Mission Impossible back on form.
10 May 2006
I loved the first movie and enjoyed the second. The third has perfectly bridged the gap between the plot driven first and its action oriented sequel. The action, as expected was first class, with some incredible stunt-work and set-pieces. The opening scene shows some of Cruise's best acting in my memory and is one of the highlights of a fine film. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a fantastic villain for the piece, probably the best performance in the film. One criticism I have is the lack of development of some of the supporting cast, particularly Cruise's IMF team, who with the exception of the returning Ving Rhames we no next to nothing about the team. This is only a small concern and the heavy action makes up for some of these niggles. I felt the end was poorly conceived compared to the rest of the movie and was a disappointment. Overall I thought this was a cracking film and despite the flaws it is, in my opinion, the best film of the 3. Definitely worth a watch, I will be getting the DVD when it comes out.

The greatest musical ever
6 October 2005
Great songs, great cast, great cameos. This movie has everything.

Musicals usually have 2 major flaws, the music dates and the songs always seem forced. This is not true in the Blues Brothers, as the songs still sound fantastic 25 years on and the songs naturally fit into the story and are part of the plot rather than set-pieces. The film is hilariously funny and there is a natural chemistry between John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd that makes their roles as near perfect as possible.

The car chase and subsequent crashes are among the most impressive that I can remember and the supporting cast offer up some great songs, most notably in my opinion Ray Charles.

I would include this in my top 10 films ever, and as someone who normally hates musicals with a vengeance, that says a lot.

There are much worse films than this.
6 October 2005
It takes guts to make a sequel to a movie after 20 years, especially after the original has become a legend and the star has died since.

However this movie does a lot of things right and frankly, even if it had been perfect, some people would hate it anyway. The film suffers from not having John Belushi, but John Goodman puts in a good effort, and I for one was surprised at the quality of his singing. James Brown and Aretha Franklin reprise their guest roles. The music is not as good as the original but still better than most music in the charts these days.

The humour from the original is here but it is not as funny as the original. In fact all elements from the original are here in slightly inferior forms, with the exception of the car chase, which is better.

To be honest, it is worth seeing this film just to see how all the band has aged. i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Blues music, though fans of the original may be disappointed

Not bad, the first 2 are better
6 October 2005
If you decide to watch Blade Trinity, try to keep the first 2 out of your mind. Despite some of the opinions that have been expressed, I would argue that BLADE TRINITY IS NOT A BAD FILM. It fails to I've up to the hype of the originals but in itself it is not a bad film.

That said, it does have its flaws. Like Blade 2, giving Blade allies draws attention away from him and working with others is not in Blades character. In the original Blade is a loner, taking on hordes of Vampires single handed, now he has allies with him who frankly dilute the action. Despite this, the Nightstalkers are generally good characters, and a movie of their own could be entertaining, they just don't fit in with Blade.

Also, there is not enough contact between Blade and the enemy. In the first 2 films Blade encounters his enemy repeatedly during the film in a buildup to the final battle, generating atmosphere. In Trinity this does not happen.

Despite my emphasis on the bad points of the movie, I did enjoy this enough to buy the DVD and it is a good film. It could be improved by splitting it in 2, a Blade movie and a Nightstalkers movie.

Blade II (2002)

great but I preferred the original.
6 October 2005
This is a great movie, and I really enjoyed it. To pick between this and the original is a tough decision, but I would have to side with the original. This is because despite the action sequences being fantastic the film lets itself down on 2 fronts for me.

1 - Despite being a good character, Nomak is not in the same league as Deacon Frost in the original. The fact that Blade is given only a weak reason to fight Nomak means that there is none of the chemistry or intensity to the battles that the original had.

2 - The introduction of the Blood Pack draws attention away from Blade. This is not good, we paid the admission fee so we could see Blade kicking some suckhead ass, not a bunch of vampires.

Despite this, the film is fantastic and only slightly worse than the original. it is still an essential purchase for any action fan.

Blade (1998)

Great Vampire movie
6 October 2005
This is one of those rare comic-book movies that really works. In many, the fairly one dimensional characters just seem poorly written, but in Blade, with the heavy duty action and thumping techno soundtrack, it just seems to work.

Blade is one of the great underrated characters in Marvel comics, and Wesley Snipes brings him to life and plays the role with such gusto that he really makes the part his own, to the extent that I really cannot imagine anybody else in that role. Blade is one of those great anti-heroes that makes you feel that maybe you shouldn't be rooting for him, but you cannot help doing so anyway. Without giving anything away, I think that the opening scene is one of the greatest character introductions ever.

Unusually for a comic-book movie, the characters and plot manage to hold together until the end and I for one, after seeing it for the first time on TV, immediately bought the DVD.

Blade is a fast action thriller that never lets up. I loved this movie and I would argue that it's better than either of its sequels.

Not bad but the original is better
6 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not usually a fan of sequels but this is one of the few that I enjoy. It's not as good as the original, but then, nothing is. Too many of the jokes are taken from the original but there are still some good ones here. One of my favourite gags is when Captain Oveur is trying to shut down the computer, this scene manages to spoof 2001 and Peter Graves' role in the Mission Impossible TV series simultaneously. The shift to a space setting allows for the sequel to spoof a few sci-fi classics as well, including the scrolling text opening from Star Wars. This film also contains one of the rarest things in the world, a performance from William Shatner that doesn't make you want to punch him! He plays his role with gusto and there is a great moment when he looks through the periscope and sees the Starship Enterprise.

Overall I would describe this as a good movie, but it's probably not a good idea to compare it to the original or you will be disappointed.

The Animatrix (2003)

If you don't like The Matrix leave now
6 October 2005
I personally enjoyed the Animatrix, as a fan of the Matrix. However, if you do not enjoy the Matrix this really will not be for you.

The stories vary in style as each is made by a different director, including some of Japan's best known animé directors. However do not fear, as the Wachowski brothers had a hand in each of them, making sure they do not stray from the theme.

The quality of the stories does vary, from the brilliant to the average. "Final flight of the Osiris" in particular is worthy of mention, it's computer generated graphics are fantastic and its story is linked to that in the second film.

However, despite the good points, I probably would not have bought The Animatrix had it not come as part of the Matrix box set I bought. The stories are interesting, but by no means necessary to enjoy the films.

Airplane! (1980)
10/10
The funniest movie ever? Yes
6 October 2005
Very rarely does a film come out that is as truly brilliant as Airplane. It has everything that a comedy should have. The cast is fantastic, the jokes hilarious and almost constant.

One of the best things about Airplane that I have found is that the jokes are not all obvious, and because of this it has far more re-watchability than most comedies, as every time you watch it you pick up on more of the subtler jokes and background sight gags.

It is a film that manages to cater for almost all tastes in humour, from dry wit to slapstick via spoofery and dark humour. If you haven't seen this film you MUST watch it. This is one of those few films that everybody can enjoy. It's fairly rare to find a comedy the whole family can enjoy, most are either unsuitable for children or too childish for adults, but Airplane manages to find that balance where all ages can enjoy it.

In conclusion, if you have yet to see this film, watch it. If you have seen it, watch it again.
