There Will Be Blood (2007)
Why is it so hard for people to really understand?
As a film connoisseur i enjoy films ranging from emotionally challenging to something you don't have to think about. Now I saw There will be Blood Twice, because i felt i missed certain things the first go around. I was correct, some of the shots are the most visually pleasing in years. The acting which is of the highest caliber, the highest,is also smart and engaging. What Paul Thomas Anderson is trying to show us here is that everyone is fundamentally a bastard and even his bible references were as amazing as they have ever been, Eli's father being named Able and the way it's played out is reminiscent of Cane and Abel from the bible, and having the number 612 on almost every train, which is a psalm in the bible about a wolf in sheep's clothing. The direction in this movie is near flawless, and the soundtrack done wonderfully by Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood is flawless. If people want to say Paul Thomas Anderson is a hack let them, but he's made a career out of great film, he's on the level of Scorsese and Wes Anderson and far surpasses Altman because i know people love Altman over Anderson. The fact is the man made the best movie of the year, and it's arguably the best movie of this decade so far, and before you judge it read the book, READ THE BOOK.
Extras (2005)
A great idea, and a sense of self
OK , i'm going to start by saying this is the greatest show Hbo has ever put on, and one of the greatest the BBC has ever green-lit. The second season of Extras seems to be a more serious aspect of the show, the first season was a lot of underhanded dry humor and relied heavily on the humor as a whole. Though the second season has this undercurrent of tragedy to it, showing how Gervais's character transforms his ideals and his attitudes to that of a prickish actor. Though he can't seem to catch a break, whether it be the people he surrounds himself with or his general hate of his work and what he has become, and i just watched the second season finale and i must say Welcome back to Robert Deniro, by far the funniest guest appearance of the season, he did so much with so little, to bring Deniro back so that he can ogle a naked woman on a pen take the pen and lead you to believe that he will go home and masturbate to it as everyone did in the episode is quite brilliant. I hope Gervais turns out more of the seriousness next season as i think it fits the character. Cheers.
For Your Consideration (2006)
Well, not every movie is going to be A mighty Wind
Well, Let me start off by saying that Fred Willard again is the funniest actor in this Christopher guest piece. But the movie falls flat, i saw it last night at 1230 in the morning in times square with a friend, maybe i need to see it with more people in the theater. I thought Eugene Levy was very funny, Ricky Gervais was not needed at all, he almost took away from the movie. I would have liked a little more Christopher Guest in this one then we saw. I mean some parts were very funny, but the humor sort of droned itself out. I do not think Guest's material is becoming tired, though i think the movie within a movie has been done to death. The "Jewishness" of the movie is hilarious, this is a rental at best. I laughed a couple of times but if you want classic Guest then find his previous three films as they are all gems.
Love Liza (2002)
One Man carries a film as well as a soundtrack
Love Liza is a brilliant study into the mind of a man who seemingly had everything in life, a good career, a house and a wife who he loved. Hoffmans portrayal of a man driven over the edge by his wife's suicide. Hoffman struggles with addiction and pain throughout the movie, he carried this film, the writing i thought was amazing, the direction was not that great, but the effort was there.
Now with that said let's move to probably the greatest soundtrack i've ever heard, Jim O Rourke who i am a huge huge fan of gave this movie more life then it had, he put songs from his four albums on there and they just captivated me even more, his lyrics are poetry, his guitar playing again is poetry, and after meeting him many times, the man is exactly like his lyrics and music, weird and beautiful and also a bit out of his mind, songs like "Movie on the way down" and "Get a room" make this such a command movie, its one of my favorites and will continue to be for a very long time.
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
Not an amazing film, But well done
Dafoe is great in this film, I'll start off by saying that, But the whole complexity of Murnau is not shown, It's not shown that he was a closet homosexual, It's implied though, Malkovich was just boring as the legendary director, The makeup in this film was flawless, Dafoe was Schreck in every way, He saved the film from being utterly bad. The whole effect of this film was well done,Schrek died mysteriously as well, I wish they would make a move surrounding Schrek and not Orlok, A movie about schrek even if it was a documentary would be very very interesting. I think Nosferatu is one of the most beautiful complex movies ever made and it was made this way by the star Max Schrek and his mystique.
Bottle Rocket (1996)
One of the finest movies ever made
This movie invokes what comedy should be. Its witty and irreverent and just something completely outstanding. It shows that Wes Anderson is a complete genius and its hard to mistake a lot of his work cause its all essentially written in his way. Luke Wilson is brilliant and even though i do not like Owen Wilson as an actor in The two Wes Anderson movies hes been in hes be utterly flawless. This movie is a complete gem and i loved every second of it. I look for movies like Bottle Rocket but its very rare to find one this cynical and this amazing. Everything about it was perfection. From the script to the actions of the characters. Robert Musgrave who made his film debut in this movie is very likable. And the extras that Wes Anderson uses in all his movies are as unforgettable as the movies themselves. Thank you Wes for making such an impact with three great movies.
