Cougar Town (2009)
Good actors, but silly show, uncanny forced happiness, under misleading title.
The show takes that ultra happiness found in "Friends" and "Scrubs" and takes it to 1000. It is extremely boring and sugar coated. There is always someone ready with a guitar to sing one quick improvised tune about making a friend feel better. There are "bromances", to the point of being disgusting: A grown person skips work and spends a week's pay to arrange for an evening surprise, to make his (or her) friend feel a little better. The reason for the sadness? something silly or plain dumb.
I found Scrubs to be passable (because of great acting and atmosphere), I disliked Friends, but I respected both shows as great ones, for their aimed public. But this cougar town is almost offensive. The cracks and little jokes shared by the characters in the show are horrible.
Those who thought Christa Miller and Courtney Cox would be cougars in the town, missed. Those who expected a spin off of Friends or Scrubs, are getting only the silly part of the deal. Those who watched what would be a whole new show, saw good actors acting old school foolish.
24 Horas de Sexo Explícito (1985)
Three heroes, Ugly women, a gay judge, and a 24-hour trial of sex!
SPOILER ALERT - All information below is contained on the vidcap, but may be considered by some people as spoiler.
------------------8<------------------8<----------------8<---------- cut here
In a time where VCRs where rare in Brasil, and movies where available only in the theaters, the horror-trash king Jose Mojica Marins co-wrote and directed this masterpiece. The movie has a true and original plot, where three friends decide to bet on who is the best porn actor. After some interesting cuts about the life in Sao Paulo, Brasil, in the 80s, the three men "hire" a gay "unsuspicious" judge and start a plain "rodox" porn movie. The fun itself is in the details. The lines are hilarious, there are a lot of continuity goofs, the women are really ugly, and some innovations (for the time), like explicit commercials of actors, directors and a whole singing performance. The movie also claims to be the first to show bestiality, a female-dog (fake intercourse) and a male-horse (implicit intercourse).
It is a really funny cult movie, for those who do not expect to get aroused.
American Pie (1999)
Worthy after all
For people who rent a tape (or DVD) for fun, it is a great movie. I is tasteless, gross, it makes you laugh a lot, sometimes from good jokes and situations, sometimes from being nervous our grossed out.
Unfortunately, some people go see films like star wars (or trek) and come out from the theater commenting how some physics laws were broken, or if a laser saber can cut -or not- a steel post. Movies are for fun, the spectator is expected to be in the mood for the fun the film can offer. American Pie trilogy is a great comedy, with all we can expect: some good acting among an average cast, some intelligent jokes among the obvious, and very good role playing: One could quickly learn to like (or hate) the characters. Even the people who watched the movies on their releases (with 2-year intervals), would remember the roles and the history in the very first scenes. All three films are happy ending, cheerful and light, and worthy.
Dire Straits: On the Night (1993)
One of the best live performances seen
In this live show, the band surprises the audience in every song. Even playing "traditional" and well known songs, it took a while to recognize each song, because Dire Straits gave each song a new intro, with new instruments and themes. Although, they sound like recorded in a full fledged studio, the quality (and clarity) is outstanding.
I've never seen, any band sound so good live. Technically excellent, and musically touching and rewarding. It was delightful re-meet the dearest band, and the dear songs, in a completely new arrangement. The only downside is that the most famous song (Sultans of Swing-1977) is missing in the DVD and in the CD.
