An excellent film about capitalism
30 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Depp reaches an excellent metaphor of the economic system in which we live. The main issue: the exchange of a human life for money; the exchange of happiness for plastic items; the exchange of a beloved one for some material security; the opportunism of those who see in the human needs, an opportunity of profit, are poetically powerful and striking on this film. Beyond the ethnic level of the film, which might be a bit overrepresented and idealized, this is a great film. No wonder that some people in the USA are still not prepared for such a challenging artistic an philosophical confrontation with the reality of their own culture.

The life of the German colony in Guatemala
30 May 2006
A very good film about the living conditions and relationships of the German colony in Guatemala. The wealthy German families are just a metaphor to all the racial and social hate that, ever since, reigns over this land. Also a very sensitive and smart approach to the causes of civil war and genocide that provoked the diaspora of Guatemalans -over a half million people left the country as a consequence of war- in the U.S. and other countries. This film also shows very clearly how the Indians in Guatemala are abused since their childhood; and how the "ladinos" or "mestizos" try to adopt the values of the white people, trying to get for themselves, at least illusionary a "cleanest" blood. A prove that Nazism was just a manifestation of a deeper issue on the social behavior of the humans in every culture.

Move to tears
7 April 2006
Watching conventional movies can make you, with use of several techniques of visual and sound manipulation, tear down and cry. This film is not one of those. The director brings you the facts of reality and lets you choose between the main narrative story of this potential "fictional product" and the actual circumstantial situation of the characters that play in this film. It is hard to choose if you're watching a fictional drama or a documentary reality. Near the end you can just accept that you've been a too much long time watching products of the Industry while you have forgotten, or evaded yourself, of seeing all this drama, that is actually happening near you.
