Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005)
The BEST film if you know Amsterdam and Dutch people
Same H, New Lo. Thats its Tagline and that says it all. The films very low standard is what you like or what you don't like. People that are negative about this film should not go see another DB film, because you know what too expect.
This film has some stupid stuff in it like Rob Schneider saying that the Dutch started the slave trade which is untrue, but it's just one of those things about The Netherlands that are assumed and talked about as if true, and particularly about Amsterdam some preconceptions exist as well.
In DB: EG, Amsterdam comes across as the world capital of sleazyness and thats an image a lot of Americans have, but it's grossly exaggerated, just like anything else in this movie.
Some jokes were fine, some were poor, but Rob delivers just what you can expect when you've seen the first DB. So go see it if you like this kind of humour, and forget the negative reviews.
De dominee (2004)
Fire and forget
The brands in this film, like Suit Supply, take away from the story, cause it's supposed to be set in the eighties. It's not a very thrilling film. Also, the single from Intwine on the soundtrack is very bad, it has a chorus that is repeated numerous times', like "I'm a cruel man, I take it all away, I'm a cruel man I'm here to stay.." Jeeez couldn't those asswipes have come up with something better than that? I guess they wrote it in a couple of minutes..
It's really annoying, just like the product placement in this filmproduct, that cashes in on the controversy and publicity around a criminal who should not be a celebrity like he is now made out to be, but should be forgotten like rats ought to be.
Feestje (2004)
Garbage
This is a film that has not much going for it. The main actors are to old to play students. That is why they are totally unbelievable.
Antonie is a good actor, but here he is wasted. Chantal Janzen should give it up, just like that Beau van Erven Dorens guy. The film has similar story lines from other dutch films. Nothing is new, and the jokes are nothing special.
Only Daphne Bunskoek is fresh in this stale film.
This film was a disaster at the box office, cause it was produced for a rather large amount of money. On DVD it is worth a look , if you can watch it for free that is.
So Be It (2003)
Nice little indie film
This film was made for just about 13.000 euro. It's about four friends who are hired by criminals. But a lot happens that is not what they expected. And one of them tries to change their destiny, but does not know how.
It's a nice movie, with some mediocre, but also some nice humorous performances from sometimes well known actors that are in it, like boxing champion Regilio Tuur, Daan Schuurmans from Volle Maan, and Robin Rienstra from Onderweg naar morgen, Maureen du Toit from Hart van Nederland and Marian Mudder from Baantjer.
This film has it's flaws but hey, it's better then lots of other made for DVD trash.
Fighting Fish (2004)
Very nice first try at something different by Dutch film maker.
A very enjoyable film overall, as it is very different from the ones we normally see in Dutch cinema.
In the Netherlands, it's very difficult to get a project off the ground that is different. That is why it is very brave that this young film maker has tried to make a different film, knowing that he would not be comforted by the very rude critics in this small, filmwise totally insignificant little country.
Hopefully he gets the chance to do something abroad, because the visual style and beautiful musical score of this effort give me reason to believe that this mr.Aattache has a good feeling for making a low budget film look nice. My friends and I were happy to see that the Fighting Fish DVD was also very informative: more than 114 minutes of Bonus material!
Lets hope this is the start of more action films from the Netherlands, much better than the utter crap they usually produce, like "Costa", "Feestje" or more recently, "Ellis in Glamourland".
