Killer's Kiss (1955)
8/10
Brilliant Shots..Visually Engaging
11 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is like a low budget Citizen Kane. The story is very basic and novice, yet Kubrick is able to pull it off. Before CGI, this film is an example of what can be done.

For example, Davy looking inside the fish bowl is the highlight at the beginning before the boxing fight. Very well done!

Secondly, the shot of Davy in Gloria's room while she's asleep. He's looking in the mirror and with careful direction, we see her fast asleep in the mirror too!

Third, while Davy's talking to his uncle we see Gloria in the background on the window/mirror. Wonderfully done and an early trademark of Kubrick.

The movie itself was pretty much basic, but the visuals and presentation is engaging, even today! A little over an hour, the film is worth seeing.

The Losers (I) (2010)
9/10
Best time in ages!
4 August 2010
Thank god DC took the time to make this film. It's like an 80's remake of the A-Team. Pure fun, entertaining, and a wonderful escapism. Who cares if this film makes no sense..it doesn't. But it's so engaging and so over the top (but not cheesy!) that it works.

The Losers, unlike many comic book films, presents an original picture without the hype i.e. Batman, Spider-man, Star Trek etc. etc. So with a small budget and wonderful cast, the film in itself makes a great debut. Hopefully, if a sequel is made, the pressure of this film will not be affected!

When the film ended, I was disappointed. It wasn't long enough!! Definitely a film that can be watched numerous times. It's over before you know it. And yes, "MaX" was over the top but it paid off. Very good acting and execution. It did have its dramatic moments which did not go too soap opera and made the film worthwhile. So it took itself not too serious yet seriously at times. Great classic in the works!

Event Horizon (1997)
10/10
The best! Vivid Memories
8 May 2010
This film is a classic (seems strange saying that now!) and should be mentioned with such classics as The Shining and Alien. I believe this film blended the two aforementioned films and many others to come up with a very satisfying, original end product. I'm not a horror fan by any means, but this film and In the Mouth of Madness (which Sam Neil also starred in) always come to mind.

Very great entertainment. Event Horizon keeps you holding onto your seat until the very end. If you hate any sci-fi type movies and think that they're FAKE, don't underestimate this film. If you like horror films and would love for your girlfriend/wife/date to jump a little then you will love this! Either way you will be entertained! Just hope to play it off if you jump too at few scenes! If you're in the mood for a realistic, drama performance, this is not for you! if you're in the mood for an hour and a half escape to a foreboding and forbidden place, this is for you! Great fun and highly recommended!

Paramount ruined this film based on IV's success! FX was no IL&M! Character driven..this is of all the films!
10 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this film for the first time in '90 after purchasing it on VHS. And I loved it. I was a huge fan of the series even back then and thought it was a great entertaining movie.

The years have gone by and I have now watched all episodes of the original series and films. Of all the films, this one does contain the most interaction and involvement between ALL the cast members. True, some were for "laughs" (thanks to Paramount more than Shatner) but overall re-watching it again the one major thing lacking in the film is the BAD ENDING!! The story is not so bad until you watch it all the way to the end, and then it's like "ok, next!" Structure wise is one's the weakest! Please Keep these three things in mind (PERSONAL OPINION:) I think Gene was so upset with Paramount and the past when it came to Trek that he looked at TNG as a new beginning and ANYTHING that was made up to this point with the original cast (especially since Paramount booted him out of the films) would have been disapproved by him. Of course, if this film had made more $$$, then maybe he would have embraced it a little better with private reservations. Second, this film suffered the same fate as the later Batman films from the late 80's and 90's. The first two Batmans were good, but due to studio interference (Warner Bros.) the next two suffered! Some can be blamed on the director, some cannot! Lastly, the main characters of the original trek were always Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The others were always secondary..That is, to help move the stories along. Over time, however, these characters were loved and cherished also. So of course the film is going to focus more on the main rather than secondary characters.

The film reminds me of a season three episode re-done in the late 80's. Even though season 3 was not great, it did have some great moments and even the bad episodes can be watched ONLY from the performances and love of the characters/actors. That's what V is. A return to classic Trek. Not great, but fun. With no knowledge of Trek or love for it, of course this film was doomed to fail! At least II had a great villain and a death scene, III had a mystery of how to get spock back and the destruction of the beloved Enterprise and IV was just a fun time travel escapism. After this, Paramount pitted Shatner (who was to direct under contract) with greed and insistence that more humor than a dark or serious story be included. It was the success of IV that led to the downfall of V. Paramount wanted another action/comedy film based on the results of IV. However, in Voyage Home it worked. In a story like V, it did not! It was meant to be more of a darker, philosophical Trek than what was produced because of studio interference. Don't believe me? Check out some parts of the film which were very dramatic..

* The teaser before the credits really gets you in the mood. A laughing vulcan? very interesting.. * the Nimbus III meeting of the three races is pretty decent and a great opening. All three major aliens to that point (terrans, klingon, romulan!) are actually together and talking things out. Makes sense since the kligons and romulans were trading and the terrans (earth) were in peace negotiations with both. * Most of the campfire scenes with McCoy's statement of being on shore leave and spending time together with Shatner's "Other people have families, not us" is just so deep. I will say that DeForrest's performance through this picture is just great. * the wonderful meeting of Sybok trying to "seduce" the trilogy is the highlight with the young father of Spock, Sarek, declaring "So Human" and Shatner's "I need my pain!" speech topped by McCoy (DeForrest) wonderful scene with his father. The film was worth watching just for this..the best dramatic character driven scene of the original series. It shows the three characters have definitely aged and not just "making a movie." They have matured and stays cannon with the rest of the films. * Kirk's hatred for klingons is still apparent, but kept to a minimum. This is probably due more to Paramount than Shatner as he at least tried to emphasize it in a few scenes. * All the cast at least have something serious to do in this film as opposed to all the others! If this was all on Shatner, why did he even waste his time with even directing everybody else? Very considerate of others from my point of view. The scene with Chekov as Captain of the USS Enterprise trying to negotiate with Sybok was great!

Even though disappointing after the success of II-IV, not bad. Those were hard to top. Blame Paramount more than Shatner! He had the Trek idea in hand. VI was only made and successful because of the 25th Anniversary and the studio wanted the original to go out with a bang instead of a flop that THEY had made and knew it. Why Shatner was denied making a director's cut is beyond me! They'd rather put it all on him rather than themselves. Decent movie, just relax and enjoy.

Never watched the cartoon, loved the movie
9 March 2009
Note: I have never seen the cartoon series, although I know my step dad is fond of it. So I'm not sure how far this movie strayed away from the "magic" of the original cartoon. Makes me wonder if the new Star Trek film will make me love it or hate it since I'm a fan of the original.

This film was very entertaining and fun. I have never seen the 60's cartoon, but found this movie at a good deal ($5) and picked it up. I popped it in the old DVD player one Sunday afternoon and felt a little guilty and embarrassed. Why? Because this movie was so beyond kiddie. I'm watching a movie with a squirrel and a bull! And loving it.

Very over the top performances..but works very well in this format. I happened to watch Robocop 3 last night, and yes that was very over the top and became cheese! This film does it and succeeds. Robert Deniro does a wonderful job as he did in Dick Tracy. Sure, its no Casino or Heat! but he apparently understands the material and plays the role to fit the film. That's a good actor. No B-movie here. Shame this film is so trashed! Pure entertainment.

The Rocketeer (1991)

Remember watching this as a kid..Now it makes me feel like a kid in a good way!
9 March 2009
wow. I cannot believe it's been so long. I thought this movie was just great as a child. Now it's even better. Anyone who is too young for this film, however, if you enjoyed The Mummy and National Treasure you will love this flick! It's so classic. Guy loves girl, loses girl, finds "special power," girl meets bad guy, guy beats bad guy and reclaims girl. HHmmm..Sounds like a lot of movies. It's how they're executed that stands them apart. And this one is truly one of those times. Although no globe winner or academy winner by no means, this film does excel in entertainment. Even watching it today, it looks and feels just as good as it did when I watched it on VHS. It's like taking a B-movie idea (yes I know it has comic origins) and making it an A grade film. And it was helped along by Disney, which is surprising in those days. Black Cauldron wasn't released for years because it was "too violent." This film, however, had a lot going for it that was not exactly Disney standard.

Anyhow, if you're a fan of comic books or adventure, if you're looking for a film for the whole family or simply trying to escape the hardships of the world for a more simpler time and place, this one's for you. Highly recommend it!

This film is highly underrated!! Just 2 hours of R&R with this will refresh you!
9 March 2009
I do remember being in Walmart with my wife the week this film came out on DVD. I purchased it, thinking it would be a decent 2 hour event. When we sat down and watched it, I was just amazed. Definitely unique and one of a kind. It reminded me of how fresh Star Wars and Indiana Jones and even the Rocketeer film were when they were released. Great escapism at its peak. If you want a serious film in this genre (I call it art), check out Sin City. However, if you just want a fun 2 hours, this is for you.

The way this film was made just blows me away! And it will you too. Why? Not only does the film look good, the story, characters, pace and feel is just truly beyond words. The film has an innocence of nostalgia and adventure that will blow you away.

Even though this film might not be deep provoking such as Blade Runner, Sin City, The Dark Knight, Encounters of the Third Kind...It does feature the same fun feel in a fresh way to experiences such as Indiana Jones, Bond at its peak (opinions vary on this one, sorry), Superman, Batman, Legend, Blade etc.etc. If you got a high from any of these mentioned, this one's for you. 8 stars for a first time director who sacrificed for his vision..and it shows..technically wonderful..Story is just fun. Films such as the Spirit are probably more influenced by this than Sin City.
