Missed Opportunity
18 January 2023
The idea of a documentary about the cassette tape is a good one. I was all over this. What a shame. I was after a fast paced journey through its history - flashbacks to the 80s, the music from the time, the fashions, the famous people voxpops, fun little vinette reenactments, the inventor taking us through the design process and challenges - why there was a requirement for such a product, etc etc etc...

I got NONE of it! Not one insight could I had not formulated myself. And the pace! Cassette tapes are a youth product, imbued with love, energy, passion. This doco seemed to be more concerned about examining the the theme of nostalgia, whilst at the same time failing to invoke any such emotion in the hearts of its audience.

They clearly had no budget for a soundtrack or access the big names, but even so. There was an opportunity the carve of a diamond and they failed.

Uninspired and very dull. Give it a miss. Unlike the classic cassette tape.

Seat of your pants film making, bought to life. A celebration of creativity.

Why is nobody reviewing this?

What a wonderful account of the making of Star Wars. In-depth, with humour and lots of character. It's a fun ride, go with it people.

There's a brilliant YouTube vid called "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" - well worth a watch. Here we get all that, meaning how Marcia Lucas single-handedly saved everyone's arses and created a the legend, and so much more...

It's fascinating how this epic could have so easily been a flop without the skill, bravery, balls and raw talent of everyone involved. The film industry used to be an incredible place to be. I miss those days so much.

Monster of the deep.

Warning: Spoilers
I've no idea what the complaints are about, looking the the reviews. It's seems most of the disappointment is levelled at the movie not being as a good as other docs they've seen on this subject. This tale is unique in several disturbing ways. The makers of the documentary set out to record a team of wannabe amateur engineers build a 'spacecraft". Instead, in retrospect they were recording the planning and execution of an appalling murder of an innocent woman. What you watch in this film, turned out to be Exhibit 'A' in the trial and was the main reason this creep was eventually put away. We see the team go from supportive disbelief to shock, to the acceptance that a good friend was an unimaginable monster.

Highly recommended.

RIP, Kim Wall. X.

Mayhem with a heart

I was dreading this movie as I do with all sequels to movies I like. But I had needn't have worried, BSM was a joy from start to finish. The laughter invariably came through gritted teeth, clenched fists and pure dread.

There was plenty of the usual Borat gross-out stuff, coming in both physical and moral forms but what surprised was there was genuine heart of the film...

Enter... Maria Bakalova. Wow. I fell in love with her character in the first five mins. Her intensity and commitment never lets up... Her performance is beyond words... hilarious, terrifying and heart-breakingly enchanting throughout.

But what an all round team effort - putting this together would have been a logistical nightmare. Respect to Sacha Baron Cohen for noticing talent when he sees it and being generous enough to give over screen time to Bakalova.

It's a really is a brilliant sweet movie.

Enjoy.

Lock, Stock and Two Missing Fundamentals - Humour and plot.

This movie so wanted to hang out with the big boys... But got it all wrong. You see the Scorsese references come and go as subtle as a clown appearing in a spotlight wearing a large oversized pair beeping shoes. Dialogue? Ignore it... if you can stay awake - it's just veneer. It's dialogue emulating dialogue that the dialogue heard once in a really good movie with good dialogue. Imagine how a of gangster movie fanboy might fantasise how he really "sort out the baddies"... and you're only halfway there.

These poor actors made up for a lack of coherent script with an generous oversupply of incoherent shouting.

Daniel (charisma vacuum) Craig didn't disappoint - pretty sure his lack of all vital signs in this try-hard nonsense won him his Bond role.

Enjoy!

More document than documentary.
7 October 2020
Shot through the hand held technology of the day we see how the horrific events of 9/11 played out - not through the spectacle but through the raw reactions of eye witnesses. This account will stand the test of time way past the conspiracies and politics are over. It just asks 'where were you? how did you feel at the moment the world changed forever.'

Never under estimate the power of witnessing people witnessing history defining events.

Big concept with a big heart.
26 January 2020
The concept at the heart of this episode is just beautiful. There's a symmetry in 'Total Rickall' that distinguishes from all the rest.

It's a simple idea the get's stretched and stretched ludicrously, ending in a highly satisfying conclusion.

Personally, for me it's the best of the best. It has the usual crazy ideas, lots of violence and a shed load of irony...

But it also celebrates 'family' without really saying it.

10/10 mofos!!! x

Miserable and unrewarding... Plenty of black - very little comedy.

Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this. Yes, Gleeson was amazing - luckily he has broad shoulders as he had to carry this over-hyped dismal little experience all on his own.

Where were the characters? We were subjected to a series of one-to-ones with Father James Lavelle. Each one more miserable than the last. Most of the characters were selfish, vile, pitiful, nihilistic and badly drawn. Worst of all none of them were interesting. They barely communicated with each other through the whole movie so the entire plot was told through Gleesons character who is in pretty much every scene. There was no character development apart a small revelation at the end. The story and plotting is as about as linear as it gets - !!!spoiler!!! Man is threatened with murder - man is murdered by the guy who threatened him.!spoiler end! yep. THat was it.

I usually fall on the side of the critics opinions with most movies but I'm really beginning to think there's something I'm missing. I understood the themes of retribution, reconciliation etc. And yes, the catholic church has a hell of lot to answer for. However, the whole thing was delivered with such little originality or finesse I found it hard to care for or engage with most of it. I'm happy to be convinced otherwise and might watch it again. But the first experience were so underwhelming I'll struggle.
