Stealing God (2005)
Odd that the movie makes fun of bad movies.....
Apologies to the writer/lead actor. He is VERY attractive and reasonably charming. I think if given a decent chance, could be a good actor. And SOME of the writing he did for this movie is pretty good. Witty at times, but at others PAINFULLY bad. This movie has a scene where they make fun of a badly made "filmed on Video" movie. Maybe it was intentional, but this movie looks like it was filmed on SonyDVDCam, the production values were "Porn" like. Bad lighting, boring sets, and overall, just BORING. The premise of the film is a cute idea, but fairly poorly developed. They do two REALLY bad episodes of their program to get "Pledges" and suddenly they can afford a mansion and porches? I think maybe something got edited for time. Either, way, I gave up at what I HOPE was better than halfway (it felt like an eternity). I would really not suggest even bothering to rent/buy/steal this movie. I will give it to the Mr Eisenger, it's a better written and acted movie than I could make at home, but then, it still looks like a movie he made at home. Clever premise, badly done, acting was atrocious for all actors and in most scenes. TRUE STINKER.
Space Battleship Yamato (1979)
High Drama!! Decent Animation
At 12 years old, i WORSHIPPED this show. The plot was deep and interesting. I can, to this day, still sing the theme song. Very few of my friends recall this show. But, it was wonderful. I long for the day someone revives it. There was no greater excitement than when they finally reached Iscandar to save the earth.
I spent hours drawing my own battleship based space ships. This show was inspiring and beautiful. The characters were three dimensional and you cared what happened to them. I loved the discovery of the wrecked battleship and the process of turning it into a space ship. The love story was fun as well. I was truly upset by the result when they finally reached their goal. I wish this series had carried on. Sadly, at 13, it just seemed to disappear. I have never seen it broadcast since. But, Star Blazers was the highlight of my afternoons when i was a kid. A great TV show, that I would love to see released on DVD. If you own this show, PLEASE RELEASE IT ON DVD!!! There are a LOT of closet fans out there. We are ready to pay $39.95 for the complete collection.
If you can get hold of a copy, WATCH IT! (and tell me where you found it!) This is "Japan-imation" at it's best.
The Poseidon Adventure (2005)
Drown Already!!!!
OK, so Irwin Allen HIMSELF would call this one a stinker. I have seen better developed characters on Sylvan Learning Center commercials. I mean, who wrote this?? AND WHY?? Now, the original, for its time, was FUN!! Everyone was into the disaster movies (See the Irwin Allen comment). But, this one. First of all, did anyone ever figure out WHY they bombed the ship? Was I sleeping or did I TiVo right past it? It was good to see them "Dredge Up" some old faves from the 80's. I always wondered what happened to "C. Thomas Howell" and "Steve Guttenberg". I mean, Police Academy movies at least made you laugh.
I love the scene at the end, where they are at the hull, trying to get out and they set this "Bomb" made from a keg of beer. This same bomb was so strong it cause the ship to sink, and now they set it to blow a hole in the hull. and the warning "Stand back at least 20 feet, that should be safe!" WOW!!! SOME BOMB!! The effects were VERY cruddy. I have seen better set design on "Saved by the Bell". And better ACTING!! I think the MOST offensive was the poor old woman who got to be Mrs Rosen, you know "The Shelly Winters Role". Well, she was VERY stereotypically "Jewish" to the point where it was almost disgusting. Granted, Shelly was too back in the day, but that was 1972. And she WAS Jewish.
As the other reviewers have stated. There was NO suspense. The capsizing made NO logical sense. (Not that physics HAS to play a role in a disaster flick). And the performances were as best as could be expected. I think I REALLY have to blame the writers. I mean, all of these people have put in GREAT performances in OTHER movies. But, like the S.S. Poseidon, this one was doomed from the start. THANK GOD WE Don't HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO A REMAKE OF THE SEQUEL!!!! This does not bode well for the upcoming Kurt Russell "Blockbuster" due next spring. "Poseidon" has more money behind it, but how many ways can you escape from a sinking ship? In this case, I wanted to be one of the passengers who drowned early in the film. "TELL MY FAMILY I LOVE THEM, and I'm SORRY I AGREED TO BE IN THIS PILE OF EXCREMENT!!" Now for a moment of silence for all those lost to BAD WRITING..........
Edge of Seventeen (1998)
A Story for the rest of us.
Can't relate to Sixteen Candles? or Pretty In Pink? Well, here is your movie. A bit racier than a John Hughes film, but more REAL. No dream hunks (Michael Schoeffling mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm), no grand gestures, and no wacky sidekicks.
Sure, the characters are a bit "stereotypical", but remember back to when you first came out, didn't they all seem like stereotypes? Weren't the only people you KNEW were gay the ones that were OBVIOUSLY gay?
This movie captures the angst and the uncertainty perfectly. And those of us who were in high school then, we can relate to how hard being labeled the "Queer" was.
These kids all do a great job of acting these parts. Awkward girl with a crush on a gay guy, gay guy trying to figure out why he isn't straight, and the cast of other "Misfits" who befriend the gay guy and show him the "ropes". Don't forget the predatory gay men who take advantage, and the Mother who just wants to "understand" and be there for him.
If you were ever a teenager coming to terms with who you are, this movie will speak to you. Like they have read your mind. I don't think enough honor has been paid to whomever wrote this movie. I am amazed to see someone hit the nail that directly on the head.
Worth the watch for any gay person (especially boys). You are not alone!!
