Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (2024)
The ugly truth scarred my childhood
As a 90's Nickelodeon child, I had to watch this. By the early 2000's I outgrew the channel as I felt the programs seemed more juvenile as time went on. I found myself romantizing the nostalgia that was 90's Nick.
Low and behold Teennick eventually added an old nostalgic block of 90's shows. Fast forward to a few years later, as an adult I found myself watching an episode of one of the many reruns in syndication and holy moly was I so disgusted. How could this have gone over my head?! I stumbled across forums of people saying things about the shows then. It was kind of like an open secret. This documentary hit differently, and the ugly truth opened my eyes. I am so sorry that children I grew up watching on TV were hurt by people they were supposed to trust. There is a place for degenerate fools who use children to exploit sick innuendos. Nickelodeon absolutely needs to be investigated, and shame on the Disney channel for hiring that monster.
Taking on Taylor Swift (2023)
Clickbait and meaningless
Who honestly approved this? Oh right.... CNN.
No wonder your network has become hot garbage. I used to enjoy CNN documentaries til now. The Max platform should be ashamed to stream this junk. This dude is plain salty. Playas gon play? I mean get real. Anyone could have said that. Doesn't mean they are after you. When things don't go your way, what do we do? Play the victim. Whine whine whine. Taylor's song did not sound like yours. She didn't steal your line. You might as well come after me, I've used that like as well. Get over yourself. Sounds like you are the hater. There is a reason why Taylor Swift has been an icon in these decades. I only recognize 2 of your songs. LOL. COPE HARDER.
One Tree Hill (2003)
We were robbed of a better ending
I'm an emo at heart who fell in love and embraced my inner emo through this show. It wasn't just for preps and jocks. This show had a different premise from other soaps that focused more on the brotherly sibling rivalry. I was impressed. If you love exploring different music genres, this show is for you and will add to your library. I'm sorry I never watched this show when it aired. Skip season 2 all together. That plotline is awful. Some characters you hate in the beginning will probably be the ones you love in the end. After hearing about some issues that were brought to public attention, I look at the plot lines with sadness, and with some disgust. All drama aside, I am really sorry certain characters had to be killed off, and this was out of complete spite. We were really robbed of a great series and an even better ending. I am sorry that some people experienced terrible things. I hope one day this group can rebound and perhaps do a reboot with the children of Tree Hill.
Emily in Paris (2020)
This makes us look so bad
Ugh. The American in Paris trope has been overplayed and it isn't helping us out at all. I am old enough to remember "Passport to Paris" (facepalm). For some reason these films make it seem like every young naive American girl goes abroad to Paris and expects to fall in love and that they will automatically fit in with the population, while being ignorant of the hosts culture. That is not always true. Not all Americans are self centered and fail to make attempts to assimilate into other cultures. I was cringing the entire time. People all over the world must have horrible expectations of us. I'd never go to another country and enforce my beliefs on people, it would be inconsiderate of me. Not all French people are self centered either. This show had potential, but instead turned into some pseudo terrible cliche that I would find on Hallmark. Ugh.
María Félix: La Doña (2022)
More should know about Maria
Maria Felix's story has blown me away. I wanted to know about her because my maternal side is Mexican, and I grew up with a Grandmother who always loved the Mexican Golden Age of Cinema. Tubi has helped me reconnect with the Mexican Golden Age of Cinema, but I noticed this was available on VIX. Maria Felix deserved better, but it felt like she had too many setbacks in her life and the woman could not get a break. I was intrigued by her life and wealthy, but humble beginnings in Sonora and Jalisco, but I was very sympathetic to her story and neverending traumas dealt with. It is a shame she did not break into American (USA) cinema, perhaps she probably would have become an even bigger legend.
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023)
Coming of age film that fell flat
Appreciate the cultural and religious aspects of this film, but let's face it.......it seems you can't make a film about anything without low brow or tasteless inappropriate toilet humor. What bothered me, is the best friend playing victim when she knowingly sabotaged her friendship and then played victim when a video of her gets exposed, without the main character even meaning to send it out. Creepy jokes and scenes about teens being curious about certain bodily functions and in compromised positions......it was almost like it was written for the creeps lurking in Hollywood and those who walk amongst us. I turned it off. Cringe. At least the 1980s coming of age films were far superior. I usually enjoy Adam Sandler films, but this really could have had more potential.
A Small Light (2023)
Perfect casting, but storyline isn't accurate
The casting of this series is perfect, everyone looked exactly how I pictured them, but whoever wrote this also had so many things wrong. Actually, there's a lot of made up plots for dramatic purposes. I'm tired of the revisionist history to make certain parallels to topics today. Unecessary and out of place toilet humor in the first episode was so cringe for the time period. There are some tasteful, but out of place sex scenes which added nothing to the story. The plotline of having to marry her "gay" foster brother seemed forced and there is no evidence supporting that fact.....actually it even seems weird in itself. The best friend in this series did not exist in real life. Jan was not previously married. Miep was a strong, heroic woman who helped people she so deeply cared about, but this film writes her character to be some neurotic, intoxicated feminist who is too strongminded for her husband Jan. In the 1940's I don't think traditional women or housewives acted that way, especially in WWII Occupied Europe. The Miep character written for this series was written as extremely boisterious and and I feel they tried giving her too much of Anne's personality. While heroic, I don't think Miep would have acted out loud and publicly drawn that much attention to herself so much that it would have jeopardized them sooner. Don't get me wrong, it is an interesting series, but it seemed like the writers were trying to check too many boxes for dramatic storylines.
Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001)
Well written and portrayed biopic
Lorna Luft knew her mother more than we all think we did. From her humble beginnings in the upper midwest as Frances Gumm, she was sent with her family to the harsh factory known as Tinsel Town and molded into Judy Garland. Experiencing drug abuse, sexual abuse, and the harsh reality of playing make believe, she felt alone in her fight to be seen as a person she sought refuge and love to mask her unhappiness after the death of the father she so dearly loved. We loved her talent, but we didn't know how bad she was hurting. Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis portray her remarkably. While Judy had talent, the Hollywood who gave her a job had no problems placing her on sleeping pills and uppers, an addiction she was fighting against for most of her life. They were so quick to dispose of her when she wasn't making money for them anymore. I gave 9 stars because I still think Tammy should have played Judy during the Meet Me in St. Louis years and during the marriage to Vincente Minnelli.
Liz & Dick (2012)
Trash bio from Lifetime
Lindsay Lohan had potential when she was a child actress. I was a fan of hers back in the day.
Unfortunately, her own personal problems and facial reconstruction have interfered with her ability to be taken seriously as an actress. I think her portrayal of Liz Taylor is nauseating and miserable to watch. Who on Earth greenlit this abysmal project at Lifetime? Her raspy voice was too distingushable to even be in the same category as Liz. Liz and Richard are probably rolling in their graves. This is what happens when everyone allows hearsay rumors to be seen as fact in a biopic. What an insult to their legacies to do them dirty.
Hollywood (2020)
Has potential, but forced wokeness ruins it
I am someone who has grown up on old Hollywood and am aware of traumas people faced then in reality but also behind scenes. However, I think they exploited the characters who were actual names in Hollywood with fictional information. It's great they had people inspired or based off others, but if you want someone playing an actual person who existed, at least portray factual information and leave the fictional elements to the fictional characters. This is how you get misleading info. I am a Latina, and aware of how actresses like Rita Hayworth were asked to conceal their "ethnicity" and change looks, while the male Latin Lover stereotype flourished. It happened to others too. Today Hollywood is more about being inclusive, but in a way you can tell it is forced because of people complaining. Yes, there were many closeted lgbtqs in Old Hollywood, but we cannot just assume things about people who actually existed.
While Anna May Wong in real life never won an Oscar, this film falsely portrays her as winning one. I wouldn't be suprised it they added it in to rile people up about the recent controversy regarding nominations. Rock Hudson was closeted, but do we really believe he was having an interracial lgbtq relationship in the 1940's? And publicly coming out about it at the Oscars? What kind of nonsense is this? Nobody knew about Rock Hudson's private life publicly until he was dying of AIDS in the 1980's. A move like the one portrayed in the series would have killed his career. I find it more of a believable storyline regarding the Half Filipino director and the African American actress wife. Revisionist history doesn't necessarily work. Hollywood of the Old may have churned out better films and quality acting, but it shows the lengths people would go to secure a film. Casting couches were real. Mob favors were routinely done for studio heads. Hollywood operated dirty then, and they still do now. Neopotism existed then, and still does now. Casting was wonderful, wardrobe fantastic, but leave revisionist history out of it when it can potentionally harm or wrongly exploit a legacy.
Blonde (2022)
Who greenlit this travesty?
Norma Jean was by means no saint, but she is treated and portrayed like an absolute floozy in this. Yes the casting couch existed, but for the love of all things holy, did the writers of this travesty need to make this a trauma noir porn? How insulting. Hollywood never respected her then, and they don't respect her now, but they sure love profitting of her and want the newbie starlets to always emulate her hair, mannerisms, the way she dressed.....but always seem to do it to mock her legacy (*cough* Kim K. *cough*). Marilyn was friends with Robinson Jr. And Chaplin Jr. But there was no evidence they were in some creepily portrayed throuple. Their estates should sue if anyone is around. Ana de Armas did a decent portrayal of Marilyn, but could have masked her accent better. So much hearsay and slander in this film with deceased people who cannot defend themselves. The sperm scene and rape scenes were absolutely unnecessary. If you want a decent documentary check out The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe on Netflix. Seems like the gutter trash of Hollywood pond scum always need an excuse to get people naked or beat up on screen. So appalling. Could have portrayed her with dignity. Could have been a decent film without the disgusting trauma porn. You can do sex in a tasteful way, this ain't it. Save yourselves from watching and don't even bother.
