even add the songs as a background song, not even the Cristina Aguilera one.

The antagonist's eagle is now a shapeshifter, I liked the character, they did the same with Maleficient's raven. Now, not only they removed the dragon but they replaced it with a phoenix that looks like a kite and they talked about resurrection, when the chinese phoenix (Fenghuang) doesn't do such thing. They wanted to add chinese mythology and they did it wrong.

And instead of making Mulan a normal woman who proves that she is as capable as the men after some training, she is OP since she is a little girl because she is blessed with a strong Chi. She can dodge arrows, throw them with a kick, perform acrobatic tricks. The other movie was about equality, wits, love and perseverance, this one is about the chosen one.

Mulan (2020)

Fantasy movie with the same concept but too many mistakes
19 September 2020
"A young woman disguises as a soldier to prevent her father's death". That is what it shares with the animated movie. The dragon is replaced by a phoenix, now the problem is that despite phoenix existing in chinese mythology (Fenghuang), they don't represent resurrection, they are immortal, they writers didn't even use google. Then we have Shan Yu's eagle, they did the same they did in Maleficient with the raven, turned her into a woman (a shapeshifter witch). I liked the character, I don't know if there are witches in hun mythology, but they didn't mixed it up like the phoenix.

Don't expect any music from the original movie, not even the instrumental one. And that beautiful song "Loyal, Brave, True". It is only in the credits. It is like they didn't know anything about the audience.

Finally, this Mulan is too OP, she dodges arrows like Neo and does CGI parkour. The first wouldn't matter in another movie, the problem is that it seemed out of place.

I give it 5 stars because despite all I enjoyed it, but I would give it more if they hadn't added that cringy things and commited that mistakes. I really don't understand what they wanted to do, I thought they removed elements from the animated movie to make it more realistic or to make it match the mythology but they did it wrong.

The opening is awesome, check it on youtube
18 September 2020
I don't care about the creepy cheap 3D graphics, I don't like them but I have already enjoyed shows like Insect Cage, I can ignore them. But the 2D animation is terrible too, characters have weird expressions.

Dialogue isn't good either, one character only exist to point out the obvious and has a personality change within minutes just so it can fulfill the ending some chapters afterwards, there is no way to explain it except for a magic bound. The only good lines were the dragon ones. Perhaps if this wasn't 16+ it could be ignored because (most of) that audience focuses in the action.

The story is good though, the problem was the execution. I can imagine it as a short story of a couple of pages, it would be cooler. I will check the game.

Good story, bad art
10 February 2020
I liked the story, watched all in the same weekend (12 episodes, no boring fillers).

I thought the main character would be the hybrid guy from the netflix thumbnail, then I though it was the cliche cool cold swordman, but it is more about the the girl he rescues and the backstories of the people she meets and hers. His character is there to protect her when something shows up, this isn't dbz, no battle lasts more than 5 mins. Except from one minor antagonist added at the end of the story to give them a goal, everyone has something to tell, no one is just evil.

The only problem is that they used 3D for the background and creatures (they look really unsetting) and 2D cell shading for the characters. Netflix has been doing this with other animes (f.e.: Ajin and Godzilla), not sure if because it is easier or because they think it looks cool (it doesn't). Once you get into the story, you forget about the art (it only annoyed me the first 2 chapters, though I have seen other animes like this one so it wasn't that weird).

A movie is meant to entertain
24 August 2019
Maybe there was something artistic or deep in this movie, but I couldn't see it. It didn't feel original neither, just boring and too long.

I loved it
20 May 2019
I didn't put a 9 because I think the animated movies plots were better (well, the first one at least), but this one was entertaining and the CGI was awesome, though the inception thing was unnecesary.

A Quiet Place (2018)

It reminded me of Alien
17 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It didn't put a ten because it deserves an Oscar. I did it because I loved it.

Spoilers:

People complain about the stupid things the characters did, like the pregnancy. And I think it is a bad move because they already have children to protect. However, what do you expect? this people have no hope, no one will save them and they want to enjoy life instead of just spending the rest of their lives doing nothing because of the fear.

Also, to the person that complains about the lack of backstory, movies like Alien didn't have backstory either until the prequels. They just found the monster and it started killing them one by one.

Regarding the sacrifice, you don't take your time to evaluate all the options when the people you love is seconds to get killed.

The military part is tricky, it sounds strange they couldn't against the creatures, however we don't know how many creatures there are, there were just 3 here. We don't know if they have more ways to attack, how strong they are (they can break through the silo, they might be able to break through a tank or a bunker), nor if they can survive radiation or explosions. And we don't know if the military really lose or if the people in the movie just lost contact with the world.

The ending is not faulty as they say, the creature has an impenetrable armor but it is only in the outside and his mouth was open.

References everywhere
1 April 2018
I haven't read the book and I can understand the people who are disappointed with it. The story isn't mind blowing and the character's reactions are unrealistic.

However, the CGI and videogame references were awesome and that was the reason I went to see it. They definitely spared no expense.

Average
24 February 2018
I thought I would love this movie, but it was average. The trailers spoil everything, and the character's actions and clues make it too predictable (it might not be a bad thing though, it is not deus ex machina if you introduce it before you need it). I could tell the ending details like 10 minutes after it started, and so other stuff, but maybe that is my problem, I like movies where I don't see things coming, others don't care about it and enjoy it at the same level.

However, it was enjoyable and it has practical effects.

Disappointing
12 February 2018
I LOVE monster movies, and I've been looking for this movie for a while, but I couldn't find it because of Stephanie Meyer's movie with the same name. Finally, Netflix added it.

I really wanted to like it, but despite the other reviews, I've found the FX bad. The animation was amazing, but there was something odd and the monster seemed out of place, I think it was the texture. Maybe if it had some scales instead of polliwog skin (I guess that is what they wanted to achieve?) it would have looked better.

Anyway, that wouldn't have matter if the movie wasn't boring. I just didn't feel anything (except from the scene with the pictures). The tense moments didn't feel tense, or maybe it is just my love for monsters. And some parts were too slow. But I had already watched half of it so I had to finish.

However since there are people here that loved it so much, I suggest you to watch it, maybe you are one of them and pass a good time.

Death Note (I) (2017)
5/10
Different characters, different story
5 February 2018
This is the story about a guy named Light Turner, who happens to share Light Yagami's name. He is not a cold blooded psycho like Yagami - he is a kid with good intentions from the beginning to the end -, but he has a girlfriend for that. And this girl's name is not Misa, which is cool since she is an entirely different character.

Look at it as a spin off, another guy getting the death note, the only thing it has in common with the anime is names, the notebook and Ryuk (who is a bit more creepy). Remember that the manga, the anime, and the japanese live action had different endings? well, this one too. It is not a great movie, but at least you don't know wtf did they write.
