A Kind of Sisterhood (2015)
It's fascinating and moving to see these women, and hear them describe their world, treatment, ideas and friendships.
For the first time ever we hear first person recollections of Northern Ireland's women political prisoners. A woman who is a former hunger striker. One of the longest serving political women prisoners. The first woman to be interned without trial. The difficulties of reconciling motherhood with your political convictions, the importance of comradeship and solidarity at the most turbulent points of the North's recent history.
This film shows the power of documentary. It's fascinating and moving to see these women, and hear them describe their world, treatment, ideas and friendships. And how rare to see a film full of mostly working class women too. Revelatory.
H3 (2001)
One of the most important and authentic insights into the Irish Republican H Block protests
An authentic portrayal of a group of men and their reactions to the extraordinary circumstances they find themselves in. Having been imprisoned for their political beliefs, and as such seeing themselves as POW's, the British establishment force their 'criminalisation policy' on the young inmates. Their resistance to the system leads to life in cells with their own excrement smeared on walls, horrific mirror searches, regular beatings and the death of ten of their comrades on Hunger Strike. H3 (written by two ex-prisoners / one ex-hunger striker) is an important piece of Irish History, giving us insight into the dilemmas, claustrophobic conditions, strength of spirit and humanity of the inmates of H Block 3.
