Avenue 5 (2020)
Interesting premise, underwhelming execution
It embarks on an ambitious cosmic comedy voyage but lands in lukewarm territory. Josh Gad and Zach Woods provide glimmers of hilarity, but Hugh Laurie's performance leaves much to be desired. Laurie's attempt at comedic timing often feels forced, lacking the charm and wit he displayed in other roles. I couldn't help but wonder how Walton Goggins might have breathed life into the role with his natural charisma and comedic flair. The ensemble cast offers mixed contributions, but the absence of standout performances hampers the show's comedic potential. The satire occasionally hits the mark, but the overreliance on crude humor detracts from its impact. While visually impressive, the production cannot save the show from pacing issues and underdeveloped characters. The show offers fleeting moments of laughter but ultimately struggles to soar as a memorable cosmic comedy.
Severance (2022)
Does better on paperback than on screen
The underlying concept is interesting and the allegory is important. The good guy being the obedient, caring and respectful worker while the tycoon becomes the anarchist when the deck is suddenly stacked against you. It -does- become a little tedious at times which is why I'd rather read the story than seeing it on the big screen.
Red Notice (2021)
Achtung
Feels like a cheap flick in more than one way. Gal Gadot isn't selling it at all and neither does Dwayne Johnson really excel here to be fair.
A weak story, below average visuals and a witty Ryan Reynolds isn't cutting it.
Do better than an impressive cast Netflix.
Foundation: The Mathematician's Ghost (2021)
Going downhill
Inane and tedious. Everything shouldn't be covered if it means it doesn't translate on the screen and the first 30 minutes was so inherently boring and insignificant I almost quit watching.
Foundation (2021)
The uncertainty is yet prevalent
For someone less conversant with the works of Isaac Asimov previously I can only review this based on the series alone and not the adaptaion. The plot is intriguing enough as it is and the visuals are very well done. How this will develop beyond the second episode remains to be seen. Machiavelli would be proud however.
On a side note Apple, don't underestimate your viewers ability to engange in an abstract scientific setting while force feeding us with some unjustifiable and stiff legged sexual interactions and dialogue. Know your audience and respect their intellect.
