Conan the Barbarian (2011)
After good start big disappointment
The world of Conan is one of the few fantasy worlds I like. Comic books and old Arnie movies are great some spin off/ clone movies are also really entertaining and good (cheesy yes).
This movie after solid start loses the plot really fast. Almost everything feels more or less off. Dialogue, pacing, direction and acting are poorly done. Atmosphere disappears after Jason Momoa comes to screen. He looks roght for the part, but he surely can't act it. Script doesn't make any sense and after hour it just doesn't keep me involved.
I think this one line sums up the movie:
Conan: I live, I love, I slay, and I am content.
Laughed so hard. Wasted potential.
W (2022)
High concept, mediocre implementation
Art movie with good ideas/ themes, but mediocre execution.
For me in this kind of movie the cinematography should be top notch. Plot is minimal and there's not that much of dialogue either. So camera work and sound design is the most important aspect
And for me at least camera work falls short. Sound design was good and at some moments excellent.
Actors and director do a good job, but I think this concept of a movie should have been much shorter. Or there should have been more to the story.
Anna Eriksson clearly did give all to this project being writer, director and acting the main role. But for me this movie felt like big budget student film. Maybe with better camera work and better pacing this could be good. Maybe even excellent?
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Epic start scene with mediocre story
This movie is in technical perspective really well made. Shooting has impact, looks realistic and has grittiness. Explosions look and feel like they should. They destroy vehicles and decimate people.
How things are filmed over all is top notch and showing the ugliness (blood and guts) of war was a good choice. Sound design is really well made also. Most of the effects stand the test of time (couple of shots look bit awkward maybe I should get the 4k and check is it just because of streaming).
Acting is as good as it gets. Everyone gives a.magnificent performance and the casting is done superbly.
Props and wardrobes are best in business.
So why only 7?
Well the way this story is told makes me feel that this is pro war movie. It has the grittiness and feel of loss that makes it look like anti war movie. But it has that "those are the bad guys and we are the good guys" thing that is used the way that we get heroes in the end. Also making army "look good and care about their own" by saving the last siblings. After watching this movie again it dropped from 9 stars to 7 stars. Maybe the about 15 years has matured me so that I can't see war with heroes?
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Big miss from Snyder
I really wanted to like this, but too many things went wrong from the get go. I'm not a Star Wars fanboy, but I do like the original trilogy. I really like some of those cheezy Star Wars clones/ ripoffs from the 70's and 80's. I really like low and big budget sci-fi movies from all eras. That being said.
There's something wrong with the script and screenplay of this movie. Through out the movie it is telling what is what and not showing. And it makes this feel sluggish and boring. Witch is weird because it's a sci-fi action movie that is quite fast paced (even with all that slow motion). It also feels that scenes are just slap together.
Characters don't have enough time to make their mark and that makes them meaningles. It's hard to feel for loss if you have no connection to the character.
I can't tell if the actors are just wrongly casted or is the director really not up for it? Dialogue delivery is flat and actors are posing in "cool postures". Lead actress is frowning almost all the time and it feels weird.
I also think it looks good at some occasions but effects are over used in many places. Things like lens flare and shallow depth of field. One thing about the shallow depth of field is that it looks like it is done at the post production. It is not filmed like that. Cgi is mostly good, but there are places and scenes where they should have try to make designs better.
If you are a sci-fi movie fan go and watch it. Wouldn't recommend it for others.
The Creator (2023)
Visually great. That's about it.
Industrial light and magic have done an excellent job. Also other departments that have done visuals to this movie. Some of the vehicles, weapons etc didn't fit that well to the futuristic style, but that didn't bother too much.
Sound department was quite solid, but ovely done here and there. But nothing too bad.
But yeah. This movie feels like that it doesn't have script. It jumps from situation to next without any rythm. Often it felt like there was no director. Acting went from poor to decent, but those who were decent didn't give much to the super slim story.
I'm somewhat annoyed that they had huge resources to do a good or excellent film, but came out with this. (I really hope it was butchered by studio and we can see the "real version" some day.
Prey (2022)
Missed opportunity
Premise is good and acting is ok. That's about all good in this movie.
CGI looks bad/ cheap and I can't understand why it is used so much. Action sequences make no sense and look often quite stupid.
Writing a good scripts are super hard for disney at the moment. Start of the movie is ok, but quite fast it falls apart.
It's established that the main protagonist can't hunt even though she is superb with throwing axe. Also her decision making is bad and she is trying to prove a point and that surpasses everything else. This point proving kills every hunter in the tribe, but that is ok becouse in the end she does prove her point. I really hate to use "plot armour" phrase, but I can't think of anything else to describe what happens in this movie. Main protagonist should have died like 4 or 5 times before the midpoint of the movie. But doesn't becouse "why not".
Use your time better and watch something else.
House of Gucci (2021)
It's a me! Gucci-o!
Hilarious movie! Tons of Super Mario references and every now and then great cinematography.
Wondering how no alarms were ringing when they watched the test shootings? That accent thing is something I never thought I would see in a big picture. Still baffled because we thought it was a joke.
Acting was all over the place and plot was super slow and had no point. Overacting by Leto and Gaga looked like they were goofing around.
Fun ride that lasts forever.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Zombie movie done right
Can't remember when I have seen zombie movie this good?
Hollywood should watch this and take notes. It has everything a good movie needs. Well written characters, good idea that is well executed, grwat acting, story arc, character development arc, great drama, nice action.
I higly recommend this!
Spiderhead (2022)
Entertaining movie with couple of bad choices
Goods:
Great premise
Teller is excellent
Cinematograph looks good
Music is superb
Bads:
Hemsworth doesn't fit in the role. Also his acting isn't great in this. It looks like he's in a wrong movie.
Ending falls kinda flat. Not that rewarding.
This was a missed opportunity. This movie could have been so much more.
This did entertain me for the 100 minutes it lasted. But it isn't anything special.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Going down
First season and some what second season are good, but this third is waste of time.
Moss making faces to the camera 75% of time. Plot isn't going any where. Writing is off. And it seems that actor/producer Elisabeth Moss wants to win best actress trophy or something. It is closer up after close up of her.
