The Strays (2023)
Every bit as uncomfortable as it was meant to be
I don't want to give too much away but I feel this was an effective film. It was an uncomfortable watch but I feel like that is the point. The main character I CAN sympathise with in some way but she basically reminded me of some of the worst snobs I've ever met. Those who come from poor backgrounds, work their way up then pathologically shun and mock others from their background in an effort to prove they are "better than that".
I wouldn't want to watch it again and a bit more background wouldn't go amiss but it is really not as terrible as others are saying.
If you like twists then give this a go.
Prey (2021)
6.5 stars
I feel this film is getting a little more hate than it deserves.... People have been questioning the motives of the killer but I found it quite clear. The characters aren't all likeable but I don't feel like it takes away from the film. The pace is good, you have a chance to see the rivalries and loyalties of the group play out.
There is a twist, which is fairly predictable but still entertaining.
I all in all found this quite entertaining. The lead actor was very handsome and likeable, the acting was good, the mix of different characters and the interactions were interesting. I can relate to when you are friends with different people so assume other people you like will all like each other. Doesn't always work out.
Give this a try.
Ostatnia wieczerza (2022)
Enjoyable slow burn
This is a very good, enjoyable slow burn horror film. It starts off with an action sequence to get you going then takes you 30 years into the future to the 80s where we follow an under cover copper into a monastery. He is investigating the disappearance of some young women in the area so enters the monastery to observe the goings on inside.
The acting is very good, the atmosphere and suspense are fantastic, it feels claustrophobic. The special effects are pretty good too.
I would recommend this if you enjoy a creepy horror, that creeps up on you while you are taking in the details. It is a Polish film but has English subtitles, don't let that out you off.
No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
Don't expect a direct adaptation
This is almost a bog standard scary film. It bears only the vaguest of resemblences to the excellent source material. The location, main character circumstances and nationality, the monster..... Everything is different. I'm confused at how this can even be claimed to be based on the book. I wasn't expecting everything to be portrayed on film but I just feel like this was a cash grab. Sorry, loved the book, loved The Ritual, book and film which is also by this author, but this film is a let down!
If you want to numb your brain with a formulaic horror film then crack on - I'm afraid I wasn't impressed.
Searching (2018)
Pleasantly surprised with what can seem like a gimmicky
I decided to watch this as I like John Cho. I'm glad I didn't know it was completely filmed via online posts and activity. I wouldn't have watched it, but it was actually really engaging.
John Cho and Debra Messing are really good in this. I particularly enjoyed Debra's performance. The supporting cast is good too.
The dad apparently doing so much of the detective work seems unrealistic but helps with the format. It also makes more sense later on in the film....
I don't want to give too much away but I would recommend this if you enjoy mystery, drama and a bit of cat and mouse. The first few minutes are sweet too.
The Good Neighbor (2016)
Better than I expected
The summary sounded interesting so I gave it a go, expecting to just kill some time.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. It isn't a straight up horror. It is more like a psychological drama which has you guessing what the end result is. You get hints along way with cuts to a courtroom which don't make it clear who did what, just that SOMETHING happened and it is serious.
I feel like this film is a portrayal of how bullying progresses.... Someone is a little different, they attract interest and curiosity, someone thinks it would be funny to play a little prank on them, they justify their horrible behaviour with excuses of it being "just a laugh", with rumours and heresy so anybody else can be convinced that they kind of deserve it.... Then there is the outcome, where the whole picture becomes clear and people are scrabbling around to either blame or excuse things.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Don't do drugs kids!
Don't do drugs grandma! 4 addicts: two young friends and one of the friend's girl from an upstanding family that is losing patience are taking street drugs. The mother of one of the friends wants to lose weight so gets some weight loss pills prescribed by the world's most self absorbed doctor. How will it all turn out?
A hard but gripping watch... You should watch this once but if you get through it you are unlikely going to want to watch it again.
10/10.
Unsolved Mysteries: Missing Witness (2020)
Not all mums deserve the title
This awful woman sounds like the US' answer to the UK's Rose West. What a selfish, money and sex driven woman. When I say money I refer to the fact that apparently she was still living on McCullough's farm after allegedly killing him. Unfortunately cold, selfish mothers like this do exist and I'm sure many can relate to the poor sisters in this episode, even if their situations aren't exactly the same.
I'm glad that for a short time at least the girls had positive male influences in the form of their step dads/uncles.
Us (2019)
Spoilers - interesting movie
What I got from this movie was a nature vs nurture question. Adelaide turns out to be the Tethered, whilst Red is the true person who was attacked and swapped with Red. Grown up Adelaide appears to be a normal, functioning human being who is a good wife and mother. Red is a violent, twisted being. Would the real Adelaide have grown up to be like this with her parent's influence? Would the real Red have been a gentle Tethered whilst stuck in the underground if she had never known what she was missing out on? Also, each of the kids is half tethered, half human... Where does that leave them?
Another poster questioned how Adelaide didn't remember that she was the Tethered if the reason she wasn't speaking was because she didn't know how, not because of the trauma of getting lost. Compared to her new life of love, security and warmth her old life would have been a trauma so it would make sense for her to block this out as she grows and embraces her new life. Kids are known for being adaptable.
All in all, this is a good movie, very interesting and leaves questions unanswered which adds to the experience in my opinion.
The Twilight Zone: Cavender Is Coming (1962)
My favourite episode
This is my favourite episode. Miss Grep is adorable as the clumsy, unemployed woman who is sent an angel to improve her lot.
This is quite different from the "usual" (for want of a better word) TZ, I love The Twilight Zone but as different as this is I love it. The main character is hilarious and likeable. This episode is more funny than out-there but is definitely my favourite.
Midsommar (2019)
A slow burn with a big ending
Don't be put off by the slow start. This definitely builds up to a finale which is worth the wait.
It starts off feeling very claustrophobic and uncomfortable with the neediness of Dani being all consuming. Her boyfriend, Christian's, friends clearly find her a drag and want him to dump her so they don't seem too pleased when he invites her along for the boys trip to Sweden.
Once the group arrive in their friend Pelle's home village they find they are in a different environment to what they are used to.
This is an interesting film with some gruesome scenes and, as said before, a slow burn start but it sure does build up so stick with it.
The Woman (2011)
Wholesome American family
I decided to give this a try as I've seen Pollyanna McIntosh in Let Us Prey and really enjoyed it. This film starts off with the All American family, mum, dad, teen boy and girl and a cute little girl. They are not as wholesome as they seem. The dad finding a savage from a tribe, capturing her then keeping her captive in order to "civilise" her is a dead give away. The more you watch this family the more the savage seems to be the more civilised. Surprisingly good, even though I'm not a fan of gore usually. There is a fair bit of that.
Life on Mars: Episode #1.8 (2006)
Worst episode in a great programme
I can accept time travel and the blonde girl coming out of the telly but Sam "the hypocrite" Tyler with his daft lad naivety and blindness in this episode (s1e8) NOT resulting in every single copper on the force baying for his blood I cannot understand. He really makes me want to put my foot through the telly. Apart from that it's a fantastic programme. Let's face it, we all watch it for Gene Hunt anyway.
Little Boy Blue (2017)
Heart breaking RIP Rhys.
I remember when Rhys was shot, the incident this drama is about, and it was an awful event and anybody who was aware of the case at the time will have no surprises with this drama. There was plenty of controversy over the whole event from poor Rhys' death, his family's strength, the age of the killers and the frustrating and seemingly all encompassing hurdle of getting witnesses to "grass".
All of the above is covered sensitively and, with the Jones' giving their input to this drama, a fair degree of accuracy too. You obviously feel for the victim and his family but this drama also shines a light on peer pressure, the difficulty of getting someone to agree to be a witness due to the stigma and dangers of being a " grass" and the shameful enabling and apathetic attitude of some of the suspects' parents.
Whether someone is aware of the case or not this is an interesting, gripping and emotive drama. You can't watch this and leave it not feeling anything. Utterly heartbreaking.
RIP Rhys Jones.
