Life (I) (2017)

Not as bad as people make it out to be.
1 June 2017
The internet is a funny place... it seems to be filled with people who have graduated with 5 Ph.Ds. and clearly seem to be smarter than everybody else (thousands of astronauts and astrophysicists on IMDb apparently). One star rating? Come on... Clearly, you haven't watched enough films to know decent from terrible.

I watched this film without having heard of it (no trailers, spoilers or anything). I'm a sci-fi fan and thought this was a good watch.

I found the characters to lack depth and their actions were questionable at times but the plot was believable and the acting decent. Special effects were good and made the movie believable in my opinion. The movie was well shot and I thought the scenes with the creature were pretty cool.

I don't get how people even compare this movie to "Aliens"; it's nothing alike. Overall, I thought it was pretty good.

Quite possibly the worst movie I have watched this year
15 March 2017
I was planning on writing a long review but I don't feel like spending the time on top of those two hours of my life that I lost at the theater.

Right to the point then: I found that the plot was linear, unoriginal, predictable and boring. The acting was terrible from most of the actors involved. The editing was beyond awful: if you suffer from epilepsy, it's probably safer to stay away from it.

I really can't think of anything good to say about this film. My partner dragged me to the theater to watch it, I would have never gone myself otherwise as I did not enjoy any of the previous movies either. I did not watch the trailer before the actual film and was not expecting anything when I walked in. I have played all games from the series so I'm not a hater of the genre. The movie was just bad.

Anyway, there is an audience for everything; I suspect that if you are a hardcore fan of the series you might like it.

Don't listen to the haters
13 September 2014
A lot of reviews on IMDb point out the fact that this movie "borrows" heavily from many other older movies and lacks in originality. I agree to a certain extent but am amazed to see so many negative reviews. Nowadays, maybe 80% of the movies released are pure eye-candy and rely solely on visual effects, having for only purpose to make as much money as possible. I'm 31 and have seen plenty of films by now; in fact, I've seen so many of them that I have three rules before watching anything:

1) Don't watch any film previews (never go in with any expectations). 2)Don't listen to all the haters and be your own judge. 3) Try to watch a movie for what it is and not what other movie it's like.

This movie was not perfect and the slow pace will not appeal to everyone for sure. I liked the fact that everything was not spoon fed even if the movie did not revolutionize the genre. I found the plot interesting and the scenes were rather well pieced together. I will keep an eye on the director as I am curious to see what he will do next.

About the movie, the main male lead is a promising actor who I'm sure we'll hear more of in the future but the girlfriend as well as the third wheel could have benefited from further character development as I didn't feel particularly attached to either of them by the end. Laurence Fishburn's acting is solid throughout the whole movie and I feel like he's an underrated actor in general.

All in all, it's not the movie of the year but you shouldn't listen to all the haters as it is DEFINITELY not a "bad" movie. Most of my favorite movies are not the most popular ones; make up your own idea about it rather than listen to others.

All or nothing...
13 September 2014
I feel that this movie is not going to appeal to everyone for sure. Some people call it a masterpiece while others simply hated it. I had not read the book nor had I seen any previews before watching it; as a matter of fact, I hadn't even heard of it before my viewing.

Truth be told, this movie left me rather uninspired and felt like I had to go out on a limb to find meaning when there was perhaps none to be found. The shooting is well done and S.J's acting is good but I felt like this movie had too many unanswered questions and offered no guidance. The main plot is really not that hard to understand and the "interesting" part of the movie is to see how S.J's character behaves as the movie progresses. The thing is, character development is not one of the strong points of this movie and you have to "interpret" too many things to really enjoy it as a whole.

I saw this movie not long after watching "The Signal" (2014) as some IMDb users recommended it in the comments section. I guess you either love "Under the skin" or you don't. I like movies that leave room for interpretation like "Donnie Darko", "The sunset limited", "Moon" or "The man from earth" did but there needs to be enough substance and plot development for the viewer to stay interested until the end.

I really don't mind when a movie is slow paced but this was one of the most excruciating viewings I've had in a long while. I would (and will) not recommend it to any of my friends.
